I know this is bad.....but how bad? Opinions please

Featured Replies

30ish mph kerb impact, wheel is clearly knackered and appears to have gained a lot of positive camber, wishbone looks straight but realisticly isn't, what I think is the subframe(?) is bent down and maybe the console... Most worrying is the split seam where strut top meets inner wing, maybe just impact shock and nothings bent?

I've got a feeling this might be goodbye 12 years NCB but if not I'm guessing the way to go would be to strip, inspect and replace obviously damaged parts. Offer up new subframe and pray everything lines up?

wow

It depends on the age/value of the car obviously but splitting the inner wing is pretty serious.

The only cars I've seen with that sort of damage and a few years old have been written off but I haven't worked in the motor trade for years now, maybe they'd just pull it straight on a jig and weld it back up these days.

Do you lose your full NCB? Quite often you'll get one claim with no impact, or a reduction on the first claim (like lose 3 years) but it seems to vary a lot - check your policy.

if you claim the insurance company are really going to struggle to fix that!

they will put oem parts back on (which means an oem alloy)

goodness knows how there going to fit that over the brembo brakes

this is assuming all mods are declared?

if not they wont pay out anyway

i did the same thing on ice and from my experience you probably bent the hub carrier to have the wheel sitting at that angle.

mine was the same after i replaced the wishbone etc and things that were obviously bent but it turned out the hub carrier also needed replaced, i think it was around £80 from skoda but not sure.

edit: after looking more closely at the pics, maybe you wont be so lucky that looks quite serious actually.

Dont go through insurance - You may have to pay an excess and must declare a claim for the next 5 years they will raise your premium, you will loose out in the long run as you will be paying back every year for the next 5 years because a claim means your a risk and that your likely to claim again. Insurance companys even raise the premium if its a no fault accident simply because a claim means high risk to them.

Get a quote of a few garages/body repairs if its within in reason get it fixed, hire a car or get a run around until your car is ready if you realy need a car. Avoid claiming especially if you live in a high risk postcode.

You could most likely pick up the parts from a salvage yard at a fraction of a cost.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm i done this not as bad mind u i had alot of camber i changed all sorts i found that the things i had bent where the damper , steering arm, the actual hub its self where the damper fits in to lol and the strut top eventually erm fell to bits :giggle: cost me around 200 quid thats with a second hand hub ass from a breakers yard, as per the crack in the innner arch id just weld it up and replace the following list and get it tracked and see how it is but thats what id do i cant really comment as i dont know the full extent of the cracks

If the alloys are declared they will have to repair like for like. They can't put a standard one on...

Edit - having looked at the photos again I can't believe that's not an insurance claim unless you're very competent at repairs...

insurance- well mine anyway do NOT cover modified items....

yes your car is insured with them on - at a premium

but they will replace modified for standard in result of a claim

Not so in my experience...

very true,

i crashed a heavily modified car, and the insurance repaired it, i was really happy till i picked it up and they had put it back to standard ! o well :'(

Its been a cost option to be covered "like for like" with the companies i`v been with before.

Thanks for all the opinions guys please keep them coming.

Practically everything on the car has been modified, so have things put back to standard is not an option. Insurance policy is with Red Star at Adrian Flux with everything declared, anyone got any experience?

Some observations -

The spot welds on the strut top/inner wing joint appear to be fully intact, it's opened out maybe 2mm and has split the seam sealer.

Most of the impact appears to have been focused on the front wishbone mount, the front part of which is visibly bent down which I think is the subframe. I can't see if the back part of the front mount is part of the console, but it apears to be an alloy block bolted to the underside of the chassis leg. But I'm guessing the most likely cause of the strut top damage would be from the strut itself. I know it's all guesswork atm but just trying to form a plan of attack.

Arrrggh and just noticed a lot of brake pedal travel.

Can anyone tell me if the consoles, wishbones and assembly carrier (subframe) are the same for all Fabia models?

Cheers

Another thing to bear in mind is the cost of your excess before making a claim. If your excess is £500 or something quite high, then you may as well just fix the car. Like I say, depends on how much excess you have to pay - also I cannot see the pics to see how bad it is, and I have no mechanical knowledge even if I could :p

Excess is £250 so not too bad, but looking at the DIY route atm, forget my last Q I've found the part numbers now.

My policy is with equity red star through flux too and unless they offer 2 policies I'm

Afraid your mods will be replaced with standard parts. That's all I know based on my own policy.

What a con, I should have stayed with Brentacre and paid a slightly higher premium.

Think very hard before you make an insurance claim, I thought Insurance was where everyone put something in the pot, so that anyone unfortuante enough to have an accident could get his repaired on Insurance at no cost

Err it is NOT. Insurance is get the repair done, right away then we will loan you the money at 200% for five years, whilst you pay us back

Due to what I originally thought after a hit and run I paid my £100 excess they paid the other £250, I lost my no claims, my premiums have increased considrably I have to declare it to any insurance company I may go with for five years, (only two more to go) Also I did not realise that although your licence with the DVLA is now clean no 30sp points after three years, you still have to declare for five years

Nasty lot Insurers

I'm with Brentacre currently but have been with Adrian Flux previously where I had an agreed value policy and all mods covered like for like with the cost of installing the mod/labour included.

It just depends what policy you took out with them, most insurance companies have a range of options.

The other problem is of course it after ALL your motor insurance policies - bikes included. Hence three hits with me...

What was the final outcome? What had to be replaced?
