Broadband advice anyone?

Featured Replies

Having got graphics card problem sorted here (thanks Skodaw) and plenty of advice on Sat Nav choices, could anyone advise me about best broadband deals? Not NTL as it didn't reach my street.

At the moment I have a wanadoo/bt free evenings and weekends on normal phone line. Finding it more and more painful downloading photos and video clips and just about impossible to download anything else.

All advice welcome as usual

thanks

@plumsoul: The ADSL Guide website proved invaluable to me when I was researching who to go with. Loads of info on there and some very helpful people. Spent a few weeks trawling before taking the plunge

I use Plus Net too, and so does my work. They offer just as good a product as anyone else, but with fantastic customer service and support for the odd occasion when something goes wrong.

Yes but you would have over 5 months of unlimited broad band from Tesco for the amount of money you have to pay up front before you can even get going with a limited download capacity with Plus Net. Rip and Off comes to mind.

But Tesco don't rely on this as their main source of revenue, as Plus Net do - therefore their margins are considerably lower, and I suspect most of Tesco's operation is outsourced so they don't have the setup overheads to cover.

So when all the good employees of PlusNet are out of work and claiming dole money, your taxes will go up to cover this, and it will be much more expensive than the difference between paying for broadband with Tesco or with PlusNet.

Cheapest is not always best value, particularly where large aggressive supermarkets are concerned.

Tesco may not rely on their internet service as their only source of income, but I bet you considering Tesco record that they make a profit from it. They may outsource the setting up etc, but they will still have to pay whoever they out source it to (I am sure it is actually BT who have to set up all these ADSL connections, regardless of the ISP). So No excuse for companies who charge more.

Of course they'll make a profit from it - the consumer is still charged more than the service costs (oh, isn't that a rip off?). Being a smaller company, PlusNet have to look at long-term development and costs - they can't rely on the sales of baked beans to buoy their business if the broadband market dries up or they suddenly need to invest in new technologies.

And, by this same token, does this mean that an independent greengrocer, who does not sell a million carrots a day for a penny's profit each, has no excuse for selling his produce for more than Tesco charge?
