why does my passenger side demist in seconds but not the drivers side?

Featured Replies

ok, daft question perhaps but now we're getting to the cooler time of year i wondered if anyone has any idea why the passenger side of my windscreen clears in seconds(ish) whereas the drivers side stubbornly refuses to without furious futile wiping? I have an 02 1.9tdi elegance...air con appears ok...any suggestions appreciated

You could have water ingres into the car. Check the carpets are dry, as that will lead to excess condensation forming. Water ingress is a common known issue with the Fabia.

Even at this time of year my car has yet to form any condensation inside the car at all, and it now lives outside full time.

...air con appears ok...

I take it you mean from that you've checked that there's output from the vents directly below the windscreen on the drivers side? Just asking cos it's not 100% clear, and would be the obvious one for me to check. Otherwise, dunno what would cause uneven misting (unless, of course, it's to do with someone being there breathing)...

My guess would be the "furious futile wiping" has left some sort of residue on the screen that is retaining the moisture and peventing it from demisting. I'd check the vents but also give the screen a really good clean with glass cleaner.

Not being funny Gav but are you a big bloke?

It could just be a combination of your body heat whilst sittng there

( Especially if you are a fair sized old lump,)

and your breathing.

Is it still the same with a passenger in the car?

Crack the window an inch and it'll probably clear quicker

It could possibly be your pollen filter is damp but to be honest I'd expect that to

affect all your vents.

Most cars normally clear quicker on that side, as it’s were you sit outside the UK. Other than that hold your breath.

As has been said before, its probably down to your furious wiping :)

Get some clean cloths (kitchen towel is ideal), a decent window cleaner and clean your window thoroughly then make sure to dry it off.

Now never touch your window ever again (well not until the next time you clean it). Not with your hands, the grimey cloth that is kept in the drivers door or anything. Grease and grime will get on the window and will make demisting it take an age. You'll be shocked at how much better and quicker it will clear if you keep your mits off the window :)

Where do you park your car? Could one side be getting more sun in the morning? Or be nearer a building or other source of heat?

hey thanks everyone for your replies (even the "fair old lump" one....i do breathe but not in a "lump" sort of way)

i normally don't touch the screen as i clean it once i notice any muck.but had no choice in this case..did use washing up liquid to clean it a few weeks ago though,.never been a prob before..maybe i didn't clean the washing up liquid off enough?..tried those screenie things once but they made things worse....(only wiped it after admitting defeat and realising i really could see very little after driving a mile - yes, really stupid but thought it would clear better once driving)

and the vents were blowing ok on both sides..

hmmm..still puzzled....right, one, get a proper glass cleaner and cleanse thoroughly, 2, keep a kitchen towel in car in case it every happens again even after cleaning, as trying to use you fleece sleeve is not the best method, 3, investigate blocked vents, dampness and maybe get aircon checked out, 4, hold breath for as long as poss after getting in car, 5, when i can't hold breath any longer breathe out of the window....

if you ever see a fabia 02 reg weaving all over the road with a manic looking "lump" furiously wiping the drivers side whilst leaning over to see out of the passenger side and alternately grabbing a quick inhale/exhale out of a rear window.... that will be me!!!

cheers again

I'd go for water ingress on this one mate. Mine condensates so easily now my seals have gone again. Hopefully getting it fixed before the winter sets in and it starts freezing on the inside. I had to live with this last winter - it's a nightmare!

Check the bottom of your door cards after a heavy down pour, and the seals which run along the sill. Any signs of water and you need to do the door carrier seal repair.

I find with more people in the car the condensation gets worse, but I think it's the initial dampness which is the problem.

HTH.
