MOT failure - quick reply needed, thanks.

Featured Replies

Hi,

i'm just after a bit of quick advice,

my car has just failed its mot due to the offside front coil spring being snapped. (i've known its been snapped for a while and it has passed at least 2 mots and it hasn't been picked up.)

they are quoting me £130 to repair it, but they are suggesting i replace the nearside at the same time at the cost of another £130.

So what i need to know is - is it really nessecary to get both done? my car is not sporty and i'm not too fussed about the handling. so its basically a price issue i have with it.

Many thanks for the help,

Shaun.

With the age of your car it is likely that if one spring has snapped the other could go at any time.

Any technician or garage will recommend changing springs in a pair for this reason and it is cheaper to do 2 at once than 1 at a time

Springs are normally replaced in pairs, but it's not essential.

ok, thanks for the replys, i'm now waiting for a couple of call backs about quotes.

cheers all.

£130 sounds a bit steep to me. Spring is about £60 & shouldn't take more than hour to replace.

Sounds expensive to me as well.

I would expect it to be about £200 for both sides.

An hour if it's a job you've done many times before and everything comes undone easily.

Otherwise more like 2-4 hours.

just booked the one side in for £106, which seems a bit more reasonable, the guy said the other side could go but springs are better than they used to be so its not always as case of doing them in pairs anymore.

I'm planning on changing the car fairly soon so fingers crossed it will be ok. As i said before this one has been broken for about 3 years and this is the first time its been a problem. I could probably take it somewhere else and it gets passed, but i think its about time i got it sorted.

thanks for all the speedy replies.

Shaun.

I personally wouldn't just replace one side. I know you say you are not too fussed about the handling, but what about in an emergency situation when you have to brake hard and the car unexpectedly pulls to one side because one spring is softer than the other?
