Winter bias tyres

Featured Replies

It's starting to get colder and i do a lot of miles each week - currently run a new VRS diesel estate and my current Dunlop's are about ready for a change on the front.

Was wondering if there are any recommendations for winter bias tyres (not full on snow tyres).

Also where can i pick up a second set of standard VRS wheels?

just ordered my nokian wr g2 winter tyres with steel wheels from my tyres for my mondy. they should arrive next week. I had some goodyear ultra grips 7+ on my octy last year, superb on a snow. Only shame they dont 2 them the size i need for mondy so thats why i went with nokians.

If you want to run them all year, then vredestein quatrac 3 seem to be well reported on here.

What are we talking about for a set of winter tyres on steels - I am running 18s, so presumably I need to go like for like on size?

We used to run a V5 Bora & fitted winters to the front only (but I've since heard some here frown on that option!)

Anyway, I'd consider it, if the cost is reasonable

I have 235/40/18 alloys. but there is no point to spend money on that size winter tyres. narrower tyre is better on snow so my winter tyres is 215/55/16.

As Ive said before..Ive dropped 2" and bought some 16" Audi A6 alloys and fitted Kumho KW 27 M&S Tyres from Camskill

I will be tucking my 18"s up for winter and saving on the wear too

I bought a set of 18 off ebay. Someone who buys them off dealers when people upgrade. They were boxed and cost £110 each or so. Tyres Vredestein wintrac extreme in 18 were 133 plus fitting. I know we could have good steel and 16 but wanted to keep speed rating. Pricey but keep same wheel look and no chance of insurance refusing to pay by running lower rated tyre. You pays your money and makes your choice.

Personally I recommend the Nokian WRG2 for the UK climate as it's one of the more dry bias winter tyre's. That said, there's plenty to choose from: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/2010-Auto-Bild-Winter-Tyre-Test.htm

my local skoda dealer is offering a service whereby they will supply and fit 4 x winter ttyres and store your summer ones until the Spring, all for £399.

good deal I reckon. Not sure whatthe tyres are but I am about to change back to my Nokians as the Bridgestone Potenzas are naff all use in the cold

that's a great deal if they put a decent winter tyre on, if you end up with something like the Nankang SV1 Winter plus it's not such a great deal ;)

I always found the Potenza RE040's highly amusing in the cold, no grip everywhere! :D

that's why my Nokian WGR2s are going back on. The only thing that stopped me back in Jan/ Feb was when I turned into my street and the snow was up at radiator level, that stopped me with a thud :dull:

I ended up using my girlfriends KA with some cheap all season tyres on it. I'm not sure the driver of a stuck range rover sport was too impressed when I offered to try and tow him.

It's amazing what the right tyres can do. Have you seen this video? Not scientific, but damn amusing http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/Video-Do-you-need-winter-tyres-if-you-drive-a-4x4.htm

The KW27s seem popular... that's what I've bought. It's worth noting Kumho are VAG OEMs now. I'll post how the tyres are when they are on. Recomended by my local tyre place, but then they're dealers ;) Still, at £85 each for 225/45 17V the price was good, and I found some favourable reviews on Merc forums.

I've had Kumhos before, just not their Winters. I'll whack them on towards the end of next month.

My Kuhmo 205 55 16 were £46 each!!!

Don't forget they (CWTs) are not just for snow (where thinner ones do have the advantage). I'm getting some Cooper Weathermasters from my old boss who imports them by the container. Going for 225/45 VR 17 but they also do 245/45 for 8J 18" wheels if they'll fit at that width. Not a problem on my Scout I don't think, but much tighter on a vRS. I'm getting Goodyear Wrangler AT-Rs fitted to my 18" Zeniths shortly (wouldn't fit a vRS though), so will see how they hold up til I really need to change over.

I am looking to do the same, the Kumho KW27 look to be the cheapest way to go for a cold weather tyre

Blackcircles and Tyresite seem the cheapest delivered for 205/55/16V

Managed to get some standard like for like alloys for the Elegance off eBay this week

Although the Nokian WRG2 are well respected they are pretty pricey as are most of the CWT's at the moment, but it seems to be the norm as the cold sets in, the prices go up and availability low.

Anyone recommend a good source for price and availability for these tyres?

ChrisRs is your tyre source available to us all at that price?

BUT...Theyre out of stock of the Kumho's at the moment in 205 55 16's

I placed an order with Blackcircles.com £104.40 delivered for 2 KW27 Kumho's, they emailed me to apologise that they dont have them.

Not very pleased with them for taking my order and payment and the realising they cant fulfil the order.

I am really struggling to get hold of winters at present, most people are saying in the next 2 weeks, but no promises.

Nokian WRG2's are expensive hence my Kumho bias

Anyone any knowledge of the Hankook ones? Prices seem reasonable and they make rally tyres (sponsors of the Scottish Championship) so may be well designed/developed.

The Hankook W440 did really well in the ADAC winter tyre test last year,

http://www.adac.de/infotestrat/tests/reifen/winterreifen/2009_Winterreifen_Test_205_55_R16.aspx?ComponentId=29880&SourcePageId=31821)

shame that ADAC didn't test any Hankooks in the 2010 tyre test.

I have fitted the new Hankook W310 I*cept Evo tyres as they are a very recent design, released earlier this year, link http://www.hankooktire-eu.com/index.php?id=193&tx_ttnews%5Btt_news%5D=654&tx_ttnews%5BbackPid%5D=132&cHash=152b171d520eecabf480c7c7043fa58d my logic being that the newer the design of tyre will hopefully be better.

Just buy some snow socks. We live 800 feet up (English Welsh border) and these were a boon last winter. Slip on and they tighten with first movement but tougher to get off but great.
