Octavia 2.0 PD Known Problems

Featured Replies

Am looking for a used Octavia diesel saloon or estate and am unsure whether to buy a 1.9 pd engined model which are extremely reliable or go for a 2.0 pd 6 speed gearbox car , I know there has been a problem with oil pump failures on some of the 2.0 diesel VAG units and wondered if the Octavia suffered from the same problem or is it only confined to VW. Audi , Seat cars

Oil pump failure isnt unheard of. Probably best posting in the Octavia section though.............

Skoda don't make a 2.0litre PD engined Octavia. The 2.0 litre is actually a Common Rail diesel engine. I'm pretty sure it's not the oil pump that fails, it's the fuel pump. But I may be corrected on that last point by someone that has some more up to date info, as I've been out of the tech loop for a little while now. However, the 1.9PD is an absolute gem of an engine. You can't go wrong with it.

Oh yes they do... All of the pre face-lift Octavia diesels are PD, be they 1.9 or 2.0 and the latter comes in both 16v (mostly) and 8v (Scout and 4x4) variations. CR was only brought in on the newer FL Octavia 2.0 diesels and the cout and 4x4 are only just changing over to CR from PD.

I've got a 59 plate 2.0 PD engined Octavia sitting on my drive.

The oil pump failure issue is not a straightforward question. A lot of early 2.0PD engines had oil pump failures caused by the chain drive disintegrating. This was modified by VAG, but failures then occured because the hex drive of the pump rounded off and the pump then no longer pumped. But as far as I can make out it only seem to affect some series of PD engines. Early Superbs Mk1 for example seem to suffer from this particularly and this subject has been discussed several times on their forum. It does not seem to be as prevalent on 2.0PD Octavias for some reason (I'll get shot down now!). Some suspect VAG have done some further mods but nobody seems to know for certain.

The Octavia PD140 uses the BKD 16V version of the 2.0PD engine, which as far as I am aware did not suffer from the oil pump issue. I did just short of 100K miles in my Octavia PD140, the only thing that broke was a cheap sensor which the dealer gave me for free because it would have cost more to process the payment.

I've also never heard of any cases of the oil pump drive failing on a BKD engined 2.0 PD Octavia. This problem only appears to affect the longitudinal variants of the 2.0 PD engine which were used in the Superb, Passat and A4 etc

The only known problems of the 2.0 PD BKD seem to be cylinder head cracks/porosity on the very early versions, and some apparently random turbo failures.

thats correct, once the chain on these units give way now it is no longer available from VAG. you have to buy a balancer shaft and oil pump which converts the unit to be gear driven rather than chain driven, taxi drivers stay away from the units for that reason. your looking at nearly 1K in parts alone for the conversion

I have a 10 plate facelift octavia with the BKD 2.0TDI PD engine fitted, had it about six months, only got 21k on but all is great.

Does anyone know if the BRD engines in the A4 are prone to any of these problems? Running sweet just now, but considering moving it on anyway...

Think you might mean hatch or estate there :)

To answer the original question, I would have no issues going for the 2.0 PD140 over the 1.9 PD105. In fact, that's what I did

Cheers,

Steve

the BRD already has the modified pump etc. its the BLB's that suffer the most

Now don't mention the turbos :S

I have 345,000kms on my BKD 2.0tdi, engine and DSG gearbox still as sweet as a nut, but I am on my 3rd turbo

:S Whats the problem with the turbos ? is it no low down boost until 2 thousand revs ? cheers - Stuart

How do you know if you have a BKD engine? Is there any easy way to identify them?

usually printed on a barcode sticker on VAG engines IME. have a look around the cambelt cover.

Just look at the engine number on the V5. It should start "BKD.........." (or similar)
