Featured Replies

Just been taking the missus too work, It's a 50 mile round trip, car's been running fine, all the way there, get 5 minutes from home and it starts too run really rough, and sounding really bad like a tractor,

Going to try and get a video of how it sounds later on.

Gutted too say the least.

Your the second person too suggest that, someone else suggested turbo, but surely this would smoke? there's no smoke under acceleration or on tick over.

Would this stop it boosting also? As there seem's too be no boost at all.

When you normally rev it you can hear the boost being let off, but now you cant,

Unplug the coil pack's one by one & let the engine idle. Unplugging a good coil pack will make the engine idle worse. If unplugging one of them doesn't make any difference to idle then you have pinpointed the faulty coil pack.

Hope that makes sense?

yeah makes sense that pal, just picking up the missus mums 09 plate vectra too scoot about in until it's fixed, as soon as I am home I'll have a go at that,.

Thanks for the help :)

I would go for a coilpack too (and I drive a diesel!!). I think the advise is not to drive it much with a knackered one, as it puts unburnt fuel into the exhaust which the cat does not like too much (and could end up costing you loads more -- unless you want an excuse to decat it!) :giggle:

Ive got some spares if you want to try one.

Actually, Id recommend changing the lot, as you never know when one will catch you out. Had the same issue with mine a few years back.

Agreed, but if money is tight buy 2 & keep the spare in the car.

It happened about 2 miles from home, so just got it home and have parked it in the garden, My dad seems to think its something more serious, but he likes to shed doom and gloom among us all in our house. Sounds like its coming from the right hand side of the engine.

Can you describe the symptoms further? If it's misfiring then it's very likely going to be a dead coilpack.

  • Author

I'm going to get a short video of it asap.

Oh dear, that doesn't sound good. :S

No idea what's causing that. Hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on it.

What does it sounds like through the rev's, is it misfiring?

Cam chain tensioner thingy me bob, like a hydralic lifter type affair

THey can a bit problematic on these, tend to happen more on the passat londitudinal mounted ones iirc

Here's what it's sounding like :(

Pull out each coilpack 1 by 1 with the engine running. If it goes worse after pulling 1....you know that coil is OK. If it stays the same, you know that one is duff.

I'm going to be going back to the car about 6ish, been having to run all over the place today so not had that much time too look at it properly. defo sounds like its coming from inside the rocker cover like.

First thing Id do is try the above, theyre right in front of you. May need access via allen key/socket to the right hand one on the engine.

How many miles has it done?

that ain't no coil pack I'm afraid, sounds mechanical to me
