possibly a sticking hydrolic tappet, whats the milage? any warning lights? it sounds to proment to be behind the cambelt cover.

kinda sounds like oil starvation to the top end, mine did that after our coombe session earlier in the year, whats the oil level like? what oil is in it? when was it last changed?

Edited by furry

Nah not the cam belt, down the other end inside the block is a cam chain and a tensioner.

Might be that but like you say could be oil issues

Have you checked the oil level?

Blocked oil pick up strainer, causing oil starvation maybe?

Agreed. I've had a coil pack die & sure didn't sound like that.

+1

Sounds top end and delicate - tappet/valves

When checking oil level, examine colour and consistency - i.e. is it dark and sticky ?

Got AA membership ? ...

Hmm i don't think that sound is coilpack. perhaps cambelt tensioner or something in the head like hydraulic follower??.

Also could be oil starvation to the head.

blocked oil pick up causing oil stavation to head in turn will cause big problems

not good as this has the tendancy to feck the engine and the turbo in one foul swoop

the pickup on these imo should be a service item for this very reason a £12 part could have potentially blown the engine and turbo

good luck keep us posted

fingerscrossed its something small for the op sake

p.s glad i didnt buy this now

HI

I take it the oil warning light goes out????

If you have driven it for some miles making that noise and the bottom end has not gone bang you must have some oil presure.

Maybe crap oil and not regular servicing before you had the mota run on the cheep.

If you do ya own stuff drain off the oil and get the sump off and take a look at the pickup in the sump, I would recommend not driving it in that condition give your self a sporting chance to keep the damage to a minimum.

I'm glad nobody bought it, wouldn't want to be thought that I knew about it and sold it like this purposely.

It was drove approx 2 miles at the most and kept the revs as low as possible, had the rocker cover off and looks too have been no oil, put oil around the chain etc, put it back together and started it very quickly just too check, and quite and smooth as, turned it back off. Oil is black, and like treacle, so getting oil pick up pipe, and all service parts tomorrow and go from there, see how it is after that. the oil light hasnt come on, but I noticed that the oil light didn't come on when ignition on, so was going to take the instrument panel out too check the bulb was still there, this will be getting done sunday with the rest. Hopefully its ok. I've got use of another car so it's safely parked in the garden awaiting some TLC. Suppose it's what I get for believing the guy I bought it off saying it was serviced regular with him being a mechanic. looks like it hasn't been done for sometime.

I'd just like to say thanks to everyone replying with suggestions as I don't have any knowledge whatsoever of these engines.

Very odd indeed. Do you know what oil it has been using? What mileage is it on?

I'm kicking myself for not asking questions like that when I got it now, will teach ne to be like a dog with 2 dicks when getting a new car, too excited to think about anything other than getting it home. It's on 106k but there's a couple of hundred that should be added too that due to speedo being broke at the minute, but that's getting fixed with the rest of it so car should be mint afterwards as long as there is no last damage from this.

Lesson learn not to take anything a seller says serious and service regardless like I would normally do.

the problem you have is if it did run dry chances are you have fecked the turbo at least

good that it went quiet when oil poored ontop of tappets

once you have drained the sump and removed it to change the oil pick up you put back together and fill with oil do one thing

disconnect the injectors and turn the car over for about 15 seconds this will ensure the engine now has oil and pressure

and fingerscrossed its all works out ok buddy

OMG, I didn't realise that you had only just bought the car!

Maybe you should stick some quality engine flush in when you do the pick up & oil change. Forte stuff is really good.

Yeah had it a month. Thought I was going to have to get rid of it as doing alot of miles through work now, but they took our company cars off us, but I now have use of my g/f's mum's 09 plate Vectra CDTI so this can be kept as a weekend toy. Got engine flush on my list of things to buy in the morning, and got my mate who does all the work on my cars coming to mine to do the work rather than moving it, as how it's parked it would need to be drove too get it out. Really hope it's ok :( just hope I was really lucky, how much are new turbos?? Well good second hand ones

£250 second hand £550 new

In my experience buying cars off mechanic is not always a good thing, as they work on everyone elses car but not their own.

If you have driven it very lightly chances are your turbo will be ok. You need to flush the crap out of the system, probably drive around with cheaper oil to use as a flushing fluid as well so you can rechange the oil for better stuff as soon as you have replaced the parts.

& Id go for a fully synth oil.

That was going too be my next question, what Oil would be best too use for flushing, and then whats best too run it on. I'll be changing the oil and filter every 6k from now on like I've done with all my other cars, worth it for peace of mind knowing its fresh stuff in it all the time.

I use Mobil1 0w40. Recommended is Castrol Edge 5w30.

Hope you havent killed the turbo, or you and your wallet will be crying. I have just had to change the turbo and breathers on my vRS. That was a bill I didn't like. I got a standard turbo, came from turbonetics, their normal price is £690+vat got mine for £580+vat as I had been quoted £577+vat from GSF. Total bill was wrong side of a grand. If you need to change the turn and are doing it yourself allow plenty of time takes over 6 hours to change and is an akward job due to location.

Skoda quoted me over £900 for the turbo on it's own.

I hope it hasnt, as at price's like that, I don't think I will be fixing it in all honesty. Only time will tell tho.

if it is fecked we can do a deal :-)

The VRS vultures are flying around now... :giggle:
