Slipping Clutch

Well 2 months and 3k miles after mapping my car, the clutch has started slipping :'(

Booting it at 2-3k revs in 3rd and 4th = more revs, but nothing else for a second until it bites, revs drop a bit, then picks back up.

Strangely it doesn't do it in 2nd.

Any idea how long it will last until I have to shell out £££s?

I don't know if my clutch is slipping or it's turbo lag, at 1k I put my foot down or just over nothing until around 1.8k rpm - this is my 1st turbo car had it two weeks now hope it's turbo lag coz once it's going it pulls rite up to the red line

Mine did very similar but with a few racing starts its not slipped in 3 months. In answer to you question though, if you use the revs the clutch will last many more miles...

but then why pay for a map if you cant use the extra

It's just ticked over to 86k, and I've had it about 6 months.

I don't think it's had a hard life, as the guy I bought it from drove it before we swapped over, and he wasn't driving it particularly hard. That may have just been because I was there though, but the rest of the condition of the car wouldn't suggest anything untoward.

I'll try a few brisk starts tomorrow and see if that makes any difference.

But seriously - that''s bad news if it is slipping. Unfortunately the chap who had it before you could have driven it like a granny and killed the clutch slipping it at junctions or even on the the stock map, booting it from 1500rpm in 5th or 6th will severely lessen the life of the clutch. On the upside, get a Sachs replacement and Ben can turn up the torque past 300lb/ft for you.

is it ALWAYS bad to boot in 5th or 6th? i dont mean from like 1500 or 2000 revs but what bout if you flying along the motorway in triple figures and your in 5th is it bad to have the foot planted even if your quite high up the revs then change to sixth and then foot down again? is that bad?

Well... I was booting it in 6th the other day, but that was at 3.5k rpm.. :giggle:

I will have to phone my garage mate tomorrow and see what he would charge to fit a new one. Luckily he owes me a favour anyway.

I take it a new DMF is probably a good idea at this point too?

a new OEM clutch is cheap compared to the sach or similar options, unless you are hearing DMF rattle i would leave well alone. A very experienced Skoda master tech told me a worn DMF of a fabia is very rare indeed at such mileage.

My fabia is running 300lbs at 201 bhp on a standard clutch with no problems at all.

Hmm.. Where would be the best place to get one from?

GSF is £130 delivered for a clutch kit.

sounds good, don't forget release bearing etc.....

Ah would that not be included in the clutch kit?

I had no slip whatsoever, my DMF had started to fail so It was all change :(

I paid £350 for clutch, dmf and concentric slave cylinder.

That was with Freedom Discount at GSF.

The replacement clutch and dmf were made by Sachs also but

were OE spec. Not upgraded in any way.

The slave cylinder was made by LUK.

I paid £250 fitting at my indy.

Much better since the change.

I never realised that you got a discount at gsf! Proves I should venture into some of the other forums on this site :giggle:

Well my dmf is not ratling at all, so hopefully it won't need doing.

I'll give it some beans tomorrow like Matt suggested - if it's still doing it, I'll drop into the garage we've been using for years and see what he reckons.

Hopefully it won't be one of those long teeth sucking moments when I ask about his prices!

did you change the clutch as a precaution then??

86K is well in the 'normal' worn clutch bracket, i hope the racing start method work for you!!!!!

if not it sounds like a cheapish replacement anyhow

Yup, I knew it would need doing one day as I plan on keeping the car for a while.

I dred to think how much I've spent on the car over the past few months already :'(

Nope, bad = booting it around or just after maximum torque = around 2.5K rpm. At that point the injectors and turbo have the headroom to react almost instantly and provide the intoxicating thump in the back we all love. Oh, and if you've a remap, can cause the clutch to slip.

Mine did it in 5th/6th when slowcoaches moved aside in the outside lane of the M-way. Booting it felt good, until the clutch started complaining. So now I'm more progressive... Still on the same clutch...

Had my clutch done last Monday at mr clutch Sheffield. Paid £590 for new clutch, dmf, slave cylinder, bearing and all fluid replacements ect. Better to replace the dmf rather than chance it and have to rip it all out again

I've heard 4 figure quotes for the work before now. :o

yeah they were by far and away the cheapest and offer a 2year/20k guarantee on it too so long as you ave it checked at 500/1500 and a couple of other regular intervals (no need to book either just turn up let them drive it then go home). job done

Some people really need to learn how to drive

Torque kills clutches and flywheels so stay away from the torque especially when mapped on a standard set up!

drive it like a petrol use the revs not the torque

or unless you have a super duper helix and smf combo like me then you can do what the fluff you want

Well I've been out for a "brisk" run this morning, and it's solid as a rock.

Tried pretty much all combos of gears and revs, and the car just pulls away with no sign of slippage whatsoever.

I'll keep an eye on it, but hopefully it will last a good while to come.

just be sensible, feed the power in then give full whelly 2750rpm onwards

Yeah thats the thing. Even going from about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle at about 2500rpm last night was making it slip.
