Tyres losing pressure

Featured Replies

Dear all

I have the elegance model 55 plate and the tyre size is 225 45 17.

I have installed brand new nokian wr2 winter tyres and I have found that all 4 tyres lose pressure.

I put in 38 lb of air and after 1week (500 miles) one of the front tyre was 32 lb and the rest were about 35 lb (same tesco machine used to get pressure)

Surely this cannot be correct, just installed the tyres about 3 weeks ago. Visually inspected the tyres and no nails etc

Please advise what I should do

Could be leaking around the tyre beading, especially if they and the wheel werent cleaned before the tyres were fitted.

All tyres were cleaned at the rim before fitting

I'd take them back and see what the garage says...they might find the cause if they remove the offending tyrs and submerge them in water...could be a tyre defect, and in that case they would replace free of charge

Immersion in a tank of water is the best bet, as it could be either the tyres, valves or wheels at fault.

Not to hijack, but on a related note.

I'm changing two of the tyres on my Superb later this week. It's still in the garage at the moment so I can't quite remember what sort of tyres are on it, although I phoned a tyre place this week and they thought 205s for 16" wheels on a Superb?

What size are yours? Are these two small?

I use 16", 205/55/R16, fits perfectly.

I'm having the same problem as Chipmonster on my 55-plate Edition 100. Mine drop to 20psi fairly quickly.

Took them in to a tyre place locally to get them to check for punctures. They reckoned something along the lines of the lacquer peeling and a bit of alloy corrosion around the edges of the wheel is allowing air to seep out. Wasn't at all sure whether he was talking total nonsense or not but he claims it's a fairly common problem.

Not entirely sure how to rectify it..... to me, the wheels are in fairly good nick!

It's in for a service with Skoda tomorrow so I'll see what they say.

I think this an occupational hazard with the five spoke alloys.

They corrode around the rim and let air out.

The tyre guy that does mine makes sure they're thoroughly cleaned and applies some black gunk which he says will help it to seal. Also pothole damage can knock the wheel out of true (especially if your tyre pressures are low) and this will contribute to air loss.

Just check them every week.

They do look nice though!

I have the same problem sometimes its fine other days it will be flat.

I think its due to the corrsion on the wheels. maybe ne s8 wheels for me then ;)

My wheels are pretty badly kerbed. When I got my last set of tyres fitted I noticed they had used 2 kinds of seal on the edge of the rims, i presume to get an airtight fit. They have been fine since fitting. There was usual white reside around the rims and some sort of red sealent ive never seen before.

Many, Many years ago i bought a second hand Dolomite Sprint, (dogs whotsis back then). Got up the following morning & i had 4 flats. pumped 'em up (foot pump !!) enough to get to my local garage (free air in those days). then off to local tyre place that diagnosed corrosion & fitted inner tubes.

Dunno if thats legal now; be cheaper than new alloys / tyres tho'

You can still get inner tubes, or at least my dad did on one of his classic car projects few months ago. Still doesnt mean its legal I guess :p

I have RS6 225/45 x 17s and took the car in for a slow puncture today - turned out to be 2 small cracks on the inner rim - probably the result of hitting a pothole. Well worth checking for.

Wheel is away being repaired / refurbished - should be back in business tomorrow.

I have a spare set of RS4 19" if anyone is looking ..............

Tubes in Tubeless Tyres

Inner-tubes of the correct size can be used with tubeless tyres if they are correctly fitted.

Remember that by fitting tubes in tubeless tyres, in the event of a puncture, the assembly will behave exactly like a tubed tyre – it is likely to lose pressure more rapidly than a tubeless tyre assembly. Where tubes for certain low profile tubeless tyres are not available, an alternative size tube should NOT be fitted.
