Faulty wiring headlight

Featured Replies

I would appreciate some help here. I have had a faulty headlight (RHS) on my Octy for a while now. The headlight will go off intermittently and it's impossible to predict when it will happen. Initially I thought wet weather/leaking might be the problem but it happens in any conditions.

On inspection the wiring plug at the back has gone dark brown under one wire connection and that wire is hot. I wonder if this needs replacing for starters, if anyone knows a good supplier it would be much appreciated (Bristol area). I have heard that some Skoda do suffer from electrical problems, do I need to consider looking for the root of the problem - perhaps earthing etc before I begin replacing parts?

The dark brown colouration of one of the wires may be caused by a poor joint / suffering from high resistance, so it is getting hot. I would start by checking that all the contacts are nice and clean.

I am not sure how the wires are attached inside of the connector blocks - I am guessing they are just crimped in - not sure if you can get the plugs apart though - never had to try. At the worse case you could get a "new" plug from from a car at a scrap yard and join it into the loom.

Could be an earthing problem on the lamp, or even a faulty bulb. After checking the connections, if they look ok then try another bulb.

swap the bulbs side to side see if problem stays put or chases the bulb

Thanks for the advice, I'll have a go at removing the lamp holder and cleaning the contacts, I have a feeling they are soldered in though.

Hi there, I did change the bulb thinking it might solve it but alas no. The colouration looks like the holder has got seriously hot or burnt at some time, I'll certainly look into a replacement part.
