Brake Discs

Featured Replies

Hello everyone.

My front discs are shockingly bad, even though I have relatively good pads. The discs are pitted and have a heavy lip too, and the pads do not cover the whole area, probably because of the heavy disc wear. The other day I tried to keep up with a mate's C 350 cdi and got it up to 110 before requiring a sharp brake and almost went into his boot - scary. I am interested in whether standard vented discs with OEM pads are good enough on the Superb (mine needs 312 mm ones - V6). What is your experience? In comparison to my Primera Sport, which sticks my face to the windscreen, the Superb is quite poorly, no feedback and no real braking power. I have been tempted by slightly uprated brakes for the front axle, nothing chavvy like grooved and drilled, just something like Brembo Max (good reviews of these on slow wear rates, no corrosion, and no thermal warping), at about £100 for a pair of discs doesn't seem too bad and stick on either some EBC greenstuff pads (I heard they are very low on brake dust - a good thing) which are supposedly good for day to day normal use or just some Brembo standard pads which should be good enough for my sort of day to day driving.

Any thoughts? I read pretty bad reviews on some of the discs sold by Eurocarparts like Eicher, and GSF is not really cheap, at about £50 for each disc and similar for pads. And my previous experience with GSF Brembo discs was that they suffered from judder within 3-4000 miles. For this reason I think they are buying stuff which is on the tolerance limit of flatness / runout, as this never happened when I bought discs from main dealer (at double the price! LOL). This is in the days when I owned a mile-eater Peugeot 605.

The standard ones will rip your face off. They are very very good in my opinion.

Excellent news. Thanks for the feedback.

Any more opinions?

Ive replaced all my discs and pads with a mix of makes. Ive got Eicher discs on the back with Pagid pads and PAGID discs with ATE pads on the front. One of my wheels has squeked slightly for 10K miles but this setup really works well once broken in. Done some heavy braking from .....70...... ;) and they have ben great. Could probably get better performance by not using eicher discs on the back but im happy enough

Oh I see.. from 70 ;-) Thanks for the feedback!

I find it a real struggle to keep my 2.5 below 70 without cruise control LOL.

Yes, 2000 rpm in 6th the thing just says, go faster plz. :)

As far as I'm aware, my discs are fine. That is they look fine, with no noticeable scoring etc. and the brakes work fine.

My question is, when do you need to replace them? How thick should a disc be as a minimum? How large can the lip around the edge be allowed to get?

OK that was three questions, but all asking the same thing - for some guidance about brake discs to someone who knows nothing about brakes.

The rear pads will need changing before too long, so an appropriate time to look at new discs as well if needed, I'm thinking.

cheers

OE brake disks have the minimum thickness marked on them near the hub. For instance, the 25mm thick disks on the front of the Superb are marked "Min thickness 23 mm". Mine are in excellent condition but are now very near the limit - new pads and disks next time. Use a micrometer or vernier caliper to check.

The Pagid disks from ECP appear to be painted with silver heat resistant paint which resists edge rusting.

rotodiesel.

Standard disks and TAROX FAST ROAD pads on mine brakes were always good in my opinion but since i put those on brakes are awesome

Hi Mate

How about going for Pagid pads / Discs - They are OE quality (The Eichers are a cheaper replacement quality) and are great value for money.
