EXCessive Tyre Wear

Featured Replies

My Octavia VRS is 7 months old.. Has 6500 miles on the clock and the front tyres (the stock Dunlops) probably need replacing.

I say probably because the wear is in a 1 inch strip down the middle and I don't know if that means time to replace or if there is a proportion of the tyre that has to be worn before you have to replace them. It's basically down to the wear indicator in the middle inch, but the rest of the tyre including the edges still have 3-4mm to go.

I would normally say this would happen if tyres were majorly overinflated but I've tested on 3 different types of tyre pressure gauges and they all read 2.0bar.

Most of my miles have been my 17 mile commute which is all start stop so I haven't been burning up anywhere, I have driven it enthusiastically at times but nothing that would cause this sort of wear, and generally throwing a car around would mean excessive wear on the edges not in the middle.

Anyone else experienced this?

excessive wear in the middle is usually caused by over inflated tyres. Might be worth checking them

also to add mine has 7400 miles on it and two track days and tyres are fine.

That was my thought but as I say 3 tyre gauges and all read 2.0bar which is where it should be I believe.

i replaced the Dunlops on mine at 8500 and they were just above the wear indicator. Was not impressed with them at all. The replacement vredsteins have done nearly 14000 miles now and still have about 4mm tread left... Driving style hasn't changed so in my opinion, the Dunlops were cr*p, end of story

should have also said have you double checked using two different readings from different airpumps? Just incase one is out? Other idea is the tracking out?

Mine are worn right down in 7000 miles

They are dreadful tyres!!!

I'll be replacing the fronts in the spring when I take my winter alloys and tyres off!!

mine were more worn in the middle checked tyre presures which were fine so i just ran them till the wear indicators touched on the outsides got around 3000 miles extra

A very common fault with Dunlop tyres.

I have exactly the same wear pattern on my Dunlops. Won't be buying them as replacements.

Yes ! See post 'Droning from rear of car'

I had Continentals fitted from the factory, I have done 16000 miles and would anticipate I have 2000 miles left

6500 seems miles too low unless you enjoy flooring it off the traffic lights!!

I will be replacing my Continentals with Kuhmo's which I really rate.
