Difficulty engaging reverse

Well I reported it to the garage last night by email/fax and they rang back this morning. They're reluctant to look at it since they'll have to charge me (it's one week out of their three month used car warranty). However they suggested it's more likely to be a cable issue than a hydraulic issue. Since it's intermittent at present I've suggested I monitor it for a week or so.

Going to the office today, it was fine at the other end, and coming home it was initially fine here - but when I tried several times, it's clearly more notchy/sticky some times that other times - though it did go home each time.

If I look underneath the car am I going to be able to see anything?

If you look underneath the car all you will see is the engine undertray. Have a read of this thread - MoggyTech gives details of how to perform the cable reset (in post #3).

Thank you for that precise link to a thread I hadn't seen before (which I've now printed out for posterity).

even if I don't feel I want to actually touch anything, if the weather's good enough I might at least investigate over the weekend.

I've had the underrtray off the previous car (to recouple the turbo pipe) so that shouldn't be a problem. I've got a coupe of car ramps - presumably they'll raise the car sufficiently to get under?

Mine's done a similar thing for a while. When stood in traffic with the clutch in you feel a slight tug and it's as though you've raised the clutch slightly and it's suddenly biting. It's then hard to get out if gear but once you do Nd lift the clutch andstsrt again it's fine again. Also sometimes have a similar thing trying to select reverse.

Because I do so little rush hour stop start driving I neverbotueted doing owt about it but I mentioned it on here and consensus was that it was possibly related to the master cylinder???? Or was it slave cylinder????

There are some topics on here about it somewhere.

Cheers

Dave.

thats common when you uprate to a single mass flywheel

i noticed if i revved it to like 2k then changed it was fine, short shifting 1st to 2nd was a no go

Id make a bit moe fuss about that, yes its out of 3 month, but only by one week, surely you woul have some stance as far as trading standards or somthing goes...and it really doesnt seem very good from the garages point of view...is it a main dealer or a joe bloggs dealership?

I did mention "six months according to the Sale of Goods Act" but it was only the mechanic I was talking to - yes, this IS a Skoda dealer but one who opts out of the supposedly "standard" Skoda 12 months used car warranty.
