Difficulty engaging reverse

Featured Replies

Car = Fabia vRS SE on 26k miles

The last two days going into my drive after a five mile drive home from the office it's been tricky getting the gear-stick into reverse to turn the car round. Gear-change otherwise appear to be operating fine. Any ideas?

Every tried talking to it. I do it some times. "Come on baby" trust me it works

I've had a similar problem though it's usually happened in car parks and other drivers are beeping their stupid horns. I'm quite happy to keep them waiting until i get the thing into reverse...

Any help would be great though.

clutch release bearing?

double clutching usually does the trick?

Not sure - it's intermittent at the moment, and I don't think it's happened going to work - I'm going to have to check more methodically.

It's fine this evening with the engine off - if that makes any difference.

I've found a similar posting here - but no conclusion, and "mattyg" hasn't posted since...

Stroke and kiss the knob, be gentle not too rough - it'll do the trick

Look you lot - I have a problem with my car and I'd appreciate it if you took your jokes elsewhere !

Sorry x

If the gearbox is fine when the engine is off then it's the clutch.

I have also had this problem but have had it on a few cars, usually seems to be in areas where the clutch is in alot of use and engine temperature could be high (ie car parks)

My car doesn't like 2nd gear, crunched it a few times

Mine doesn't really do 2nd either. On top of double-declutching, try engaging 2nd, keeping clutch in AND THEN putting it in reverse.

(And less of the daft comments too, you lot! ;) )

Since I last posted I've just driven into Tesco and back - about 4 miles in total. I reversed several times in Tesco and back into the drive here. Each time it's gone into reverse though it's pretty notchy and feels it's not quite right - but at least it's gone in unlike earlier. I'll monitor it again tomorrow.

One other thing I've noticed - when stationary and in neutral, with the engine on, pushing the clutch down increases the "engine" noise - expected?

Memories of the old car are fading now but that had done 64,500 miles and despite the gearshift seeming rather "loose" I don't recall it being as notchy as the new car - which has only done 26,000 miles

Extra engine noise with clutch down is normal. Reverse problem will either be cables need reset, or worn reverse idler gear shaft.

Thanks; please advise - given the mileage is the latter at all likely?

I've realised I must try selecting reverse when cold. I usually park so as to have to reverse when setting off but am presently parking differently so as to avoid being under the tree which is shedding its leaves into the heater system...

Dunno if it's any help, but mine does something similar - won't go into reverse or 1st occasionally. Putting it into neutral, bringing the clutch up a bit to make the bits in the gearbox spin around a bit, and then trying again normally works (even if it's only a temporary solution).

Mine's done a similar thing for a while. When stood in traffic with the clutch in you feel a slight tug and it's as though you've raised the clutch slightly and it's suddenly biting. It's then hard to get out if gear but once you do Nd lift the clutch andstsrt again it's fine again. Also sometimes have a similar thing trying to select reverse.

Because I do so little rush hour stop start driving I neverbotueted doing owt about it but I mentioned it on here and consensus was that it was possibly related to the master cylinder???? Or was it slave cylinder????

There are some topics on here about it somewhere.

Cheers

Dave.

If you have trouble, try engaging a different gear like 1st or 3rd again first then try reverse again?

I had 4 sciroccos before getting a fabia 2 litre. I put molyslip in the gear oil of all of them and always found that makes gear changing smoother and easier. Mind you, the fabia 2 litre has quite an old powertrain design.
