Big mouth girll (crash bar)

Featured Replies

Hi

Has anyone who has done the big mouth conversion on their VRS bumper comment on whether or not, it's OK to cut out hte crash bar?

I'm gonna be swapping for a Widemouth next week, but I don't want the crash bar to be seen.....Can I just not fit it?

(Also, does anyone know whether or not I have to take the bumper off to change front fog lights too?)

I`m pretty sure its not recommended to totally remove the crash bar. Clue is in the name tbh lol

DO NOT get rid of the crash bar!!

no.1 it looks really STUPID! its like a massive crator!!!!

plus the crash bar is an integral part of the chassis tying both chassis legs together and preventing front end flex... without one in id image it would handle like a wet kipper!!

also if you don not have a FMIC you will look Silly too

i drilled holes in mine to increase airflow and maintain strentgh

I cut out a bit of the crashbar, but left a good bit of the downward portion, but left all of the horizontal element which I believe due to the laws of physics will soak up most of the impact in a crash. :)

Pics to show what I mean

Didn't stay green for long. :D

I have an FMIC.........I just think it's gonna like silly with it hiding behind a crash bar, and as I'm not planning on crashing.........was gonna take it out!

honestly i tried it for like 10 mins as i had to pop to the shop to get some supplies and it looked aweful!!!

get a core cutter and add some air duct holes.... easy peasy, think i used a 40mm holesaw

looks miles better :)

I just removed the very front section of mine.

i see loads of people using this seat sport intercooler...where do you get them from??

You answered your own question. ;) Its on the Cupra PD160 Ibiza.

 does anyone??

I have been known to do my fair share of 'pikey mods' in my time and believe me, removing the crash bar was never one of them!!! It's an integral part of not dieing!

I had wanted a widemouth for ages, and when it come down to it, there isnt any way around the crashbar, so you can do either of the above or, I just decided to leave the number plate section on and remove the part below....

Surely if you are after doing this for performance rather than style you would be better keeping the bumper std and then making up an air dam so that ALL of the air that comes through the vent HAS to go THROUGH the IC core - rather than 99% of the ones you see will have big gaps all around the IC so the air will hit the core and then an awful lot of it will be pushed around the IC rather than through it.

SAFETY FIRST - ''LOOKS'' SECOND - enough said imo emoticon-0148-yes.gif

See what you're saying, but the fabia isnt exactly known for its co-efficient anyways, and so long as the air can pass through and out, should be too much of an issue IMO

You will also need to maintain airflow to the rad aswell

You would not be altering that though, just making sure non of the air is 'wasted'.

Yes but the space around the cooler is the airflow for the rad as the rad is bigger

I know air flow will pass through the ic but then you also have the air con rad aswell before it gets to the rad

ha yes i did, i hadnt realised it was the actual one off the cupra..my mates got one might nip up with the tool kit :) so how much are those seat ones?

I paid £250 posted, but think they`ve gone up an bit now

Matt

where from online mate?

No you'll need to go to a Seat dealer.

would it be worth fitting to a standard bumper? ie one thats not cut out?

Well the Ibiza isnt cut out so id say yeah..lol

If you anyone is looking to cut out holes for airflow in the crash bar I'd suggest cutting smaller evenly spaced circles into the sides of the ridged sections as by cutting larger holes out of the peaks and troughs of the ridges you are weakening the triangular profiles which give the crashbar stiffness and strength.
