DAB option available?

Featured Replies

Is there a DAB radio option available on Octavia's or Fabia's ? It's available as an option on Polo's and standard on some Golf models. Analogue radio is going to be switched off in 2015.

nope

So will all the current Skoda owners have to get a new headunit or some naff attachment in 2015 ?

Also standard on the Seat FR

Virtually the whole EU have dumped DAB, we are the only country left with it. DAB takeup in the UK is falling fast, with sales of DAB radios falling. Even with the current radios taken into account its a tiny % of radios in use today.

Analogue radio will not be switched off in 2015, the government have more or less said as much due to the falling radio sales. I can see why, the DAB in use here was devised back in the 1980s and uses an antique system based on MP2 which needs high bitrates to work, sadly the mux owners have gone for quantity over quality and many stations even music ones are transmitted in glorious mono at low bitrates.

If the UK gov go ahead with this stupid idea - think of the landfill, there is allready a nasty add on (rather like a freeview box) available from halfords.

I had to fit a temporary replacement standard radio/cd earlier this year as my stream failed under warranty, took about 6 months to replace so I have all the required parts from fleebay, if you want info on this let me know.

In the next year or 3 I am sure (if this stupid thing goeas ahead as I say) I am sure you will be able to get double height or single for that matter DBA units + the the parts from fleebay.

FM won't be turned off in 2015, 2018 is the latest date that has been discussed but in all likelihood it'll be 2020 or beyond.

There was an article on DAB radio on Radio 4 this morning. The gist of it was that the government is not going to push through the 2015 time limit, and there are recommendations that the date be moved to 2020 or even 2025.

This is all "happening as we speak", so at the moment the official deadline is still 2015.

Yes.

Not only that but there have been murmuring that DAB+ will be dumped and another, more widely deployed standard, will be used instead, the longer the delay the more likely this is.

DVB-T2 Mobile, DVB-NGH and EMBMS on LTE are much better options and could be implemented in the timescale. Not many people would be sad to see the back of DAB.

My main gripe with DAB is that they have squashed too many channels in with older compression that has resulted in rubbish quality. The stated aim of better reception and more choice is a laudable one.

I wish we could just skip DAB and move directly to delivering it via the internet.

The first manufacturer to offer Skype calls from in the car, internet radio, podcast downloading and all the obvious stuff like google searching etc. will make a mint.

Got all that - and satnav too - with my new Android tablet. Just have to find a decent car mount for it now...

As long as there's network coverage to supply it all... The amount of motorway miles I cover where the phone only has GPRS and not 3G or HSPDA would currently stop this being practical...

Turn off the passenger airbag and velcro it to the dashboard :giggle:

How do you find the tablet generally? When they first came out i was totally unimpressed, but now i'm trying hard not to buy one until the 2nd generation arrive :'(

Haha that's v true. There must be better radio systems available than what's found in a mobile phone though, maybe ones that consume more power but that'd be ok in a car. I wonder if the systems used on the virgin trains are better?

If the UK gov go ahead with this stupid idea - think of the landfill,

Why?

The world is full of countries where AM/FM is still in use and far more widespread than the internet.

Really good actually. I too wasn't totally convinced how useful I would find it, especially as I already have a smartphone and a netbook, but I have been quickly won over.

Just ordered a car mount from ebay so it's on it's way to being my new sat nav as well. Rather than distracting from this thread, I will post some further info in the ICE forum when it is set up properly in the car.

Feel free to PM me if you want any more detail on the tab.
