Car Insurance

I opened my renewal quote today, to be greeted by a premium for £779 for a Skoda Octavia 1.6 and 5 years NCB! :'( Ok I do have one speeding ticket for an SP30 from 2007, but still it shouldn't have rocketed by nearly £400! I was hoping for a premium more like £300! B)

I found this article on confused which helps explain it - but still makes me mad!

Confused debate on car insurance

So has anyone got any suggestions? I have been on confused, and cheapest is £500, still well over £100 less that I paid last year. I currently have my MX5 insured spearately and was hopign to do a dual car policy, has anyone tried these as well?

Mine has gone up 100%. No points, no convictions, no nothing, just another years no claims bonus is the only difference :(

EDIT: That 100% increase is the best I can find. The RAC refused to even quote this year...

I refer the honourable gentleman to this thread http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/181421-fabia-vrs-insurance-price-hike-ripoff/

I really don't want to start ranting again on this thread, as my blood pressure has only just come back down to near normal again

Talking of insurance, but slightly off topic. Young Ree has just renewed his with his well earned 1yr NCB.

10 months premium.

No, I don't know what that's all about either tbqh.

New ploy by these parasites to make it look cheaper p'raps?

Is that with Admiral? They do a 10 month policy 'Bonus accerlerator' type thing. In short, 10 months = 1 YNCB. Pretty sure it must be more expensive in the long otherwise they wouldn't offer it.

I found 1 year extra NCB = £80 cheaper. Having my license for 2y over 1y 9m = £300 cheaper. Guessing that's where they'll get you - as an NCB isn't as much of a discount as holding your license for longer.

Admiral it is!

Over £300 cheaper than what Quinn quoted, but still an obscene £1380 on his new i10

I've just mentioned this to young Ree, and he now confirms what you've just mentioned.

He forgot to explain fully apparently. Kids!

Most 'laughable' quote was from the AA.

Are you ready for this....................................................

£22,000!!

£22,000 - bargin! Can remember once at a lunch break at school, must have been 4-5 years ago, getting a quote of £18k on a Lambo - you know times are bad when an i10 is more expensive.

I got a insured for £1,300 on a Polo GTi at 19 - surely an i10 has to be less than that?!

See (if possible) if you can insure a second car with Admiral too. I also found it worked out cheaper if I said I was a 'main' driver, rather than 'shared' or 'occasional' (I added my parents too as named drivers), which might be worth looking into. Also found lower miles (to a point) made it more expensive. Guessing it's based on familuarity with the car?

It worked out cheaper for my parents to cancel thier policy and move it to Admiral when my renewal was due and do a multicar policy, which also bought the cost of mine down. If you do go with Admiral, I think they require you declare certain extras, like non standard spec (optional) alloys etc. There's a tickbox 'is this car modified?' - if you say yes it shows the extras they care about.

Also think Elephant (Admiral sister comapny) are cheaper, but lack stuff like legal help etc.

I feel your pain with insurance though - can't stand them!:punch::swear:

I think it must have been a glitch in the price comparison site tbh Trigg'.

£22k is just absolutely unbelievable.

He's actually paid Admiral today in readiness for his new car collection on Friday. He has added his mother to the policy, and gone for a £300 excess.

I may take your advice and ask Admiral for a quote for a multi car policy

Young Ree is only 18, so consequently only has 1 years NCB.

How long ago did you get that policy for the Polo then?

:

HA HA HA!!

You are young Ree's twin bruvver that we never knew he had, and I claim my fiver!

Every December for the past 4 years, this insurance company rings me, asking am I Mr N. Ree....which is my son of course, asking would I like to have a quote for my Lambo Gallarado!

Cheeky little bugger admitted it all eventually, but meanwhile I have to apologise profusely every year.

Have asked to be taken off their files, but they still keep ringing

Sounds about right! Got an inbox full of spam relating to follow ups for all types of cars I'll never be able to insure. Always used fake phone numbers though so not had that issue happily.

Got it in March this year. I'm 19 and had a full license for 1y 9m when I got the insurance. Only had 1 yNCB at the start date of the policy though as Directline are *******. (Well, we didn't read the small print, but yeah. . . )

With the multi-car -- they say you can add other cars later, so he may not need to cancel/start again either.

That is incredibly cheap for that car at your age going by todays prices generally.

Still a massive amount of poke, but there are seemingly some slightly more reasonable companies out there after all.

Sorry Rich.

Me and Trigg seem to have hijacked your thread for some serious bantering here, however, it would seem like giving Admiral a good dose of looking at might be advisable

I would suggest that any one looking at any of the comparison sites looks at who supports them . To me , the main pusher is BISL - aka HSBC broker .

To the OP - I found confused.com et all all to be more expensive than going direct to the firms themselves. The site sponsors on here, Chriss Knott, A. Flux etc all seem to be a good bet if you're over 21. Anyone from the Admiral group seem to be cheap on the whole too - Elepant, Bell, and Admiral. Although I'm not sure what terms of legal, health, EU cover etc you get with the 1st two.

Crap, sorry - just realised it was £1,600, not £1,300! Still not too bad though considering IMO. Woulda been £1,300 if I'd waited another 3 months till I'd had 2y license. Either way, I'm happy with what I'm paying.

Still a horribly high figure,, especially as at a younger age you're earning less too. Crazy.

I contacted one of these 'specialist' companies for youngsters that restrict the hours you can drive in.

No driving between 11 and 5 I think it was, with a black box installed to monitor your movements.

£60 if you did.

The premium?

Yea, I thought it would have made a significant difference too.

Well, I suppose it did.

£2600!

I tried one of those GPS tracker based quotes, just to see what kind of difference it makes being so restricted (and monitored, der-der-dum!). It actually added more than £800 to my renewal, presumably with the added cost of the equipment, does that make the equipment yours after the insurance has run out? Can it be used as a plain tracker? hmmm :wonder:

I think these people just make figures up in their heads.

A friend has one of those trackers and it took his from around £2.5k to £1.6k I think, so something like that. Still a lot of money for a £100 Clio though!

I've managed to justify it as I drive to uni and live at home, and it's still several times less than living away (even if I include bying the car it's cheaper!).

Got our renewal and they want £568 which is the most i have ever paid for car insurance, aparatly we are paying more because of uninsured drivers and that claims are becomeing more expensive aswell. Next year it is going up again by 50%.
