Replacing Pads and Discs on VRS

Featured Replies

Morning All,

The time is quickly approaching for replacement of pads and discs all round. Discs have about a 1mm lip. The question is how easy is it to do as a DIY job. I am thinking about upgrading the fronts to the 312mm kit but might be short on cash and I don't know how confident i'd be bleeding the system.

If i just replaced them with OEM parts is it a relatively easy job?

Thanks in advance.

Can't help with how easy it is to replace them, but I had my discs and pads from here. I can't comment on the quality or anything, but I've had them on since about September and the brakes still feel strong to me.

Hope that helps.

Did mine at the weekend!

Relatively easy job, took a few hours, but be warned - you need a specialist tool to do the rears. Fortunately I was using the 4 post lift at my friends garage when doing mine, so he had the tool. You have to wind in the pistons on the rear calipers, you can't push them back in. Something like http://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-33606-Caliper-Wind-Back/dp/B0001K9SSO will do it.

And please do not forget to copper grease everything - except the pad & disc faces!

Oh and 1mm lip - you can probably get away with just replacing the pads this time.

Not a vRS (just standard 1.9), but it's easy to do, although time consuming (although I did clean everything as I was doing it, which won't help). As the others have said, you will want a calliper rewind tool (you can fashion your own out of a Y-shaped thing with prongs on the top of the Y and a g-cramp, but I wouldn't recommend it).

I think Laser, etc make something similar (but it doesn't look as nice) for about £15-£20 from Halfords/MachineMart.

If you are ok with swinging a spanner then it is straight forward. Th rear discs can be filed to remove the lip, then fit some pull off springs to keep the handbrake working ok.
