Store your Summer/Winter tyres

Featured Replies

Anybody have one of these?

I was going to store mine on top of each other on a wooden floor, in a wooden shed and cover them to protect them from the sun etc.

Isn't that an old TV aerial :giggle:

Looks just like the Aldi one that they were selling a couple of months back for a similar price.

I've always stored my Fiesta's "competition spare" wheels & tres flat in a stack on top of each other at the dark end of my garage. Never been aware of any damage caused by storing them flat like that, though I tended to wear them out in 2 seasons anyway!

However, the Yeti wheel/tyre combination is somewhat heavier and more expensive than the Fiesta's, so I must admit I dont know if there's a particular need to store them differently.

Had a look in Kwik Fit the other day. They just store customer's summer tyres on their standard steel racks, each standing vertically just like their new tyres. If they are fitted to rims, I reckon that method is likely to do far more damage to a tyre than ones left flat, even with 3 more on top.

Any expert opinions?

Istore mine flat on top of each other in a corner of the attick. Always have done and never noticed any problems. It is cool and dark there in winter, but gets a little too hot in summer at times.

Hi,

this My link is Michelins advice on tyre storage (link can also be found in the storage section of the tyre and rim guide).

Hi,

You will find this does not have the capacity to hold four winter tyres without modification, and the wider summers are even more of a no no, It's designed for smaller and narrower wheels and tyres, max size is stated on the packaging.

It was cheap so I will put it down to experience :D

It states:

"For tyres up to 225mm width" so should be suitable for any Skoda tyre.

Well I bought this item and I could only achieve a few mm clearance between wheels by cutting some lengths of about 40 mm of waste water pipe to adjust the spacer depths.

Respectfully suggest you actually measure the width of your tyres from sdewall to sidewall, mine are 235mm wide, (215/60 Goodyear Excellence on 7Jx16 ET45 alloys) 10 mm greater.

So buyer beware

I have one that looks like this, from Ebay, which holds the alloy wheels and sumer tyres from my Son's Rover 25. Those are 195/55-15 and there is more than enough space for them.

This particular stand is a bit wobbly but it works.

I also have a more substantial stand for the Yeti's summer tyres.

Hi,

Just checked the actual width of my mounted summer tyres (215/60 Goodyear Excellence on 7Jx16 ET45 alloys) these are about 235 mm wide, the stand as advertised on ebay says 225mm max width.

I shall ask the sellers though as mine would not even handle 225 width out of the box, so perhaps I ended up with the wrong version, it cost so little I couldn't be bothered at the time to follow it up, as my time

is of much greater value.

215 is the width of the tyre at the rim, not the width at the widest part of the side walls which extend beyond the rims.

Cheers

It's annoying that such stands are only available for 4 wheels. The others ones I've seen are sold by Westfalia, item numbers 175646 and 841155.

A "highways spokesman" interviewed from the side of the M8 (or it may have been the M9 or M74 - I wasn't paying attention at that point) in Scotland the other day as a Marks & Spencer artic threaded it's way between cars abandoned on both lanes of the 2 lane carriageway behind him, just happened to mention that 7 out of 10 cars abandoned on that motorway in the dreadful conditions that befell the area were "high performance German rear wheel drive cars". He couldn't be referring to Bee Ems & Mercs could he?
