Anyone got an all-in-one touchscreen PC?

Featured Replies

If so, which one, and what are your views?

Any input gratefully accepted

I have an Apple iPad and have just ordered a keyboard and dock for it, so I guess it could be considered one :) I love it and you have portability as well.

A lot of those HP ones are good too. If you like Apple stuff you could hang fire as I think they're bringing out a new iMac with touch.

Using a computer like that with touch though, there is one drawback - your arm wants to fall off after 4 minutes :)

Apple were going to bring out a i-mac version for children but they have changed there mind as it would have been called " i-touch kids"

Cheers - I've got a netbook for portability, so this will be used as a home computer

The reason I ask is that I've spotted this Packard Bell at Currys - 6 months IFC, 1TB hard drive, 4GB memory, 2.8Ghz processor, 23" screen - seemed pretty good value

I touch kids

I presume you're still signing on regularly :p

The only thing that bugs me with touchscreen PC's is the fingerprints.

I berate people if they touch my screen at work leaving fingerprints and that's not even touchscreen.

I've always thought 'how long before my arms ache from holding them at an odd angle for so long?' - which has always put me off them. That, and the last few I used didn't seem to acknowledge my existence, and just didn't respond until I used the mouse. emoticon-0114-dull.gif

I read an article where Apple (Steve Jobs?) was asked about a forthcoming touch screen iMac & they (he) said they wouldn't bother until they could overcome this 'arm-ache' problem. Another article showed an Apple patent for an iMac like PC with a tilting stand that allowed it to lie flat, close to & parallel to, the desk so that it could be used with forearm or elbows on the desk.

I agree. It's bad enough on an iPod Touch. Or do I just have really greasy fingers? :)

I'm not planning on using the touchscreen a huge amount, it's more of a gimmick than anything else, though would come in handy for some applications

I also like the idea of having less wiring trailing about, and by the time you've bought a tower with that spec, plus a separate screen, the price won't be that much different, and might even be less

One issue is that when something goes wrong hardware wise it can be a nightmare getting parts for those type of pc's

Some of these PC's seem to be using micro-ATX or Mini-ITX main boards, though it's not always easy to spot which ones. Any that are built using custom components will be as hard to get parts for as a laptop. And as expensive.

Have you had a look at Dell for all-in-ones?

What do you want it to do?

I've got a couple of POS units available if it's nothing too clever/demanding...

Thanks for the offer, but I was thinking more in terms of a space saver, rather than a space filler B)

Kids like the idea of a touch screen for the novelty, and some of the functions are quite useful too

I'm still tempted by the two Packard Bells, but thinking about it the 23" screen would be mahoosive, so it's looking more likely to be the 20" 6020 model - and being a tight wad I'll probably hang on until after Christmas to see if there are any more price reductions :|

Got a reasonable spec one on sale at Aldi this weekend!

3 year warranty too!

Used to scoff at manufacturers like Medion and Packard Hell but if they are offering 3 year warranties they must be worth consideration?

Bas bought an Asus something or other. Laptop with a touchscreen and you could swivel it around 180 degrees then fold it back so it was like a tablet PC.

Aha, it's an Asus 1825PTZ-413G25N. Around £500 but a decent spec laptop

Thanks Xav

Del do something similar, but it has a screen which flips to turn it into a tablet

TBH I'm not needing anything that portable, as I've already got a netbook which is good enough for browsing

It's the desktop which needs replacing, and there's so many to choose from - all-in-one, small form, and standard size

I've decided it's not that desperate, so I'll get Christmas out of the way and have another look then

Thanks for all the other useful comments posted

Not for me.

The problem with these sorts of machines is that they are so specialised.

If the screen breaks or the motherboard then it'll be very difficult to repair. Probably uneconomical.

A normal computer with the same faults you would simply replace the screen.

Plus you're probably paying a premium for it, plus finger prints.

also what benefit does the touch screen bring on a desktop? you'll have to lean forward in your seat to use it. More appropriate on a tablet I think.

Might as well have got a laptop lol

Personally don't see the appeal of a touchscreen computer so I bought an Apple iMac 27. I don't think the screen is too big. I mainly use it for photo editing and it's been an excellent piece of kit. Can't rate it highly enough!

I have a 24" HD resolution monitor, and think its small. You may think a 23" is large until you use it for a bit and then it becomes small. Buy something with as bigger screen as you can afford because if you buy a small one and it ends up too small, you'll have to sell the whole computer to replace it. At least with a traditional computer you can just buy a bigger screen.
