how low?

Featured Replies

hey guys iv just got a vrs and the ride height is massive!! i wanna put a set of my 17'' porsche rims on and drop it a bit but was thinkin 40mm springs as i wanna keep it comfy as i have a newborn, iv had coilovers in the past but always slammed, if i was to buy a set of jom coils but only went a lil bit ie 40 50 mm would this be comfy? or am i better going springs? any pics of 17s and 40mm springs etc? cheers azza

I don't think there is a spring kit that will drop a VRS 40/50 mm, most spring kits will only drop a VRS half that.

If you're looking for comfort from a set of coilovers you're going to have to have to spend a bit more money than JOM coilovers. Check out the alloys archive or some of the other posts about lowering for pics of 17's and drops.

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

Baby Comfort > looking good. Full stop. Leave the ride as it is. THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

If you lower more than 25/30mm you *will* have sump clearance issues and *will* have comfort issues..

eibach springs and koni FSDs FTW!

Why not get coilies and have them set high.

Then can slowly get them lower without anyone knowing :D

So has anyone used cheap coilovers and only gone a lil low? Iv used so many diffenent types of coilovers and iv only ever gone the lowest i can so im not sure on the ride quality other than that cheers

The standard ride hight is 4x4, and looks stupid IMO. Lowering it on springs will drop it by 25-30mm normally, which gives it the ride hight it SHOULD have had to start with. However, while it`ll handle better, it`ll still not look "low", esp not with 17`s on. If your ok with this kinda look then its all good, however, if you looking to give it a bit more of a "decked" stance, then it`ll need coilovers. I`v never understood the whole baby thing and coilovers, my little nephew has no issues in my fabia. Not only that, my fabia has a better ride than my standard fiesta ST by far.

im on weitec coilovers and have a2yr old boy, he's fine whilst driving steady, which if you have a child on board you should be doing of cause emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Correctly matched coilover springs and dampers will always be more comfortable then dropping 50mm on springs with standard dampers, not to mention the pogo rebound.

Get a set of coilovers and just don't wind them that far down (although the temptation will always be there...).

Never touched the sump once on the estate, eibachs and konis were ok in 2005, better about now.

Although it`s not a 100% fair comparison, my friend has the "shocks and springs" combo on her ibiza, and its not very nice at all. Bouncy. Even though my coilovers are all the way down near enough they are MUCH more comfortable than the kit on the ibiza.

thanks for your help guys i did have coilovers on my mk3 with helpersprings removed when he was born and the ride was seriously bumpy it never bothered him but i wasnt happy with him being in such a bumpy car, i think ima just go with coilovers and drop it a lil amount to start with and the 17s

am i right in thinking that the suspension is the same as the 9n polo?

cheers

It's the same platform as the 9N, but obviously the weight of the VRS engine/box means that you'd be best buying coilovers specifically for the VRS.

I was under the impression most coilovers were the same no matter what the weight. Not only that, the polo and ibiza both came with the same engine and gearbox as the fabia, so this shouldnt be a issue.

Regardless of where you can set right height spring rates and damping should still reflect axle weights. Weitec for example list different coil overs for a petrol and diesel engine.

Jabbasport, Awesome GTi and DPM all only list one kit, the latter even listing it for all engines. Either way, as long as he got the kit for the right engine, it`d be ok? I have polo coilovers on my fabia, and my new KW`s say polo, ibiza, fabia and A2 on the side.

Sadly, unless you are spending proper money the damp rate wont change and in fact the spring rate wont either if you are looking at the likes of jom/ta technix

Wonder why then when ordering my coil overs for example for the Ibiza they listed two kits, on for the petrol and one for the diesel, I emailed Weitec and gave them the axle weights for the 1.4TSi and due to the DSG they said use the diesel set as the axle weight wasnt suitable on the petrol ones.

Not arguing with yourself at all of course, and wouldnt dare argue with Matt, anyone who eats coil overs for breakfast has clearly shat out more than I could ever know about suspension.

I should have been more specific with brands but don't want to offend !
