The look

Featured Replies

Don't you just love the look people give you when you drive past them in the snow :giggle: Sorry, I just had to say that.

I agree totally! 4.5 inches of white stuff here last night. What appalling driving standards out there,

BMW, Merc? Just give it loads of welly, that's how you drive in snow isn't it? Check!

Toyota Yaris? Loads of wheelspin is sure to melt the stuff when starting off from traffic lights. Check!

Bentley backwards through a keep left sign. Check!

Long line of cars creeping along a perfectly level 4 lane roadway at 15 mph? Check!

Lexus stuffed into the back of a Transit van? Check!

All that in just 4 miles of perfectly driveable urban roads at 11.30pm yesterday.

Yeti? A steady but perfectly sereen cruise home, & I'm still on the standard fit Pirelli P Zero summer tyres!

Lovely!

Was out this morning at about 0600 checking bus routes. Took the following on A59 between Clitheore and Gisburn. Yeti was very sure-footed - highly impressed yet again.

Yesterday was fun overtaking slowly driven cars in the outside lane of a dual carriageway which was empty and virgin snow. Also overtook a car going at about 10mph for no reason other than a litle bit of snow. I got so bored driving behind it. No drama, whereas there might hVe been had I not had winter tyres on. I could tell the roads were slippery.

Off shopping soon. Steep hills to get to to the supermarket. ........

Once again, the roads were easier in the Yeti before the gritters got out!

What tyres you got on John? (the Yeti that is, not the Harley!)

Avon Ice Touring ST. I don't know whether they are any better or worse than other winter tyres but they're certainly better than summer tyres.

Son has Nankang SV-2 on his Rover 25 which we got from My Tyres for £53 each.

Love the pics Jst At Home

rockhopper,

you're so right.

bores me sensless.

yes i know the roads are covered in snow but do they have to drive sooooooo slowly.

the adverse effect is the snow just gets gently compressed into ice and then they drive even slower, if that's possible?

came across an old biddy in her honda jazz today, 15mph in the middle of a 2 lane dual carriageway and a huge queue behind.

i moved out into virgin snow and drove gently by the lot of 'em at a reasonable 25mph

grinning from ear to ear whilst my missus was checkin the "i wish i had one of those" faces of all the drivers we passed. :giggle:

oh, and that was on dunlop summer tyres too. no dramas :D

Just got back from a gentle drive to the local supermarket. I took a detour up some lovely snowy etc roads to show swimbo why we have a Yeti. She was impressed! stopped a few times and started off again. At one point when I put my foot down fairly fast the Yeti just accelerated up the hill, slightly sideways for a split second. Great fun. No drama. No hassle. Looks like there might be a window of opportunity ie ok weather, to head up to Scotland for our holiday tomorrow. I just hope I don't get stuck behind a jack knifed lorry etc. M40/M42/M5/M6/A74(M)/A9.

Should be interesting. I just hope I can average a reasonable speed, or it will take forever, as it is about 470 miles.

Ive just got in. I Drove to Bruges this morning for some Christmas shopping and a change of scenery and I encountered plenty of snow; none of which stressed the yeti at all! The onlybthing that slowed us down today was the cancelled euroshuttle tonight! My admiration for this car continues to grow very rapidly.

I hope that's your job and not just a very demanding hobby!?

Well. We made it. 473 miles, 58mph average, maxidot recorded 43.3mpg.

8hrs 14 minutes driving. I was pleasantly surprised. no new snow. Outside lanes were interesting at the best of times.

The worst bit was between Oxford & Northampton junctions on the M40. Spent ages in the outside lane overtaking everybody else, whilst driving in the snow. Only had one interesting moment when I hit some snow about 8/10 inches deep on the offside at about 40mph. Elsie was pulling hard to the right! I kept her on the straight and snow and managed to move over onto some clearer road. I was too busy today concentrating to watch other drivers as I cruised past them in my very dirty Yeti.

Winter tyres are brilliant but you need to remember you are not invincible.

I must say I am very impressed with her performance. So is swimbo. She has almost forgiven me for what I put her through whilst waiting for Elsie!

Mike

OOOOOOOOOOOOO showing people what a Yeti is capable of is just SOOOOO smug and satisfying :D

The tank is FULL of diesel, plenty of screenwash & de-icer in the screen washer bottle, snow chains and snow shovel in the boot, as is a couple of blankets.

I drove to Lincolnshire early Saturday (and missed the blizzard hitting London) and the Yeti was perfect on all sorts of roads. I'm so glad I found this forum in time to get these winter tyres! What a difference they make! What a car! NOTHING phased the car. I went down the smallest little frozen country lanes in the dead of night with no fuss. Also noticed for the first time down these lanes how easily and quickly the lights turn with the steering wheel! So subtle but the light was amazing and just where you wanted it. I also got an average of 42mpg giong up and 40,9 coming back (due to the snow hooing coming back yesterday!). Impressive for a car with just under 2000 miles on the clock. emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

And yes I fell in the snow too! Well I stepped out thinking it was just the same 7 inches as everywhere but it was much deeper than I thought... So ended face first in the snow. BUT my camera stayed safe and did not hit the snow at all! But hell was it cold!!!

But the camera was kept dry:

Hehehe... I was not alone in the car! That pic was taken from an iPhone - hence the grainy quality! emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Hi John,

Just wondering how your son is getting on with the Nankang SV-2 winter tyres. They are the only reasonably priced tyre I can source at the moment.

Just for info, we've been driving around on several inches of snow and ice this week, including our hillside home, and have found the Kleber Krisalp HP2's from mytyres absolutely brilliant, not a sign of slipping, it feels so much safer. Totally converted to Winter tyres now, was a bit of a sceptic before, especially as on the 2WD they have transformed the car in snow. Tony

LOL!

Hi John,

They're OK. He says he notices the improved grip. Important thing someone else said earlier, winter tyres are good but they don't make you invincible.

The Nankangs came from Mytyres and although I ordered standard load, they sent extra load rated tyres. Not sure if that makes any difference.

As I said, I had a set of Nankang SV-1 on my Honda FRV a few years ago and likewise, they were good.

I wouldn't have any qualms about putting them on my Yeti and the Avons I'm currently using are cast offs from my departed Passat.

Interesting point (I note another forum strand on all season v winter tyres) is that Nankang say that the SV-2 is an all season tyre, albith that its is marked with the correct symbols for extreme winter weather (http://www.nankang.com.tw/home.php?fn=eng/product_1&no=11&pno=24)

Thanks John and Tony,

I agree with the invincible bit, I'm just after a tyre which doesn't shy away at the sight of a hill or snow /slush covered motorway off ramp. I'll leave the heroics for the nissan pathfinder brigade.

I had a run in the Rover with the Nankangs last night and then in my wife's A Class along the same roads. No two ways about it, the Rover was far more assured on untreated roads than the A Class with Bridgestone Potenzas.
