Well to be honest he's not buying it,i am so i want to get him something that handles well, looks ok and that i can have a little fun in.

thats why i fancy a 306 of some description.

An X reg Fabia TDI with 300,000 on the clock. :D

Well, seriously I would stick with the brands with the longevity record, i.e VW like he already has, but unsure what sort of Veedub for that money, simply a newer Golf - maybe M reg era?

If I had that money now, I'd be looking at the petrol 306s like you mention, but also maybe look into Renaults too? Although depending on tastes, there's some big cars for that sort of money. My mate currently has an R reg 2.5 V6 Vauxhall Omega for sale with 150K on the clock -

Maybe a completely daft suggestion this...

How about spending the

If he fancies a 306.. get a xsara.. he'll get much newer \ nicer for same money, and same tech underneath.

I would go 306 Diesel,

If you really want to get more for your money how about a damaged repairable & tidying it. Its amazing how little it takes to total a car these days & provided its lightly damaged should not be a problem.

If you can find a cash friendly body shop its a great way to get a cheap motor. OK its worth less when you sell it but if its value for money you want its the best way.

Ive bought 2 cars this way & both have been exceptional bargains so its worth looking around, one was a diesel that had been through deep water & the Engine was full of water, otherwise it was completely straight. I paid 3500 for a 2.5 year old Citroen Xantia,

To anyone who's interested in a car under 1.5k, may I suggest my E30 BMW 325i touring which I'm about to sell..... Beautifully balanced RWD handling and a healthy 170bhp..... Yours for <1500 gbp...

Dont write the BMW off immedeatly on insaurance costs, might not be as bad as you expect back in my younger days it was cheaper to insure a bmw than an escort !

I have a 306 XRDT (n reg) with 60k on the clock purchased for

mate has a 306 xsi not sure on age but i think its an N and to honest i'm not exactly impressed with it, not massive milage lower than my octavia if i remember right but is noisy rattles and just doesn't feel as solid on the road. but then again its french and we know how well they are put together.

i'd be looking at golf/mondeo/bmw for that money

Visited an auction the other day, there were some interesting cars going for under

You'd get a decent Mondeo or Vectra for

ZX volcane is a cracking motor, I had the one point nine... they are built like pugs but at least you get more for your money.

Honda Civic of some description?

A 1.9 TDi Octy estate went for

if it was me i would keep the mk2

which is the real problem,

were not gonna sell it but its got to a point that it needs a new front end due to a collision with a telegraph poll, not at great speed, its still drivable but just needs new front panels.

the insurance will write it off so hence buying my brother another car and taking the MK2 to my mates workshop and getting stuck into sorting it out and getting it back on the road.

oh i see, at least the good car is getting kept :D

best bet would be the auctions like the other guys have said
