I have found this Octavia that i am going looking at tomorrow, done a lot of mileage (126k) but the cambelt/water pump has been done at 77k and its got a fully stamped service history.

what do people think of this? High mileage a worry?

thanks

The cambelt was done 50K ago, so I think I would be asking them to change it as part of the deal it will be a cheap job for them if they have a workshop just the parts. Looks ok to me though, the mileage shouldnt be a big deal but I think it seems a fair price but towards the pricier end given the mileage so would haggle, always start low in my experience and get some warranty thrown in.

How do you prove they have done the work? you just take their word for it i guess? I will haggle because i am on a tight budget plus they want to look at the golf i am p/xing....the one at K and N Motors (mentioned previously) also has a fsh and has 90k miles on the clock but the cambelt/water pump was done at 77k?

hopefully if they say they will offer me £1200 for my golf (like they said on the phone) then its a snip at £1990.

Any comments are appriciated guys

Beware of px values that they offer you over the phone, usually just another trick to get you down there and increase your interest in the car that they are trying to shift. Wouldnt be a bad deal if you can get it though! Get them to do another cam belt change tho!

Easier said than done i guess....do i ask them for proof when its done, we all know these trade garages are dodgy :wonder:

seems a nice car and only a test drive will prove that i suppose.

What ive done in the past is get them to sign the service book back page to confirm the belt was changed and how long the part is guarenteed for, how it would stand up if the belt did snap and you needed to go back to them would be another thing but atlest if you have trouble free motoring you have something down on paper when you come to sell it on

most outfits do a basic oil and filter service on car purchases, when they stamp the book, if it is anything like octy II there is a whole page they can tick so they can add the cambet in there, make sure the 'change cambelt' is added to the order form you will no doubt sign, other than that think you have to trust em other than rocking up to watch them change the belts!

I'll ask them first hand to change it as part of the deal, then again they may knock down my p/x price to fund doing it, the car is £3190 (a little steep considering there is the same model with 35k less for £2985) they say they will offer £1200 so thats £1990, i could say £2k with 6 months tax and a warranty, plus the cambelt/water pump work doing, i cant see them getting much interest with that kind of mileage....i'm good at walking away as well!

Test drove the Octavia today.....this one......http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201101376666888/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-from/3000/price-to/4000/fuel-type/diesel/model/octavia/make/skoda/radius/30/page/1/postcode/sk164pn?logcode=p

The test drive was lovely and smooth, the steering was tight and no drifting left or right, the handbrake was tight, also the gearbox was very smooth and responsive, it drove like it had done 10,000 nevermind 126,000!!!! there was a slight knocking underneath the car, maybe from the suspension i dont know but i had the full lock on both left and right and no noises at all...a slight crack on the grill at the front where you lift up the bonnet and a dot of rust on the door arch, these jobs will get done in the workshop and will be fully prepared/valeted and serviced for me on Friday when i pick it up, i loved the car it was very clean and tidy and no rattling or knocks, everything just works, plus they are giving me £1400 for my golf which was £200 better than i got on the phone yesterday!! so got a better deal and got a 6 month warranty and 6 months tax and the cambelt/waterpump is being done too so all in all i am very happy with the purchase....roll on friday!!!! happy days ;)

Looks and sounds like a great motor, glad you sorted it and got a good deal by the sound of it

Got a few Skodas at that garage

I am very happy with it mate, they are a nice friendly dealership and i felt at ease with them with their 'bring it back if there is anything wrong with it' attitude.....it drove really well i was shocked how something with a bit of mileage drove that well, everything works like it should and for £1795 i cant argue, any things i got to watch out for when i get it??

I signed a form and they stamped it, god knows what that means.....or proves, but he seemed ligit enough and he didnt seem the type to not do it if you know what i mean? The car pulled really well as well which was impressive.

I know that feeling, I had a 2.2 petrol Omega before I got the Octavia and the Octi pulls so much better with a lot more torque

Completely different pull from my Gti, the Gti was an overtaking car....but the Octavia pulled really well and was smooth through the gears, very responsive for an 110bhp car.

Glad you got sorted, I completly forgot to mention that place to you, I originally went and had a look there myself as they had a few octavia's when i was looking

I take it you were the guy looking at that car when I was in there buying the Octavia Estate?

If you are like I said then, Parkside are one of the best dealers around! Although I am slightly miffed about getting a 3 month warranty when you're getting 6 hmmmm. :o

I found Parkside back in 2007, when I was looking for a better car than my Skoda Felicia at the time. They offered me a decent trade in price and I bought an Octavia from them then. And after a month the gearbox when boom, Parkside rebuilt it and even gave me a courtesy car!

Also your car looks good too, got all the bells and whistles. And yup my 05 plate one is a gem, 91k, FSH and beautiful to drive... :smirk:

Same here, soon as I got in the octavia I knew it was what we wanted, its obviously done motorway miles because the gearbox and steering is very tight and drives superb for the cash. Also got a very good price for the golf too. Can't fault it.

Hi guys, first post so take it easy on me! Currently got a Golf Gti (non turbo) which i have had for the last 2 years but is starting to cost me (1999 S Reg) so looking at the Octavia's found a 52 plate with FSH for £2,985 its the Elegance and has done 90,000 miles. Are there any things i need to be looking for when i go to look at it?

Thanks for the advice and any help would be much appriciated

Hi are you still looking to buy a car? Have a 55 plate Superb Edition 100 1.9 tdi manual for sale.
