Looking at buying a 1.9Tdi Elegance, some pointers please?

Featured Replies

Is it every 70,000 miles for the cambelt/water pump change on the SO? What about the clutches on these as well? I'd rather knock them down and get the cambelt done myself elsewhere.

Skoda recommend 80k or every 4 years for the belt but most people would reccomend doing it at 50 or 60k and every 4 years. Worth while getting the water pump done aswell tho!

I thought that VAG UK had standardised at 4 years or 60k miles (whichever is the sooner) across all engines a few years back?

Or has this changed again?

He is now saying the car was a lease car and that 2006 2008 services are missing if it was a lease car how many people have actually drove it? Lots probably and all with different driving styles so that clutch would of taken some hammer I guess also the last owner was a doctor.... I have decided I want FSH with the car just for peace of mind.

Mine was ex-lease, and then one owner since then, plus me. I bought it at about 70k, and it needed a new clutch. Cambelts are ever 60k (ignore the service schedule as Skoda changed the distance - reduced it from either 100k or 80k, iirc).

If the car is a sluggish to drive, then the MAF could be faulty. Other than the the vanes on the turbo getting stuck and the CTS the 110 is pretty good. Mine is up to 175k now. Water ingress into the drivers door can cause issues for the electric windows/mirrors/central locking/alarm light.

Hi guys, first post so take it easy on me! Currently got a Golf Gti (non turbo) which i have had for the last 2 years but is starting to cost me (1999 S Reg) so looking at the Octavia's found a 52 plate with FSH for £2,985 its the Elegance and has done 90,000 miles. Are there any things i need to be looking for when i go to look at it?

Thanks for the advice and any help would be much appriciated

Is it a 110 TDI or a 130PD?

I take it its a 110?

My car the same as the one you are looking at has done over 192,000 and still runs fine and drives like a car with less than a quater of the miles.

One thing i i will say beside whats been mentioned about the cam belt!

Find out if its ever had a clutch in its life and if poss what the car has done! Maily motorway miles or town

As a clutch when it goes is a pain to do yourself, if you can?

And if not will be fairly costly in the garage as the parts are quite a bit as you ideally would re place the DMF with the clutch and if it was my luck id by the car and the clutch would go within the first month so its worth having that in the back of you mind!!!!

But apart from the Cam belt and the clutch they are very good cars

They suffer with anti roll bar bush failure which isnt an issue as it take about 30mins to do a pair and they are only a few quid each, but that is a common clunk on these cars.

Also the front suspension arm bushes can split especially if they are aftermarket ones, but when you drive the car if things dont clunk or wobble in anyway then things are probably fine.

The only other thing that i can think of is the Mass airflow meter, have a look at the fuel consumtion on the trip computer!

If its a lot lower than it should be for this type of car, and/or the car feels slow its proably the Mass aiurflow meter that has given up, not that much cost about £80 odd i think.

But a way to test is drive the car and if it does feel slow, stop and disconnect the meter and if it feels the same then the chances are its gone, if it doesnt feel any worse in performance then its okay.

Drivers seats suffer more than on most cars and can give a false indication of higher milage than what the car actually has, some cars can be sub 100,000 but still have rough looking drivers seats.

Apart from that hope you find a good car and it all goes well.

As these cars are quite sort after and are quite hard to find in good nik

Is it a 110 TDI or a 130PD?

Yes its the 110bhp

The garage with some service history have emailed me and said 'i have checked the car this morning its got a belt replacement sticker on the corner of the engine bay saying 70k so you should be fine'

do i take someone along to check it out or do i take his word for it?

going seeing the one with the fsh next week.

hi there given your in manchester is the one with 78K for sale in rochdale in grey metallic? Looking on autotrader at the photos it looks like the nearside rear may have had a respray as the back door and rear panel look a slightly darker paint - could be just the light/angle though.. That and the dinged front wing I would stay well clear personally.

My dad has the 1.8T elegance owned from new, different engine but its been 100 percent reliable, he did recently have to get the aircon regassed, the CD changer (in boot) repaired and the rear hatch struts replaced. Fixing the latter two cost buttons via an independant parts supplier, the skoda dealer wanted about £500 quid, forget the exact figure it was a scarey amount!

If you did go for the 1.8 petrol turbo its such a great little engine and youd get a newer lower mileage car for your money. Just a thought. My old fellas motor is full main dealer history and immaculate so they do exist.

Ok just looking at the K&N website now

May just be the picture but it looks as if there is a scuff on the lower section of the drivers door below the bump strip

blimey you have got good eyes.....its looks the best one i have found so far though, please feel free to browse....i can go up to £3,500 within a 60 mile radius

I've also got an Elegance estate and it's probably the best car I've ever had. Problems with mine are the Climatronic V71 flap motor which is use to change between fresh and recirculated air into the car. Check the sound of the heater fan in the fresh position. If it sounds like it's speed is varying then it's a good bet the flap motor is faulty. As has already been said check the history of the cambelt and water pump because you'd be well advised to change them if they haven't been done. Personally high mileage doesn't concern me. Vehicles that clock up a lot of miles very quickly do tend to have the best engines, because it's obviously not possible to accumulate a high mileage with the occasional trip to the shops. The dreaded sticky vanes tends to be avoided with high mileage. In any case it's the quality of servicing that's important, not how many miles are showing on the clock. These engines will go on and on if properly looked after, and give very little trouble.

The worst thing about mine is it has beige interior which is very difficult to keep clean. This is especially true of the seats. I have two children who like any others don't seem to be able to put their rubbish in the bin no matter how many times I tell them to. The seats get black water marks on them, and apart from wet shampooing them I've yet to find an upholstery cleaner that really works. My advice is buy one with a dark coloured interior.

Unless you buy a genuine Friday afternoon car I very much doubt you'll be disappointed with the Elegance TDi.

Thanks for that advice i will try and check everything when i go and view a few, the ones i have seen tend to be 'bamboo' interior...if the cambelt/pump has not been done then i will try and negotiate, pretty potless at the min with cars, my golf has just had front suspension arms, two new front tyres and wipers and there is a oil leak on the head gasket so its the right time to get shut me thinks!

The capital cars one with the Vrs wheels and exhaust is nice, again most of them with some service history, not too keen on the ambiente spec tbh.

I bought my 2001, 51plate Elegance TDI in august as an in between car , never driven a Skoda till then and I have been well impressed! Mine had 64k 1owner full main dealer history pretty immaculate for a 9year old car(and Iam fussy!) and I paid £2650. Road tax is only £110 for 12months and amazing on fuel, drives really well, I cant praise it enough and have no intention of using it as an in between car anymore

Whereabouts did you buy it from? Seeing as though you are from the Manchester area i just thought i would ask

Are you only looking to p/x your car with a dealer? You might get a better deal selling the golf privately.

I nearly sold my pd130 a few months back but couldnt part with it in the end.

Make sure you get proof of the cambelt/water pump change too, I bought a Fabia pd100 a few years back with a supposed cambelt change

having been carried out within the year but it failed within 6 months leaving me with a £1500 bill.

I will try and sell it privately but the clutch is slipping amongst other things!! I would have to sell it sold as seen because I don't want people coming back to me. Then again if I did sell it private I wouldn't have another car to use to search around for another car so I would be stuck.

Finding it really hard to find one with a FSH and for £3000-3500....just gotta keep looking.
