*HELP* car transporting *HELP*

Featured Replies

hi, a little request please.

I have just managed to get my mits on a Mk2 Jetta GTI with no MOT but my problem is it is is doncaster, and i am in dover.

I was wondering if you know anyone who can get my car down to me the end of Jan?

I just need it sticking on the back of a transporter, if you know anyone with one can you point me in there direction please? (drop me a PM)

It cannot go on a 2 wheel lift though as the car needs an MOT for that.

Thanks

Shark - PM'd

is it taxed ?

if so insure it and book it in for an mot near you and drive it there

theres a loophole for ya

No Tax :(

how about if you have a mate with a 4x4 or a tranist with a towbar hiring a a car trailer?

try. http://hire.indespension.com/cgi-bin/main.cgi

not sure of the cost but it is another option to explore

join the AA or RAC get you home cover then pretend to brake down at your friends in doncaster !! (sabotage electrics first)

or its gonna cost you its a 500 mile round trip

have you had any quotes yet ?

Yea got one quote of £298 from the above company that MDK1 recomended.

have been in talks with someone local who said he can do it for £250 but it would have be done of a weekend  Ideally wanted the last week in jan as i am on leave(the friday)

Borrow some Trade Plates??

  • Author

Arent the trade places licensed and insured to the dealer?

Arent the trade places licensed and insured to the dealer?

Yes they are licensed to the trader,im not sure about the insurance,i thought the trade plates only cover the tax not insurance,i personally would not drive the car that distance as you dont know its mechanical condition.you can hire trailers if you have something to tow them with.

see my conudrum is the car needs 3-4 things doing for its MOT so would need to be brought down on a bed/trailer.

Trailer - £100 per day - will need it for 2 days as wont do that trip in time for only 1 day - my license dosent cover my to trailer - so would have to find someone with a toebar and for them to do it.

Where as i can spend the little extra hire a truck with a driver, do it in one hit and not have to worry about getting things back to ppl.......

Only other way i have thought is to hire a Car transporter myself as i am legal to drive one.

Trade plates only cover RFL (tax) NOT insurance as everyone seems to think. Nor do they exempt you from an MOT test, and nor can you use the "book an MOT near where the car is going" trick.

vRSSunroof - sent you a PM back ;)

Hey these shark boys are alright you know!

PM'd you my mobile number for a date (just dont tell the missus)

let the maths speak for themselves:

£298 +vat (worst case) for someone to deliver the car for you or:

£100 x 2 days hire

£65 x 2 for a tank of diesel each way

£50 for a travelodge overnight

Incidental costs (dartford crossing x 2, food, drink etc)

you're looking at roughly the same cost, but costing you 2 days off work and the added stress of hauling a trailer up and down the country

its a no brainer, let someone else do the hard work and leave yourself to not have to worry about it

Are the MOT failures big things?

If not would it be cheaper to have them fixed up there?

the Brake master cylender gone, the steering rack, Horn innop, twisted flexi hose, wiper stalk dead.

I can do all these jobs at home and save myself nearly £200 labour costs.

And im buying the car to fix up myself anyway so its ideal there is work needing doing to it, still not 100% on fixing cars so its a good platform to learn from B)

Save £200 labour and then pay it to have the car transported?

Why not suck it up, get it MOTd and then drive it down and do the rest yourself.

Horn and flexi pipe are most likely to be quick swap jobs anyway right?

So rather than paying somebody £300 to move it and then having to fix these, you fix it, and have the car to you "road legal"

Flexi pipe 5 min fix.

Heres the question for you. what is wrong with the horn? apart from it dosent work?

Could be a number of things with old electrics - Button press on steering wheel - Fuse - Relay - Horn unit - Earth - Faulty connection somewhere - Broken cable.

I am not prepared to take all that stuff upto doncaster (couple of 100 miles drive i might add) to Bodge it quickly to just scrape it through an MOT where if i do try and MOT it it still wont pass due to the failed brake system.

I dont have the time to be living in a hotel for a week while i scrounge drive space off the guy to fix it and get it MOTd to drive it back.

I have explored every option and the easyer and cheeper option is to get it transported down here and i can do the jobs properly.

Im not in a rush to have the car road legal, it is a Project car not a daily.

I would rather not do it if i wasnt going to do it right. This car is a project to keep a rare ride on the road, not just 5 min of a joy ride in an unusual car.

I'm suggesting you pay for somebody to fix it as surely that then gives the car an MOT and is better to spend the money on that than on paying the money to transport it and still have to fix it.

Im just going to say

'Yea............... ok....................'

As you dont seem to understand :|

I get what you're saying, I was just saying why spend £300 on transport when you could pay £300 to have it fixed for you with an MOT.

Then you could do the rest up yourself and the £300 would have been spent on fixing things rather than just moving the car.

Anyway, I'll stop now.

because i posted this thread it is not now costing me £300 to transport the car. :smirk:

In that case, fair enough :)
