Thread on locking wheel nut

Featured Replies

I went to take swap my back tyres for my front ones today and found that I can't get two of the wheels off. The studs that need the locking nut are crossthreaded/malformed, hence I can't get the locking wheel nut in to rotate them.

The locking wheel nut used to take the studs off looks ok, it's just the actual studs on the wheel that are buggered.

What can be done to remove the offending nuts, and can pretty much any garage do this or would I have to take it to a dealer?

Probably got corrosion on. Had similar prob with mine. Could be a simple job by just getting any garage to use their air powered tools to remove them. Then put some copper grease on so they don't corrode on again.

I hope so. I'm more concerned that they won't be able to get the locking nut inserted and get enough grip to turn it.

It's a ribbed type locking nut and the ribbed bits inside the bolt are half-sheared off. I'm hoping it won't need to be drilled out!

Buy some stud extractors (basically a socket with teeth that bite in to the bolt when rotated) which are big enough to go over the bolt, get them from partco, halfords ect!! used them many times on many cars

I can tell you a real easy way to get them off but i wont broadcast so ill send you a PM, dont want to be blamed for wheels going walkies.

Whatever you do, don't do what this guy did.
