Finally bit the bullet

Featured Replies

I'm currently driving a Fabia vrs diesel and have been looking at the new Fabia vrs with Orr. So I've finally bit the bullet and booked a test drive

Just a bit sceptical about the dsg gear box.

Anyone got one or had insurance quotes and your around 23 like me???

Personally i thought DSG was amazing when i test drove a Mk2 VRS

Couldn't justify the expenditure/loan/credit agreement to buy one though.

I was also waiting for this place to reveal a little more about MPG figures. If it's in the 40's as the literature says then, with the way fuel prices are at the moment, it might be a considerable alternative to soot power.

I've been really tempted myself to go and have a test drive of the new vRS just to compare it to my old vRS, as people have said it's the gearbox that puts me off and the fact that it's a petrol, apart from that it looks a stunning car.

diesel's FTW

I didn't warm to the dsg box on my test drive, that said I've not lived with the car. It may work ok as an everyday gearbox, but if you like to go on trackday's like I do, then its not a great companion.

Have a read of this on the Pistonheads page, its the rather lengthy post! http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=86&t=933146&mid=109001&i=60&nmt=Oi!%20Skoda!%20Where's%20my%20Piggin'%20car?&mid=109001

i do alot of trackdays and im more than happy with the DSG. the paddles take a bit of getting used to but once you are used to them they are awesome. FWIW the guys on the GTI forum runnign most runnign in excess of 300Hp sear by DSG for everyay use and trackdays

If your not happy on them, then you can use the gear knob to manually change gear when it is in manual just like they do in race cars. knock it forwards or rear wards to change gear.

So even better than a manual, as there is still no clutch, but you still get to use the 'gear stick' and have lightning gear changes

Tried the box on an Octavia VRS and on the Fab2 VRS hated both, why they don't introduce an manual is beyond me

Maybe they have had the DSG software tweaked? To me it wouldn't hold the gear I wanted, and shifted up a gear too early for my liking, unbalancing the car - that was in the so called 'manual mode'. Also the 'S' mode was a joke, it just held the gear screaming its nuts off! Certainly drove better in 'D'. I don't like things 'trying' to guess what you want, I'd much rather stick the left foot down and select a gear I know will work myself. I do agree with you though that the shifts are damn fast, that bit is impressive at least.

Test drove it with the DSG and it changed fast. My dad has the Golf GT 160 DSG and thats okay too. I am coming from an RX8 and fancied something completely different and this fitted the bill for lots of reasons. My only concern is after manually shift for 20 years would it make me lazy.

Take the drive and enjoy.

The new vRS test drive was my 1st and only ever experience of an automatic box and I thought it was excellent. I was amazed at how smooth the whole driving experience was. As a fan of vRS diesels, I too was dubious about the new car being a petrol, however I soon changed my mind once I had the new car on the B roads. I found not only the performance, but also the handling of the new model far superior to the old vRS's to the point I told the saleman on arrival back at the showroom 'who cares about MPG anyway'.

with regard to insurance, im 22 and mine is £375 fully comp with £250 excess. On a brand new fabia vRS

East Anglia comparatively cheap for car insurance is it? That sounds like an extremely reasonable premium.

What did Orr think to it, and is he going for a test drive too?

I think the ipad should have corrected it to awe if the reference is to being amazed by it B)

i have 3 years NCB and my father is a named driver. even the sales people were surpised at how cheap it was!

after driving it the 200 odd miles home i can say i 100% LOVE the DSG. after 250 miles on the clock i have got 40 MPG doing between 60 and 70 dual carrage way all the way home (50 miles ish was urban driving) its more economical than my brothers 09 plate ibiza 1.4 SE!

my insurance is with elephant

Oh yeh that's it :)

Got mine in November and I'm currently being charged £380 with £300 excess and that's with Elephant. I'm 23 like OP. Living in a fairly rural town with an insurance risk postcode of B. No points on license etc.

Loved the DSG gearbox. Make's driving very easy and relaxing. Was fine in the snow. Can compete with most things on the road even in drive mode :)

I thought he had a pal on Hear nicknamed ORR :giggle:

did u book a test drive over the internet or just go to the dealer, dont think id be interested in having a mk2 fabia vrs unless a diesel option was avaliable. but want to have a drive and compare it to my mk 1 vrs and not drove anything with dsg before

The DSG gearbox makes the car what it is, I don't think a manual one would be as good.

did u book a test drive over the internet or just go to the dealer....

I'd be interested to know this too as I'm thinking about booking a test drive soon.

Also, how long have you got for the test drive? I would realistically like a good few days to see if I really liked it and to double check if it would fit in my garage without to much bother but I'm unsure if they do that?

Not sure I quite understand what you mean. Isn't it just the same as the 2.0TSI say, in the Octy vRS FL - having the option of DSG or manual? Why does this 1.4TSI in the Fabia2 vRS only work well because it's mated to a DSG 'box?
