Diesel

Featured Replies

I wouldn't go that far, but it's right enough.

The key reasons not to use 'virgin' supermarket diesel are the lack of injector cleaner and lubricity enhancer, which means your car will (gradually) run worse over time - but we're talking years and tens of thousands of miles, so I guess it depends to an extent on how long you plan to keep the car. Forget stuff about increased cetane numbers etc. though - ECUs these days alter the timing to make engines run pretty much the same, whatever fuel is used.

FWIW, I use either regular ('FuelSave') Shell diesel, or supermarket fuel + Millers. 'Performance' diesels such as VPower or Ultimate will tend to give worse MPG due to being made from a slightly lighter fraction and/or part-synthetic compared to the normal stuff. The reason for this, however, is supposedly to improve responsiveness by providing quicker combustion.

It must be said that FSI petrols do coke up if run on supermarket fuel (older N/A ones, at least) so there are definite benefits on some VAG petrol engines...

Just to put in my two-penneth I have used ShellV Power diesel in my current car (Alfa JTD) and did not feel any performance improvement, but there was a reduction in fuel consumption - as mentioned previously.

I now only use Shell "normal" diesel, experience has shown that on my engine Sainsbury's product necessitated the EGR valve to be cleaned at the annual service - no problem with Shell

Anyone else use Millers diesel additive? I've been using it in various diesel engined cars since I had a diesel Metro. I do believe it makes a difference feeling that amongst other things it results in smoother running.

Or have I just convinced myself?

John - I used to be on a Volvo forum and there are people on that who absolutely swear by Millers. One in particular provided a long term log of his use and was convinced it a/ improved the performance of his car and b/ improved the mpg by 3-4. That particular poster was someone who always gave very sensible and knowledgeable answers to threads so I tended to believe his claims. Most of the people had tried various products but they always returned to Millers.

I have never put additives in myself but that thread stuck with me. If you use it and you are happy with it then keep going, I did not hear anyone attack the claims that were made and there were a lot of engineers on that site (Volvo attract a lot of mechanical and engineering type boffins)

I know lots in the Land Rover world swear by Millers, especially if they have 200tdi's. I also know of people who use it because they always buy supermarket fuel, and it replaces the additives they don't use.

Personally I will stick to using diesel from the main retailers and wont worry about it.

Once you add the cost of the Millers, there isn't much of a saving using supermarket fuel with Millers added to it. The reason I do it is that I had my credit card swiped at the only 'branded' filling station near me, so don't go there anymore. The supermarket is the only other filling station on my usual travels, but if I'm out and about for work, I make sure I fill up at one of the two Shell garages I go past...

I am surprised to hear people are using millers when the handbook says not to use any additives or bio fuel.

Ask your dealer whether they used injector cleaner at your next service! ;)

At the end of the day, putting Millers etc. into supermarket fuel effectively turns it into a similar spec to branded fuel, which clearly you CAN use. Although the suggestion on the label that you could get extra power as a result is where the credibility gap opens up!

IMO, the advisories against additives or biofuels are a get-out clause in case someone tries running on nothing but virgin rapeseed oil (not heated, so quite high water content), or mixing their diesel with paint thinners or WHY (who knows what problems that would bring!)
