How far does spray paint go?

Featured Replies

After mullering 3 of my 4 alloys i've purchased a second set and am going to refurb them myself.

I'm more than prepared for the hours of cleaning, sanding, filling, sanding, cleaning, sanding, cleaning that i have in store but once all the prep work is done I have no idea how much primer paint, paint and lacquer to buy!

Now I've never spray painted anything before - yes i do realise starting on a set of wheels is possibly a bit silly but i can always sand it down and start again - so have absolutely no idea how much paint you get from one can.

I stuck "spray paint" in to eBay and found a seller selling bundles of 500ml cans of primer, paint and lacquer, and originally thought a can of each for each wheel.

However i found this thread on Detailing world which seems to think 600ml of primer, 900ml of paint and 600ml of lacquer would be enough for a full set of wheels.

The last thing I want to do spend twice the necessary money and buy 4 times as much spray as i actually need.

Anybody know how many spray cans i'm actually likely to need for a full set of 4 wheels?

A little tin of Platikote covered four sheets of A4 with two coats, if that's any help...???

I'd go with that link you found! :)

I'll bear that in mind Apogee thank you! :)

I did consider that the tin of green Hammerite i bought to do my brake calipers and the tin of silver i bought to seal the insides of my last set of corroding wheels were both barely touched once i'd finished the jobs and have remained untouched since!

I think given the 500ml size of the cans on eBay 2 cans = 1000ml of each should be enough

I just sprayed up 4 steel wheels for the winter. They had 1 or 2 bottles of primer, 3 bottles of main coat and 1.5 of laquer. On the whole they're holding up well, but have a couple of chips on the outer rims. Don't think I left them long enough to harden though, so my fault really.

These were the normal size cans they sell in Halfords.

Personally I would give them the city powder coaters in Birmingham, for £20 a wheel they will blast them inside and out, powdercoat them then lacquer them.

I had my winter wheels done there

The only downside to them is they do not fill any imperfections in the wheels, but for £20 a wheel they are well worth it IMO.

Thanks Gizmo

Looks like a good deal at £20 a corner and the finish looks excellent.

However my current rims need a load of filling and refinishing as they has a nasty incident with a very nasty kerb and even the second set is hugely corroded on the inside and needs some filling around the edge.

I know it'll mean a huge investment of time and effort but I don't really have anythign better to do and I'd quite like the warm satisfied feeling inside knowing that i'd done it myself!

I'm hoping I can get the whole set done for about £40

the link seems fairly spot on

When I done mine in a hurry I used about the same and they lasted for 2 years and covered 30k before they started to crack and chip badly. Again like in the above post I think that was down to rushing them to get them finished in time!

Getting them done for you is actually cheaper, but doing them yourself is worth it when you step back and think, yeah I did that B)

Nice DW thread that. Duly bookmarked in case I ever need it :)

Can't add any advice on this mate, as I've never done it. Was just curious in what you were attempting

Cheers,

Steve

I think that's true if it's just a simple blast and recolour however give the amount of "finxing my" wheels need...

I think my labour is much cheaper than a professionals - I was quoted well over £100 a wheel to repair them!

I'm attempting to be cheap!

I'm hoping ebay wheel filler at like £7 plus mulitpack buys of spray paint primer lacquer for £20ish along with begged and borrowed wet n dry shoudl save me a bundle.

There'll be a full thread in due course once i have all the materials and it warms up enough for me to spend prolonged periods in the garage!
