Water in boot

Featured Replies

Hey Think Tank.

Have a water leak problem.

No 1- getting water in the boot and have checked the rear washer-ok, run a hose over while sat in boot-no sign of entry point.

It seems to be dripping from the body of the car into the boot, about an inch in from the tailgate seal in line with the multichanger. Any ideas?

No 2 - passenger footwell drenched when it rains, think it might be the seal as saw a trickle running into the footwell, is it this?

I have ordered seals for both hoping that this is the easy fix but doubt it is, so all ideas gratefully received.

MTIA.

1. Open the boot slowly when it is covered in water. If you open it fast, water drips in in about the location to mention.

2. Sunroof fitted? Check the drains. Otherwise I would suggest checking the grommet to the nearside of the pollen filter under the scuttle panel as that is good for letting water in. That coupled with blocked drains from the scuttle area will lead to a wet car. You can clean the drain areas out by remove the rear of the front wheel arch liners and removing any compost/leaves which might be there, and then flush through with water from above.

Picture of grommet - with a cable (non-standard) running through it.

[Cheers

but, 1- the boot is not run off from opening as its there when its rained overnight and i have opened the boot when dry even gone through rear seats to double check.

2- dont have a sunroof checked door drains and this am can follow water up to the door seal so am hoping it is sorted when I replace seal.

Doubt its that simple.

Any more ideas?

Could be be the membranes in the doors that are allowing the water in.

I know this may sound strange but take cover off where the wiper motor is and check to be sure the rubber hose is fittied for the washer cause there known to come off and everytime you use your front washer it will leak.....Mine did this Also check that the skoda badge is sealed

Mine leeks in the same way, i will see if i can get a pick at lunch.

When you open the boot, look at the interior plastic trim on the roof just inside, on the left/right you will see a join in the plastic, if i push mine there after its been raining i get a water drop.

Just a thought but have you had a look for a leak around the base of the aerial?

Shirt hanging on a hanger, bushes on show through the front window, towel on the parcelshelf.... what exactly are you up to..... :giggle::rofl:

Thats a fair point, didnt even think twice when i posted that, however nothing sinister happening. It is in the work carpark, its a cloth to absorb the leak, a shirt as i had a site survey this morning and the bushes, well not my choice !! hah ahaha

Thanks VRS me.

Just had a good look and it appears to be the same problem VRS me just that it appears that the water is running down the inside of the bodywork and depositing at the lowest point which is at the boot. Left trim off to see if I can confirm when it next rains, if it is not sure how to overcome this. As for the front can't seem to see sign of it running anywhere just over the seal but once again left trim off to confirm. Seals are ordered at 29/30 quid each.

I could not resist.... have been working at home today, and I had no office conversations to lower the tone of, so I had to do it on here instead

Disappointing though, I was hoping for something "wrong" to be occurring!!

Let me know if you solve it, it's been on my list of things to do but yet another thing I havnt yet. Saturday is the day as misses and baby are out!!

Exactly the same problem here VRS me, small droplet of water gathering on left hand side roof/pillar trim.

I'm confident this tiny little bit of moisture always leads to the rear window misting up badly on cold days....do you guys have the same problem?

Please keep is all updated on this, it's clearly an issue for Octavia owners and hard to spot the water droplet unless you are very observant!

I wonder how many people have this problem and don't even know? I only happened to notice it on mine last week!!!

Eureka! I have found the leaking into the boot after about three hours of pouring water in various locations with lots of paper towels in various gaps in bodywork discovered a pin hole in the drain gully at the top of the tailgate, As to the drip coming through the trim- Took trim(multiple) off and found the water comes through the fixing hole closest to the drip, not sure where it comes from as it was getting dark and wet so will investigate tomorrow when I can get inside. I have taken pics as I go so will get the on for all to see!

In the front, the water is coming over the seal and sill into the footwell, not sure its the seal but gonna put the new one on and see if that cures it if not does anyone know if there are drains in the sill or if its the seal on the door U/S?

Many thanks.

the drains are in the door - if you get down on your backside and look up at the door make sure all 3 (or 4??) of the slots are clear

the water in footwell is almost definitely from a leaky door seal - does the water pool on the rubber part between the sill and the carpet when you open the door? if so it is the door seal.

they can be "repaired" by sticking the seal back on with double sided tape, but probably much better to renew the door seal - be careful removing and refitting though - give me a shout if you need a manual

Just about to say that may be your problem.

I had the same in a number of area's and took ages to replicate.

They were

- Pin hole in top drain gully. Fixed with some black mastic

- Actual boot rubber seal leaking lower left hand side, nightmare to find, and then was a fluke as managed to see droplets still near the seal. Fixed this by removing seal and carefully runing a line of black mastic in the channel then carefully refitting pressing down evenly on seal.

- And lastly the weld studmark near tailgate strut(ther are 2 weld points holding struct bracket in place) Again difficuly to trace but was leaking through the paint. used same black sealant to fix, then used touch up paint to hide it.

hope this helps

Bowders1, Many thanks

Im replacing tailgate seal with new at the weekend, as I noticed some droplets in the same location. hopefully that will sort it. (does any one have tips on replacing seal? have you got a pic of where the strut welds are I think I know where you mean but wanna be sure as this confirms what I thought. I have aquasealed the pin hole and cant replicate that.

STSkoda, Again many thanks. All the symptoms are what you described. New seal arriving tomorrow, could do with advice on replacing the seal without damaging it.

Cheers to both of you.

Look forward to seeing the pics as to where the leak is as I'm tackling this problem this weekend.

Replacing the rear seal is easy. It is in one section that is joined at the bottom if i recall. All you need to do is pull up the section near the centre of the lower boot and it will come up. Same way as the door seal. Then you can just keep pulling up to remove the rest. Cleanup the metal lip that is exposed with seal removed and refit new seal starting at the bottom centre boot so you can then follow the contour of the boot. It you are fiting a new seal then no need to mastic it. I only did that as i reused the old seal.

Here is a pic of the tailgate strut area that i sealed. You should see 1 or maybe 2 indentations where the weld was done above and below the strut. Moie was leaking above the strut and did not look like it was possible but a small pin hole was in the weld under the paint. Also be sure to check the tightness of the tailgate strut nuts as the water can also leak through those.

Well spent most of the day pouring water over the car and am now waiting for a downpour to see if I have fixed the leak above near side rear passenger head rest. Think I have discovered ir and took pictures so if no drip tomorrow ill put pics up so all you others with same problem can get it sorted. No leaks from front door or pin hole leak so just this one.

FYI the VW door and boot seals are much better than the OEM ones.

Cheers for all advice and I will repay the favours.

I see in your location that you have salisbury listed if so do you have VCDS? Pm me

Could be be the membranes in the doors that are allowing the water in.

spent the passed few days replacing most of the membranes (someone had been in there before and ripped them to shreds ) just went out to car- no water dribbling over seals! :)

im really hoping that this has cured it :)

Aftermarket speaker installs, broken glass/electric window issues, lock issues and CCU issues are all reasons why they can get shredded. Plus, lets face it the Octy seems to suffer from all of those issues.... :S
