Scrubbing in rear with 235 tyres

Featured Replies

I just received my new VMR wheels and had 235 tyres mounted on them. With a full load in the rear, the rear tyres are scrubbing the guard. Is there something I can shave on the rear bumper to stop the scrubbing? It mainly occurs on the big bumps.

The wheels are 19x8.5, ET45 and the tyres are 235 35 19. I am lowered 20mm with vogtland springs.

Any help will be appreciated

Can't help on the rubbing issue, but how about some pics. Been looking at some vmr wheels for while, just need to save some more money first :'(

It's because the tyres are too wide for the Octavia arches. Especially combined with the size and width of those wheels, plus a lower offset than that of std Skoda wheels.

Try a narrower tyre?

The combination of offset and width of the wheel combined with the lower ride height is the problem.

I had the arches "rolled" on a previous car (mk3 golf gti) a few years back - that improved the situation but didn't solve it.

Post some pics?

:).

Great minds Rob, great minds :)

I'm running 235 tyres all round with no problems. I'm not sure on the offset of my alloys though.

I had a quick look on ebay and it looks like all the R8 reps (like yours harry) are only 8" wide vs. 8.5" the OP has..

@ wardy - oops, should read before I post.. lol

That surely wouldn't have too big a difference though should it if the tyres are both 235s........

.......or am I just being really thick :S

AND YES - WE MUST HAVE PICS, PLEASE

wouldn't be the first time.. :p

Ok, so a zenith is 7.5 and et 51 (? is that right - i'm using brain cells that have been pickled in alcohol over xmas..) so according to the offset calculators an 8.5" wide rim with 45mm offset would have 7mm less inner clearance (ie closer to the shocker, prob ok though) and extend a further 19mm outwards towards the arch. That's a big difference from OE..

Offset is the key then, perhaps :)

They're scrubbing for a reason, and the tyre width, wheel width and wheel offset will all contribute. Might just be that the offset the OP wheels use is the proverbial straw that's broken the camel's back!

Got a pic of how the car looks now. I will take better pics next weekend. I think I found the problem. Its rubbing on the groove where the rear bumper slots into. Might have to file it down a bit.

I gave up with 235 wide tyres on my previous octy as I got fed up with the tyres constantly rubbing when I had passengers in the back. They will not be rubbing on the liner, but the actuall arch which over on mine caused the tyre to be wear dangerously on the outer edge.

So in the end, did you put on 225 tyres to solve the problem?

They are VMR 709 in Gunmetal.

Another option if you wanted to keep the 235's would be a little expensive, but gerry a machine shop to machine back the hubs 10 -12mm.

I did indeed and never had a rubbing problem after. These were on an 8" wide wheel though, there will be some stretch on a 8.5" wide wheel.

Just got some Yokohama Advan Sport in 225 35 19. See how I go with the rubbing. Got to be careful of gutters now with no sidewall protection. :)

Look very good those; like them. Shade and style suits the shape, plus the contrast against the yellow.

The paintwork's looking great too

You need these. B)

What the heck is a sports headlamp???

:giggle: I dunno either-just thought the black would look well on vin's car with the tints & dark wheels. Brimma might be able to en'light'en us....

Right I'll get me coat....
