TBH I would probably go to Germany, you insure the driver not the car, so you dont expect silly premiums all over as an upside as well as they are much more logical in their approach on the roads.

Good luck in Germany then, as you would really be able to say to the police, 'go & catch some real criminals', because you are far more likely to get caught by an unmarked car, than a marked or speed camera, & they generally dont take any lenient attitude you speeding when caught - Just like France.

i love these 'discussions'

just remember kids dont speed and drive carefull!

Proof. Click me.

I do love this speeding argument. If you speed theres the chance you'll get caught. Its just a shame ROS53Y was driving a van. Im sure he's a careful driver and the different speed limit for vans isn't well known, widely abused and rarely publicised.

Its also a shame the camera vans arent used as they should (at accident blackspots to help educate drivers). They are often Camera Partnerships so not 100% police, if they are police they are often officers working on after retirement or traffic officers with 25years plus service winding down before their retirement, basically the 'shouldnt they be catching criminals or burgulers' argument doesnt stack up...they would struggle to catch a cold :giggle:

If a speeder is caught by the police there is a lottery of how much disgression that officer will use. Its often the attitude of the driver.............often suitable words of advice will suffice.

We all love our cars and need them to get around, police know what 6 points or disqualification will do to peoples jobs/relationships but if the law wasn't enforced society would be a mess.

We all speed and I occasionally let rip the 251 horses and drive like a **** but I do 30 in a 30 zone, no more than 80mph on the motorway, stick to that and the police wont bother you (unless you're very unlucky and driving a van).

An excellent take on a very difficult argument and my sentiments exactly. The fact is if you don't want points then don't speed. I speed occasionally, but I know that if I get caught, I will have no arguments in holding my hands up as I knew what I was doing. I think the OP in this thread has been quite unlucky.

Be a man and own up to it, i speed, iv been caught, i didnt argue and the copper hated it. i was £60 down pocket, 3 points on my licenses and my insurance ended up cheeper.

The lower speeds for vans arent widely advertised and who can honestly say they remember anything from their highway code test??

This is why we should have re-tests. The Highway Code is full of "Construction and Use" Regulations that drivers should be aware of as well as many other bits of information. If I were the OP, I'd be having a look at www.iam.org.uk and hopefully something will stick.

I know I have broke a law but I dont want to hear from anybody saying they never have because we all know for a fact its BO#*OCKS.

Lol, I don't think anyone said anything of the such yet. I think replies on here are simply saying you shouldn't be speeding if you keep getting caught, because your either v unlucky or your perception skills on spotting cameras/police cars aren't very good. ;)

I have no points therefore.. I never speed.

Germany is an interesting case. They do have miles and miles of derestricted Autobahn but the trade-off for being able to go as fast as you like 20km from a city centre is zero tolerance to speeding anywhere else. They have hidden cameras, unmarked cars and they keep most of the money they take in fines so they can buy more kit, faster cars and some interesting automatic bans eg. drive through a red light and get an automatic ban.

And I take it your car is modded? Then you can kiss goodbye to most of your mods in Germany where TÜV approval is required for every modification and unless your supplier has paid a small fortune for their TÜV approval certificate then your car fails the MOT equivalent and you can't even drive it home - you'll have to strip the mods off at the TÜV testing station. And a TÜV approved remap (an extra 30bhp tops on a Fabia) is about £800.

If you lived in Germany, you'd be gagging to get back to the relatively uncontrolled UK. Believe me. I lived in Germany and I still work there a lot and the UK is much nicer place to be a driver.

8.00 a.m. Sunday, three lane carriageway, no traffic, camera in van on bridge operated by speed camera partnership, £60 fine+3points for travelling 78 mph

11.00a.m. Boxing day, dual carriageway, no traffic, followed by unmarked patrol car, (picked up in r v mirror) stopped, informed speed was *** mph, breathalysed, A.OK, sent on my way with some words of advice.

These events took place within the last 5 years and in different counties, but do illustrate the difference in attitudes. I for one am very cynical of the so called "safety camera partnerships"

I drive a 156 hp Sprinter based motorhome and still get overtaken by white van man on dual carriageways.

I would choose Germany as a place to drive: it's still possible to find completely unrestricted motorway and it's certainly used as intended with pretty disciplined drivers. 120mph+ is not uncommon.

Lol 3 pages have gone by and none have realised I posted this in the wrong section... Oops

Where did you intend to put it? It's had a good run here!

The way they treat insurance premiums i.e. insuring the person not the car it makes it much more feasible to own a performance car meaning less demand to modify lesser cars. They take a much more common sense approach to driving IMO, and im sure like anywhere in the world it has its advantages and disadvantages, but if i wanted a modified car and wanted to boy racer all over i'd probs opt for Japan or USA.

Funny..............I thought this thread was about driving a van 1mph 11mph over the speed limit B)

It is, turns out thats the law n tought shizzle... :( I'd love to see how calm people would be if that landed on their door step "ah well its a fair cop" rightttttttttttt

Thought it was illegal to mod in both countries..? Tho I never understand why I see so many modded vehicles in that part of the world..

Id be all 'AHH MAANN!!!!! they caught me! 'gets his wallet out'......'

At the end of the day, broke the speed limit. broke the law. pay the price. no like im going to prison! :smirk:

..... my mother was fined £60 and given 3 points for doing 31mph in a 30mph zone a few years ago.......

Sorry mate, I simply don't believe you.

Ok, So it turns out ME in my van has a lower speed limit on a dual carriageway. From 70 to 60 mph ... Great, why is there not signs saying 60 for vans 70 for cars?

My friend got caught exactly the same... except he was doing 72mph... Gutted for you mate. I'm sure no end of people get caught out on this one.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm  dont think you would...let me friend here explain -----> :moon:

Ah, I love the smell of flame-grilled Briskodan in the morning; smells like breakfast! ;)

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm  dont think you would...let me friend here explain -----> :moon:

Well when i got caught doing 44 in a 30 because i was under the impression the road was a 40, i questioned if the gun had been calibrated on the off chance, which it had. accepted my punishment, i had broken the law, i gave them my details, listend to him say 'Be carefull' and went back to work.

At the end of the day this is my punishement for breaking the speed limit.

I actually ended up benifiting form it, because it was about the time i was looking at buying the Vrs.

The day before i got an insurance quote of about £800.......... got my points and my fine and thought that is it no Vrs for me........... went home did a quote and it was about £725 With the points.

I wasnt ****ed off as he was doing his job as a traffic officer keeping the traffic on the road within the law. SAFE! after that i try to keep my speed in public areas to the legal limit, if i am unaware of the speed on the road i am traveling, then 30 it is! unless it is a duel carrageway (an obvious Duel, No lamposts) then 40/50mph

Motorways are a different situation, if the road is traveling at 80, then i travel at 80, its safer to keep with the flow of traffic at that type of speed.

And i will put my hands up, if the road is empty i will strech my legs a little, but if i get caught doing it then i get caught! i shouldent be doing it on a public highway!

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm  dont think you would...let me friend here explain -----> :moon:

With that attitude it looks like we have a very selfish driver who believes they are above the law, untouchable & life owes them everything. emoticon-0108-speechless.gif

I really really just hope for their sake that the police ( who should be out catching criminals ) are not the ones to walk down the path to the house of their parents to deliver news that no parent should hear. emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Well now we have had the barbecue, let me just thank the OP for bringing to our attention that there are different speed limits for vans on dual carriageways.

He is a little bit miffed that he will get points for this, but accepts now that this is the result of being 11 mph over the limit and not 1mph as he originally thought.

Looks like he is going to spend the next ?years religiously adhering to the limits of our highways.

As for speed awarness courses being a source of revenue....there are costs involved in running them. Hire of venue, materials, salary of person running course. It all adds up.If I am honest I would rather attend a course ,pay more and not get the points on my nice clean license.(clean through luck)

Traffic officers now have to respond to regular calls as well as traffic so these officers probably do catch "real" criminals as well as "innocent" motorists. In fact because of these regular calls some offenders may be lucky and get off because the officer gets a call before they have issued the ticket.
