That wee hook - what's it for, please?

Featured Replies

D'ye know, you lot, I have owned this Yeti thing for about 9 months, covered over 16,000 miles very contentedly, avoided being snared by welsh malevolent sheep, evaded capture by welsh farm collies, enjoyed slip sliding around off road in mud and snow and ice, washed the wheels in deep fords with rutted stoney bottoms, trundled up grassy banks while filming with an iPhone clasped to the steering wheel and providing commentary simultaneously, driven the length of the UK from Merthyr Cynog to Portmahomack.......

.......and until today had never ever spotted the tiny little plastic hooklet that sits there, all innocent-like, just behind where the seat-belt emerges from the recess in the B pillar. It faces rearward, and looks to be insufficient to hold anything of substance - though perhaps your keys????

What the F... is it for? Why is it there?

My first stab at a reason was to try and hang the seatbelt buckle thingy-ma-doodle from it - until I realised that getting the belt round to put it on would be rendered impossible unless one happens to be a rubber-necked contortionist, or a whole lot younger than this old fart. I then wondered about blinds - but I have none. Or is it a way to fasten that pesky middle seat folded forward, Mmmmm? No - thought not.

So - I give up, and pass it over to those who know more about the Yeti than little old me (TP?? you up for this? Or Llani-G?? Perhaps 9 millions know? Or the rock frogger man?? Or the wizard-man??)

C'mon chaps - this just has to be the biggest Yeti mystery other than the actual Yeti itself. What IS the answer?????????

Its a clothes (jacket) hook

Andy

That's right. My Octavia had one as well. I hang my jacket or even coat on it sometimes, but be warned you may trap your jacket in the door, or when it rains will get dripped on .....

I just love the preamble Freshacre:-)

Andy

Oh, yeah?? A clothes hook?? For my jacket? To hang on?

That'll be right then!

Lissen up - I am a BIG BLOKE. My jackets weigh a tonne, and have CHAINS (no - not snow-chains) to hang 'em by. This measly little plakky protuberance will schnapp in half if I attempt that.

Nah - you aint persuaded me, you guys. You gotta try a whole lot better that that.

Hmmmpfh! A clothes hook indeed!!

What a charming Welshman...Didn't think there was a use for one like the mysterious hook (LOL)

Really handy to put your curry somewhere from the take out without it burning your lap or spilling over your boot B)

Kibby, sorry to disillusion you but Freshacre (George) is only a Welshman by adoption. Really he is from that land to the far far north where they hunt the wild haggii and drink a funny liquid made from grain. We accept him as an Honourable Welshman as he is able to sing brilliantly and understands sheep and collies.

Can I ask you a favour? Under your name it says you are from GB, would you like to be a bit more specific and give us a more accurate position? You could also look at one of the pinned threads at the top of the page at a thread that links to a map system, so all of us can be roughly found.

VrS, no the curry hooks are in the boot. If you used the ones by the door you'd risk getting an earful everytime you went round a corner.

Personally I've currently got my Response Hi-Vis coat hanging on mine.

It's the mobile phone death hook. Put a mobile in your coat pocket and hang it on the hook. CRUNCH.

This is, of course, the Sales Rep hook. No Sales Rep drives with his jacket on but needs somewhere to hang it so it does not get creased.

The Sales Rep hook probably started life in Cortinas and Escorts (where it should have remained) but, like the Japanese Knotweed, spread rapidly and uncontrolled throughout the motoring world.

I tried to use my "sales rep hook" last night to hang two hangers from it. It failed as the hook is too short and there is not enough room between it and the B-pillar... So it is not really of much use. The old fashioned hooks that were ON the roof mounted grab rails did work a lot better. But then these became soft damped when the Golf 4 came out and thus no more dedicated hook. But in saying that I could have just hooked my hangers around that! Doh!

Maybe one can hang those pungent trees the car wash people gives you there? emoticon-0140-rofl.gif Or some solar powered fairy lights over Christmas? emoticon-0145-shake.gif

I note that my SE is blessed with FOUR Sales Rep hooks. Two on the door pillar and two incorporated in the rear passenger grab handles. WOW - such generosity of design.

As Graham pointed out there are four curry hooks in the boot but, I feel, that the pinnacle of perfection would be a curry hook in the front passenger footwell.

As everybody appreciates, you just can't have curry swinging around just behind your right ear, especially as the modern paper bags have very little wet strength and a leaking curry could spell disaster.

One other omission that George may shed some light on. Where do you store your used Wellies?

They don't work very well with coat hangers. The one in Elsie attached to the grab handle is fixed in place and does not pivot with the handle. You can only satisfactorily use the garment hanger, I've tried to use coat hangers, but they fall off.

Skoda do a proper coat hanger that clips onto the front seat heatrest posts, which would be a better way of carrying heavier coats. (as long as you don't have any passengers!)

I lay mine across the parcel shelf. The rear view is compromised a bit but, as the line of the parcel shelf is slightly below the tops of the rear seats, not by much. The coat hangars you mention are available at Halfords etc. as well.

Using the parcel shelf is a good idea, but as I'm seeing clients all the time, a typical journey could be 25-40 miles around London, taking about 2-3 hours of driving time, I find it easier to use the back seat or the hanger depending on what I'm wearing. I have also set up the auto unlocking/locking to do the drivers side, so one click and only my side of car is open, rather than having to use the boot all the time. But for more casual journeys, and when the parcel shelf is in place, a good idea.

Hi Dave emoticon-0148-yes.gif

You are right! But perhaps the rest of the narrative from the manual should also be quoted in the interest of safety:

• Do not use clothes hangers for hanging up items of clothing otherwise this will interfere with the protection offered by the head airbag.

Obviously, should the air bag deploy, then whatever is near it may be propelled into the driver / passenger possibly causing injury.

Sorry to be a killjoy as I am loving the humour of this thread.

Yours as ever..........

THE GREAT YETI

Wonderful thread!

These hooks join the other supremely useless items such as "beverage holders". A US import and as much use, at least for the driver, as a chocolate teapot since it is illegal to drink while driving. (Or so several people have found out to their cost when stoppend by the constabulary.)

there are 4 hooks right?

and SM's have 4 boots (tyres)

so the hooks must be for the yeti to hang it's snow shoes on when not needed ?

Nah...........They are for securing Helicopters too (Top Gear on Sunday and you will see!!!) smiley-laughing025.gif

Well hi, Teflon, from the slippery sides of that peninsula in the Norf of Wales,

Now that you ask - about my wellies - I find that hangin' them uppsie-down on the tow-hitch helps them to drain brilliantly, and let's all the dollops of dollop slide away nicely off the outside.

That only leaves the issue of the remaining welly, and where to hang that 'un. Y'know - that long twisty bendy aerial thing just HAD to have some sort f purpose - so I reckon that the second one goes there! So there.

As for the rest of you all - THANKS ever so much (says he ingratiatingly and very much with smarm) for all your replies. It has been enormous - er - fun reading them.

Loved the Ma-in-Law curtain idea, the curry hooks, mobile attachment place - but I reckon it is where I shall be telling said Ma-in-Law to park her dentures when I take her for an off road ramble. I don't fancy being bitten on the back of the head by a projectile consisting of her ground down gnashers as she gasps at the road-holding abilities of the Yeti.

However - and I say this with some authority - MY little plastic bilateral protuberances will be used to restrain the family hounds by attaching their leads to them. You see, and be VERY careful how you react to this bit of news - VERY careful INDEED - this grouchy old fart, all 16 stone of him, happens to be inordinately fond of Yorkies (the dawg, not the choc-bar), and we can get one on each side, nicely affixed.

(If you have a wee look here, you will see on of the little darlings in action.....

Enjoy!!)

There we are! Problem solved.
