Winter tyres & steel wheels

Featured Replies

Again just to close the loop for future searches!

After member ejstubbs posted here that his T5 centre caps did not fit I did a bit of research and found that a VW T5 in fact uses a 5x120 stud arrangement vs the VW Caddy and Yeti that uses a 5x112 arrangement. So I have to admit I led people up the garden path here! Although my first caps (the ones with the written words VOLKSWAGEN and no VW logo on the photos of this thread) were advertised as from a T5 they were in fact from a Caddy! Hence my own confusion.

So to anyone out there trying to source centre caps do NOT buy T5 cente caps. You have to find the far scarcer Caddy ones.

Oh bu99er - got both, currently using Caddy ones so hadn't noticed T5 didn't fit, and I've had them a while.emoticon-0106-crying.gif

At least they were ebay not full price!

Thanks for posting the correction.

Anybody want some T5 covers?

I found this interesting link to the VW Caddy forum showing all the VAG group steel wheels and their part numbers! From 15" to 20".

I suspect for winter tyres that only these will be applicable for a Yeti:

Size: 16"

Size: 16 " 6J X 16 Vitus, Silber" VW

PCD: 5X112

ET: 50

Tyres: 205/55/16

Partnumber: 1T4 071 496 A 666

Size: 16 " 6J X 16 Sima, Silver" VW

PCD: 5X112

ET: 50

Tyres: 205/55/16

Partnumber: 1T4 071 496 C 8Z8

Size: 16 " 6,5J X 16 Enea , Silver" Seat

PCD: 5X112

ET: 50

Partnumber: 5P0 601 025 J 72V

Size: 16 " 6,5J X 16 Elio , Silver" Seat

PCD: 5X112

ET: 50

Partnumber: 5P0 601 025 K 72V

Now, why is there FOUR different names for silver?!?!

Hi folks

I currently drive an Octy 2 L&K estate and have winter tyres (Nokian WRG2 205 55 r16 91H) supplied by my tyres and fitted to steel wheels. I am thinking of a yeti for mynextcar (either a 1.2 or a 1.4 2WD) and am wondering whether I will be able to use my existing wheels and tyres on a yeti. I have seen posts on here which suggest the tyre size would work but my dealer has said that they would not.

Grateful for any insights.

Many thanks

Domhnall

There is an excellent guide to winter tyre sizes by The Plumber in the Tech section.

thanks, really helpful, if baffling. So it looks like I have the right size of tyre but I'm not sure whether the rims for the octy will fit the Yeti. Not sure how I determine what my current rims are.

As I understand it Octi rims won't fit. Offset is all wrong!

Hi,

if there original VAG (Skoda) rims, then the size should be stamped on them between two of the bolt holes.

5575328542_379e623300_z.jpg

7J x 16 H2 ET45

7J = depth of rim in inches

16 = diameter of rim in inches

H2 = rim bead profile

ET45 = offset (position of the mounting face off the rim centre line)

The recommended steel rim sizes for the Yeti are;

7J x 16 H2 ET45 (as above) or 6J x 16 H2 ET50

TP

aha, if it stops raining and blowing a gale I will have a look, thanks. I suspect they are not VAG original as they came from Mytyres. You never know though. Dealer reckoned they would fit but the tyres would be the wrong size. Ho hum, the research continues.

:)

I have a question for Yeti owners who use winter tyres.

I'm considering my next car as a Yeti but researching tyre availability the 215/60-R16 seems quite difficult to get hold of at the moment, at least from any decent manufacturer.

Is this supply situation normal, hence people using 205/55-R16.

I'd been hoping to use this size as I have a set of decent Conti TS830 but when I see the pics with this size fitted they just look wrong.

:(

Apologies to those who use these, no offence intended.

But I'd have expected winter tyre availability to get a bit more reasonable by now as opposed to last December.

reifen had a workable choice but nothing brilliant tbh

pneus-online some but quite limited selection

mytyres almost zilch apart from ditchfinders

So what is normal experience? I've been using the 205-55-16 for years hence used to tyres being available subject to timing when you buy.

Winter tyres are basically not available at the moment. You will have to wait until August at the earliest to get hold of some now. I only want 2, but can't find any anywhere. I'm after Contiwintercontact TS810. I have been told by several supplier to come back in the summer........

205/55 R16's are a recommended size, but you lose about 1/2" ground clearance and as you state they don't look right.

AHa!

The Octavia Has rims as follows 6Jx16H2ET50 so they should fit.

And my tyres are Nokian WRg2 at 205 55 R16 91H so if I'm reading your guide right they should be OK too. Now all I need to do is figure out how to track down a Yeti :wonder:

Try the Skoda used website. Depends on what you are after. I know of a 1.4tsi 2WD up for grabs.....

cheers, there's a 1.2 SE near me in Dunfermline but I'm probably planning a change towards the Autumn and having been used to the L&K I will probably be looking at the elegance. The decision still has to be made as to whether it should be 1.2 or 1.4. I've driven the 1.4 but want to have a go in the 1.2 before I make up my mind.

Cheers

Yesterday, I refitted the standard Spitzbergs and 'summer' Goodyear Excellence tyres after 2500 miles on Skoda 16" steelies and Nankang SV-2 215/60 R16 99H XL. Tyres were from My Tyres at £64.50 each. A set of Skoda wheel trims finished them off nicely.

I went for these tyres in the end as they were in stock and I thought at that price I'd give them a go and see how I got on. One review I read said they had turned his 'most useless of all cars in the snow' - a BMW 330d Sport Coupe, into something very driveable :D . I never actually got to try the tyres out in show but on frosty and wet (and very wet) roads they were very good - excellent grip and water displacement. The deeper sidewalls made the ride noticeably softer with no real increase in noise. Worked fine in the dry too.

Back on the standard set up, the difference was immediately apparent. Much firmer ride but much better turn in. I still think road noise is similar. Winters now stored until 01 Dec 2011.

Good to hear you again aerofurb. I miss the comfort of the 215's. but hey, the track beckons next weekend, so I will be grateful that I'm on the rubberbands......I guess.emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Hi aero,

thanks for the update and good to hear from you again; hope your keeping well

Regards as always,

TP

I changed back to the original summers this week, handling was nice, but ride was slightly better on the winters.

Only had chance to experience the wider rubber for a few days as my Yeti has gone now, so no longer a SM owner, always an enthusiast though ;)

On the plus side, if anybody is after a superb set of Conti TS830s on 16" alloy rims, give us a shout.

Hi Aerofurb

I'm glad to see your review of the Nankangs. I put a set of SV-2s on my son's Rover 25 having used Nankangs in a different size on a previous Honda FR-V. Son has now put a set of summer Nankangs on his car and is happy with them.

I may well put set of Nankang NS-20s on my Yeti when the OE Dunlops get to the limit. I don't do track days and I have a set of winter tyres.

Hi loadswine ,

I just sent you a PM

Good to hear a good report of a budget brand. I've often wondered if you can feel the difference between a now £72-60 SV-2 and a £120 Dunlop et al... I've personally never really felt the difference between tyres back to back. I have noticed it going from winter to summer as the winters were noisier. More comfortable? Nah can't say I noticed that to be honest. I do want some tyres in this size rather than my 205/50s and might be tempted by the price of these. Especially after your good review.

Fear not, good folk - I'm still here! If I start reading all the posts every evening though, I'll never get any work done!

I must stress I didn't try the Nankangs in snow but they were noticeably grippier in frost/ice and in the wet. I thought it would make an interesting trial given the price - I was going for the Vredesteins but by the time I looked, none were available. Then there were the Pirellis for double the price of the Nankangs but the reviews said they were great in the snow but not in the dry. Even in the Chilterns I needed an all round tyre (no pun intended), not pure a snow job.

This has been my second winter on the Nokians and this year, though the longest spell of constant snow was shorter at around two weeks, it was much much deeper. The only problem I had was when the Octavia was in up past the radiator grill and the car was more or less grounded. No tyres are going to help when you're effectively buried. Thankfully we all got organised and dug out our street at that point as it was a few days before the council sent round a JCB to clear the residential areas. I am going to switch back to summer tyres in the next couple of weeks as they are forecasting the temperatures should be heading above 9 degrees soon - a chilly 4 again this morning so no rush to change just yet. :D
