Having done just over 800 miles in my new vRS I am very, very pleased with it. However, I have got a couple of minor niggles that I wanted some advice on.

1. The brakes can tend to be very squeeky at slow speeds. This is noticeable even after a small journey and then parking up. Is this common? Or are the brakes not bedded in properly yet :confused:

2. I have found that engaging reverse is not always easy. Sometimes as I go into reverse I can only push the stick half way up and I hit some resistance. If I push harder it does go in. Normally though I will try 2-3 times (while releasing and repressing the clutch) and eventually it goes in smoothly.

Should I be concerned about either of these?

The gearbox will still be tight, usually takes a few thousand for things to loosen up.

If your stil having problems then ask your dealer to drain and refil the gearbox using the lighter oil that Skoda provide, this helps the oil get into the syncros and helps changing.

Cheers Ross. Having never had a new car before I was not sure whether the gearbox would need to loosen up or whether it should be smooth from day 1.

63,000 on mine and the reverse gear is still stiff! Had a new clutch at 42,000!

I bought a new vRS Octy. I have done 6000 miles now and my brakes still squeek. The rear brakes are the problem and are particulary bad when applying the brakes when reversing. There is an interesting thread detailing this problem, where a member states that VW cars have had this problem. The solution was for the main dealer to fit some sort of weights the the rear calipers. I'm going to ask my Skoda dealer if they know of this fix.

Interesting. I did notice when I was cleaning the rear calipers at the weekend that they are VW/Audi calipers, so I guess it's the same problem. And I have also noticed that it is worse when applying the brakes in reverse.

Just to be contrary I have found the opposite to be true

Sitting at traffic lights, hand resting on gear lever in Neutral, go to set off and slightly too much pressure and we go backwards :eek:

I dont get any noise from my rear brakes , why am I different :(

I get the brake squeek only if I leave the car at night or I've just washed it....park it in the garage and alls fine.

Cars have feelings to you know.

Sounds like you have a problem with the spring in the selector mechanism. Do you need to push the gear selector down (1.5 - 2 inches) to get reverse or just apply sideways pressure. I have never managed to select reverse in error, even when making progress.

Mine now has 47k miles on, original clutch and original brakes. Selecting reverse sometimes requires lifting the clutch and pressing again before I can select the gear.

I have seen the little plastic guide break off on the gearlever so reverse can be selected without having to push the lever all the way to the side and down.

The lever has to be dropped down out of the bottom of the car and a new part fitted, bit of a labourous job.

I've noticed that when the car's cold selecting first gear is a bit stiff.

I think it's a VAG thing , have heard this a few times , although I don't personally have a problem with my Octy , I certainly did with my Vento VR6 .

Gear lever only needs to be pushed down around 3/4 inch and given a little sideways movement. Car is in for service on thursday and so will ask them to take a look at it, although to be honest I've kind of got used to it now

Just to add my two pence worth...

My Octy vRS has now done almost 3000 miles and the brakes groan when going in reverse which is a bit alarming for passengers!!! They sometimes they squeal slightly when braking at slow sppeds too.

The gearbox is pretty notchy. I often have to try over and over to engage reverse and the other day, having left it in reverse on a hill, it seemed as if it was almost jammed in reverse :(

It sometimes doesn't want to go into 1st at traffic lights either - although putting it into 2nd and then moving it into 1st helps.

I put this all down to 'running in' and loosening up but maybe I am being too optimistic?!

I'm also waiting to see what comes of the modification being developed to sort out the brake squealing.

It won't 'run in' believe me, I may be a 'newbie' here, but in a year I have done 43,000 in my VRS, so I reckon I might know a thing or two???? The gear selection and brake problem gets worse as the mileage goes up! Just traded mine in today and got a 53 plate with 6500 on it and the clutch/gearbox feels totally different! Get it looked at within its warranty is my advice!

3. The difficulty I am having with closing the boot.

Regarding No.1 can anyone tell me whether an anti-squeel kit is available for the Octy vRS rear brakes?

Seems as though we all have the same problems but to differing degree's.

I have done 5000 and it still does not like going into reverse, but all said and done when u r going forward and ripping up the tarmac leaving confused expressions on more expensive cars i think its a small niggle that i can live with.

Not yet!!

Took the car back to the dealer and demonstrated the problem with the brakes while dropping backwards down a slope. The service guy reckoned it was a problem with one of the rear calipers (which would make sense) but could not pinpoint which one. They ordered two new calipers, left and right. One came in within a week but the other was on back order and still has not come in - these parts were ordered over 6 weeks ago!

So currently, the car is booked to go back into the dealer on the 9th May as the other caliper should be there by then.

As for the gear selection problem. I have done just over 3000 miles now and it has improved slightly (or am I just getting used to it?) but it still does not feel right...
