Plasma TV buzzing, Comet won't exchange

Featured Replies

I certainly wouldn't find a buzzing TV acceptable.

Did you buy it on credit card? CC company is jointly liable for the purchase.

Also get in touch with your local trading standards and tell Comet you're doing it.

Also tell Comet you will be writing to your local paper (or any other paper's raw deal type column).

Often the thought of a bad news story for the larger company can grease the wheels of their customer service depts. It's worked for me in the past.

you can also write to the MD of Comet or the parent Kesa Electricals.

I agree with the SoGA.

I have the same problem as OP in that I can hear the same thing on all Sony and Panasonic plasmas. To me it sounds like the 'static' sound you get with a CRT goes from white screen to black screen but at lower frequency. Most people just don't hear it or tune it out. I can close my eyes and can tell that an ad break is coming from the sound. Fortunately, I found this out before I bought and ended up with a Samsung, which I can only hear if I am a foot away from it.

If you're like me you will never be able to tune it out, so I would push for them to exchange it for a Samsung one, even if you have to take a financial hit. Problem with SOGA, small clains court, etc, is that chances are they wont hear it and think you are mad/unreasonable.

ps/

It must be my ears, as I can hear the inverters in some brands of laptop too.

You have consumer rights. As you only bought it Saturday, take it back and get another one. You don't have to have an engineer out as the TV 'is faulty from new'. If the new one does the same then take it back for a refund. If it annoys you then it is not of reasonable quality for you which considering you have spent £x amount on it then you are entitled to something right for you.

Yes you can - you are the consumer and if the buzzing isn't acceptable to you or detailed in the spec/instruction manual then it is technically a fault. Whether the staff in store think it is acceptable or not is nothing to do with it. I for one can't stand buzzing appliances and have taken things back in the past if they do this. The law is on your side. Comet will try and wriggle out of it but just keep saying that under the Sales of Goods Act it is not of 'reasonable quality' and the fact you have had it less than a week.

Its not up to them to test the TV - you aren't happy with the buzzing so the SOGA comes into play.

If i bought a brand new car and the bonnet was dented, the car to all intents is drivable as described....doesn't mean you have no rights....

that is slightly different! if the TV screen was broken then yes, not fit. if the back was dented, Managers discression unless affects workings of the TV

think about it Car = £1000s of £££ TV only £100s of £££ theres the difference.

It is down to the retiler/manufacture to Deem fit for purpose. you can throw that around all day long but untill the retailer agrees it is not fit for purpose not much you can do. as anyone can use this argument anyday if it works that way.

When i was on CSA it was ppl like you who just ruined my day.

Tip for comet if they wont divulge the returns policy. which varies from product to product. dont ring panasonic you will get nowhere.

1 Go onto the website and get the SKU number.

Ring your local store, quote the SKU, ask for the details of the returns policy, it is in the bottom half of the screen they should be looking at (the system is still the same i think)

these are the returns policys set by manufaure! just dont share you may have a faulty tv until after you have this information. B)

All plasma TV's buzz to some extent, in the same way that CRT's did since they use simillar technology (phosphors) to generate the picture. Some people are more susceptable to the buzz than others, ie. it annoys some and others dont hear it at all. Some say that mine also buzzes (Panasonic TH42-PZ81) but I cant hear it at all.

PZ81? the First freesat one? one of the Best TVs they ever did

Some ppl say my parents one buzzes but its V.Rare ppl say that.

Had some legal advice via a helpline that my trade union supplies free of charge.

Apparently i would have to return the TV on the grounds of it not being "of satisfactory quality"

The legal advisor explained that if a reasonable person found the TV satisfactory then it may be difficult to return it.

I am the only person out of four who have listened that can actually hear it from viewing distance. Other people have heard it but only when right in front of the TV.

Thing is, i don't want to change it for a different manufacturer or a different tv, just one that i can't hear buzzing. I don't want to spend any more and i couldn't see the store swapping it for a cheaper TV and refunding me the difference.

As a test i secured a towel to the wall behind the TV and i could not hear the buzzing from my viewing position. When the towel is removed i can hear the noise again.

This is why i am considering some sort of sound absorbing foam/tiles for the wall behind the TV.

One other thing, why cant i just get a direct local number to my store any more without having to go through some automated switchbord/call centre cr4p.

Can't find a SKU number. But there is a product number. Is that the same thing. See link:-

My links

Yea thats the SKU :)

Well they have changed that on there site lol. ALWAYS 6 Digit numbers. :smirk:

I used to dole out the direct number to our store every day! its a rit PITA the switchboard are so protective over that, they are that stores customer not yours you phone jocky!

Which Comet store are you dealing with?

PZ81? the First freesat one? one of the Best TVs they ever did

Some ppl say my parents one buzzes but its V.Rare ppl say that.

My dad has that TV too, it's really good.

My brothers new 42VT20 seems pretty quiet. I can hear a buzz very slightly, but the volume of the surround sound drowns it out so it's never been a problem for us.

I am trying to deal with the Hull branch at St Andrews Quay.

I do have an update.

Finally managed to get through to the store itself and speak to the manager.

I explained that had i known about this buzzing i would not have bought the tv. He has agrred that i can return it to the store and swap it for any tv i like.

Now if this plasma buzz is potentially going to be on any plasma i get i am considering an LED TV instead.

Can anyone recommend one for around the £700 mark???

I am reluctant to swap like for like, as good as it is just in case i have the same issue.

So my options are

1. Get a different brand of plasma an hope it doesn't buzz? (i could have a good listen instore i guess)

2. Get the best LED i can in 42".

Which way to go? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

£££'s makes no difference in the SOGA.

A TV should not buzz. I have 3 TV's in the house, a iMac, 2 LCD monitors and a Laptop. None of these buzz. If I was to buy a TV and i got it home and it was buzzing I would deem it faulty....If i took it back to the store and all the other TV's of that model had the same buzz i would deem it inherrently faulty. On the basis that no other LCD/plasma device i own buzzes and other TV's in the store do not buzz. Also the fact that if there is nothing on the manufacturers website or in the instruction manual stating that a buzzing sound may be apparent in low volume environments etc then i can't see how anyone can refute it especially the staff in Comet :giggle:

I am sure that Small Claims Court would agree in your favour too.

Mate has just bought this one and is well impressed with it.

For LED and how thin it is it is an awesome price

EDIT: here is the link to comet - http://www.comet.co.uk/p/LED-TVs/buy-LG-42LE4500-LED-TV/696900

personally would get a refund and get it from Amazon for much cheaper with a million times better customer service...

Try 01482 386 930 next time...

Not sure how Comet are on price, but I see Richer have a couple of Samsung and LG 40/42 options at £600-700. Can't vouch for those particular models though.

Steve

Price match with John Lewis or M&S??

aaaarrrrrrggghghghghghg

My head hurts.

I don't know what to do now.

I have already listened to the same model as mine in store and it buzzes. like mine. I guess it could be a bad batch but i am not sure if i can be bothered to take that chance as i don't have the time to be messing around swapping yet again.

I am thinking of this maybe:-

My link

But i doubt it will be as good a picture quality as the Panaasonic.

Still considering some type of acoustic material for the wall behind this one.

HOW MUCH!! Can't see its much different to the model i listed besides freeview HD and 100hz...

Have a read through the reviews here My link to help you decide on a suitable replacement.

Returned the TV today.

Replaced it with a 40" Samsung series 6 LED one.

So far i am very happy with it.

Perhaps Comet should stop trading in the UK, if either they or some of their staff have decided the SoGA does not apply to them.

It isn't up to the store to decide reasonable quality and in the first 6 months, it is up to them to prove that there is no fault rather than the customer to prove there is one.

None thanks. I shop online so i don't have to deal with the spotty store monkey's anymore. Amazon are top of my list for Customer Service.

You must have hated people like me....who weren't a push over you mean....
