Is Yeti mania common among older males?

Featured Replies

Yeah,

I'm 29 with a 4 month old boy, and buying the Yeti to help us cart around all the trash baby ownership brings!

63 and prematurely retired from teaching as a consequence of the previous government deciding not to pay for training disabled adults to get them back into work or give them greater independence anymore. Not really a political point as the current government hasn't restored the funding either.

1.2 DSG because of leg problems (couldn't stretch to a 4X4 DSG). Brilliant on snow, ice and standing water covered roads on winter tyres. On one trip to a wedding in Wales mid December (when Cardiff was almost cut off) mine was the only 2WD to arrive up the hill to the hotel near Neath in the morning, all the rest were 4WD. (Could have been coincidence of course.) Most guests didn't arrive at all.

Coming from a 2L DSG Octavia it feels taller and roomier, easier to get in and out of with dodgy leg and stiff back, great for the 89 year old mother-in-law in the back seat. Miss the torque of the diesel but for a 1.2 petrol its impressive, no problems on motorways except keeping the speed down to conserve fuel at £5.70 a gallon. (27p a gallon when I started driving.)

Love it.

Daughter says its ideal for geriatrics!

Boot needs to be larger to accomodate the amount of stuff the m-i-l takes for a few days away. She used to fill the Octavia estate boot, no problem.

No regrets about the purchase so far.

Don't worry , we had to have DSG for medical reasons, and only had the 1.2 available with it at the time. We have not regretted it, I put the winter tyres on just at the start of the really bad weather, and they transformed the car, going through several inches of snow, ice and slush with no problems on our hills, we were amazed how good it was. We do a lot of short trips, and find the petrol engine warms up much quicker than our old 1.6 Golf diesel, and on reflection is perfect for our type of use, but not everybody's of course.

That's encouraging, thanks.

I think it is more about the Yeti delivering what the older market leans towards.

Our Honda Jazz also met the same aspirations if a little small

We had a Mitsubishi Space Star (not Space Wagon) that we miss.

Our priorities

Easy access.. good headroom...no looking through the headlining instead of windscreen (tall driver).

Ability to set seats (driver/passenger) high and low for different drivers with mobility problems...

Reliable ..

High spec at reasonable price point.

Adaptable load carrier (larger than Jazz)

Stylish...A bonus...

We found a considerable price jump to get similar to Jazz features but say 10% bigger

mean't going from £13k to £20k+ which is a lot more than 10% The YETI was more like £17k

Downsides :

Thought neighbours would laugh...they didn't...

2 warranty items 3 months old....Has it got Honda like build quality....time will tell.

Some features..Fold down seats ..spare wheel arrangement in boot a bit of a dogs breakfast

Looks as if boot is bigger than it is in practice.

Electronic control/features/variations a bit overdone...out of warranty potential nightmare?? Enough for Doctor Who.

Handbook confusing poorly illustrated...poor translation from a Chinese original translation..

A few pennies to rectify faults...invisible boot light for example

Centre arm rest/Jumbo box position.

Rear view mirror too low.

Some side/rear visibility issues...wing mirrors a tad too small.

Mixed feelings about dealers...the jury's out.

Skoda UK ......somebody on this forum said 'a bunch of housewives'...Not politically correct but I get his drift.

More like the sort of response you get when you ring up Procter & Gamble about Fairy Liquid!!

I asked one person where he got info from and he said 'I googled it' ...I joke not (LOL)

Likes..

Lively engine 1.2TSi

Lovely DSG....the thought of the complexity still frightens me as well as Turbo/Super Charged engine.

(Would probably right car off if major problems when out of warranty).

Stylish interior (classy is the word) Good quality materials.

Have a look at a Ford Kuga if you want to see how to build a tacky interior!!!

Drive and ride very good if just a tad hard on those 17" SE spec wheels.

Free market research for Skoda CZ / UK??? (No not UK it might confuse them further!!!)

And FINALLY............Is Yeti mania common among older males AND FEMALES...

Edited by kibby

Dunno if it's Mania, but anyway, I am soon to be 67 and I retired last Novamber.

Looking at the different ranges of age just rubber stamps my opinion of my beloved car , it appeals to everyone on all levels of needs , we chose our one as we wanted to replace my golf mk5 tdi 140 (186) which was pushing just over 80,000 miles with a bigger car but not massive as our needs changed during ownership with our second little lad so we looked at the blobby golf (yuck) then the tiguan which has a smaller boot and access for the kids seats in the rear is more difficult due to the rear seats being set further into the boot area and the door inner shuts block the bottom of the seats and its not as nice to drive,so then the monster what a perfect car access, comfort, driveability and price perfect and its a golf but not a golf for reliability and i know the mechanical side of it well from owning the golf which i gave to the wife as her car was getting older.

So summing up whatever you need from a car the monster ticks a lot of boxes for everyone and it's such a giggle when people realize it's a skoda badge on the front or back as the approach you in sainsburys or tesco car park begging a look inside and their pretty exclusive at the moment

P.s I would love to retire at 43 but until #i win the lottery it's not practical and if I do i'll buy another Yeti for the wife ! (and maybe finish the kitchen if the wife reads this)

48 with youngish family (11 and 8). I have survived all the Skoda jokes and am now enjoying the admiring comments. Have just done 10k miles and enjoyed them all!

30 here... :)

Getting into 'old fart' territory; 56 and working flat out still as my pension pot is not big enough but I relish my work.

Needed to move to a 4x4/SUV/MPV to get higher driving position and easier getting in/out due to dodgy hip and wanted DSG for arthritic right ankle (I use left foot braking). Walk the dog regularly and cycle (occasionally).

My wife says I should have got a Yeti sooner, she didn't like my Octavia vRS at all (size/visibility issues) but Yeti has a vague similarity to her Doblo that she loved.

Interestingly my son, 22 and finished University last year, relished driving my vRS but says he won't be seen dead driving Yeti - so I haven't bothered to put him on the insurance!

60 and still going strong(ish)! Still working, too.

After owning two Octy Estates, I do find the the boot space small. But I soon worked out that lots of stuff I used to cart around all the time was totally unnecessary, and manage very well. On the odd occasions I do need to carry a lot of stuff (often heavy and bulky), dropping the rear seats provides all the space I need. My work takes me on to construction sites and remote rural locations (often accessed by tracks). Having been grounded in the Octy several times, the higher ground clearance and better traction of the Yeti was an attractive proposition. It has paid rich dividends, too! I have not got stuck anywhere so far!

And, I still just love to drive it - I feel renewed joy every time I get in it! Older male Yetimania? Yep, afraid so!

69, retired, trying to keep fit with lots of dog-walking after a major health scare 2 years ago. Was a biker for most of my life, owning numerous models from the 1950's including a Velocette Venom, Tiger 110 etc.,

ending up with a 1978 BMW R100(the last model with real spokes if I remember correctly).

Maybe we should have a competition for the oldest Yeti owner, never thought I'd reach the stage when the dreaded 70th birthday expiry date on my licence was looming!

I had a '96' BMW R100R Mystic with spoked wheels - unusually the spokes were around the other way to enable running on tubeless tyres instead of the normal tubed ones with spoked wheels.

Hmm - know what you mean with the driving licence expiry -I'm not too long after you - scary stuff.

Perhaps you have won "The Oldest Yeti Owner Competion" - or perhaps some won't own up :giggle:

I can get a 9 ft fly rod ready to go in it so I'm happy! Best fishing car ever! emoticon-0103-cool.gif

And I'm only 55 - semi-retired / lazy / self employed

Aha! The description fits me well too, but I was 60 this January, so consider you very youthful. Fly fishing is one of my all-life-time passions too..never considered I can now get my assembled trout rods, at least, in The Beasty - whereas my old Golf didn't really work. Although setting up by the river is a bit of the pleasure for me, too.

There does seem to be a preponderance of mature male types among us, doesn't there..

This is an AGEIST THREAD and needs to be BANNED.emoticon-0121-angry.gif

There are other reasons to buy a Yeti. Rural areas where we live need something more than a saloon, four wheel drive and good ground clearance for example.

One thing the Yeti is NOT is a Chelsea Tractor beloved by Yummy Mummys.

One thing the Yeti is NOT is a Chelsea Tractor beloved by Yummy Mummys. - totally agree.

Mind you, at the risk of adding a sexist slant to an ageist thread, a few yummy mummies always brighten the day ...

47 - last week!, The Yeti gets all my Pike fishing gear in, two race bikes, and a wife who doesn't understand how to pack light. Obviously I don't get all that in the Yeti at the same time but you can always leave the wife at home....

I truly think I have found a car that for once matches my needs, wonderful car.

37 here

Just ordered my SM last week. Hopefully being a TSI I won't have to wait too long.

I am 70 and although a Yeti admirer decided to go for a Mercedes A Class, which also has a devoted following among the chronologically challenged. Mercedes have now decided that the car does not appeal sufficiently to the 'youth' market. So the next A Class will be a BMW 1 Series lookalike.

I have an Octavia Scout DSG on order, same ride height as the Yeti which had a test drive in but much more room in the boot for the dogs and the fishing gear. With the through hatch in the back seats a 10' 6" flyrod set up will fit no bother. The other reason I chose the Scout over the Yeti was VAT free and 0% finance deal which saved me thousands as I got VAT free on all the options too!! For longer rods that won't fit set up I have rod holders that will fit on the roof and bonnet. I agree with the thread in respect that the badge does not matter as I have got older value, quality and reliability matter much more. Skodas are now excellent cars with prices that make them top value for money too. I live in Angus in Scotland and the four wheel drive and the ground clearance will make life in the snow much easier next year, my current BMW 530D Touring although a quality car was useless in the recent bad weather.

Good choice and welcome to Skoda ownership; even though it might not be a Yeti. B)

The Octavia Scout is a fine vehicle too.

42 (still think I'm 21  ) wife same age. We have 3 girls aged - 7, 10 and 13 and of course the 2 huskies, and so make good use of our Yeti as it's our only car. And yes, we all fit in!

Work a normal(ish) part time job in the evenings and a comic book artist during the day.

I'm female, 22, blond and love posing in my Yeti down at Sarfend:rofl:

No, I can't argue with the thread - I'm actually male and bought my Yeti as part of my attempt to stave off old age on reaching 50.

My 2 kids are still at school and find the Yeti great to travel in. They even seem to get the whole inverted snobbery of driving around in a Skoda when their mates enjoy Range Rovers and Mercs to travel to school in. There again they haven't got much option as it's either the Yeti or Mum's Roomster.

64 retired early, had two new knees installed then had prostrate cancer neutralized by Dr Who type accelerators , all sorted , then went and traded in beloved fabia 3 1.9 tdi and bought My lovely red Yeti and a suitable touring caravan , Will be annoying non caravaners on UK roads this summer then off to Spain for the winter with the van, having a great time spending my kids inheritance

The Octavia Scout is a fine vehicle too.

When I came to replace my last Octy Estate, the plan was to get another one, but I was going to look at the Scout. But, at one of the dealers, there was a Yeti CR140, which I had a test drive in. For the first time in my life I suffered an instant dose of "I want one!". The Scout didn't get a thought after that........
