DRL-rage

Featured Replies

Oh yes, in 5 months ownership I've been flashed dozens of times.

These are 4 different types of reaction I have seen;

1. Oncoming traffic flashes their headlights,

2. Oncoming traffic flashes their foglights,

3. Car in front on motorway flashes their rear fogs, then you pass them and they flash the fronts,

4. Pedestrians shout and point!

Remember VRS DRL LED's are techno-lights so techno-notice.

Think I have been flashed a few times, never mind eh?

As above, I techno-notice

Lol. I'm sure there's a Norwich or a Scotland joke in there somewhere. :giggle: I'd be worried when this starts happening!

I see what you did there

I can agree to some degree with the website, some of the new cars with DRLs and Xenons are really bright.

However, the majority are fine, 99% of the cars with DRLs and Xenons I have no problem with.

Edit: Saying they have 'real world figures' that they are causing more deaths also seems a bit far-fetched.

I've been flashed once...I agree the positioning is bad, but having been followed by the wife I can state that they are in no way dazzling & the people who flash are just being pedantic & need therapy! :giggle:

You can deactivate the DRL function using a switch behind a panel located by the fuses to the right (down a bit) of the steering wheel.

You may be interested that we have an odd anti DRL looney on this site, as seen in a previous DRL post discussion.

The fact that Scandinavia has overwhelming stats over god knows how many years to prove its safer, seems to bypass the anti DRL community.

Getting back to the OP, I had no reaction from people when I had my previous car, or have had any with my current one, although I really did notice a difference in the number of people who didnt try to jump out of junctions on me, when I picked up my previous car which came with DRL's.

Oh yes, happened to me - both with the DRL and the static cornering lights (which light up a fog light depending on which way the wheel is turned/or you indicate). It is only one local guy who goes nuts everytime he sees the car - arm waving, pointing etc. I know where he lives and I am considering printing some stuff off the net and popping it through his door so he can increase his knowledge. I might even point out that he should be parking his whole car on the pavement but that's just being petty ;-)

People are people - I sometimes get flashed by oncoming drivers as I'm just coming over a brow of a hill - of course my lights are going to be higher than your eyes - and you'll be doing the same to other drivers as you drive up the hill, but some people are so self-centred they don't care.

Whilst I don't worry about who uses DRL's I've never seen the point in everybody using them. Yes when Volvos and Saabs were driving around with them on 30 odd years or however long since they started with them, they did indeed stand out from the crowd and were clearly more visible than others. But just imagine if EVERYONE uses them! In that case the people who will be most visible will be the odd ones who turn them OFF!. It will just become a maze of lights everywhere in citys and towns together with trafic lights advertising lighted signs and the rest. For that reasonI just don't get DRL's at all.

I actually quite like the DRL's on the vRS , they are tasteful ,unlike the other manufacturer's cars.......BMW's, Audi's and Citroen's have all been trying to out do eachother ,and it's quite sad really as they are all way over the top.

As for the rage, I've been flashed on numerous occasions since having the car, particularly by lorries, who flashed my old vRS whenever I had my fog lamps on.

Tough #### really, they'll all have to get used to them! :giggle:

No, sidelights literally just dims the DRL's, no light from the main headlights.

I am trying to work out the logic here. As dusk approaches, one thinks "Hmm, I'd better put the side lights on otherwise people will stop noticing me." Click. "That's better. And just to confirm everything is OK, my dash lights are now on." Smash. WTF! :o

They are still pretty bright when dimmed mate. They are far too bright on full power for night use.

Let me pursue my logic. They are far too bright at night - but one can have them that bright during the day because it's more bright outside and people will not notice them so much.

They are very noticeable during the daytime, making other drivers more aware of your presence, a good thing from a safety point.

They are not dazzling during the daytime because of the daylight.

However, at dusk/dawn, they double as sidelights, dim slightly, but not enough to stop being noticeable.

All seems reasonable to me :)

OK, OK. Just winding you up a bit! I shouldn't be so much of a mass-debater.

I don't really mind DRL's, can't really say I've ever been dazzled by them myself. Thanks for all the replies to this thread -interesting to hear peoples thoughts on it tho. Think they look quite good, especially on a white motor.... B)

will wait and see if I get flashed to 'turn the foglights off!' :giggle:

Haha, sorry I assumed it was a genuine question!

There is a secret switch in the fuse-box below the main lights switch. The box cover pulls off and you will see a small black rocker switch. This is the one you need. Dont press the red chequered button as I have been told this allegedly raises the engine output to 800hp for 27secs.

At the moment BMW seem to be the only Manufacturer who has tail lights on with DRLs, plus Volvo who still use the Scandinavian system.

I was under the impression that it was optional whether tail lights came on or not and indeed there has been plenty discussion about it on this Forum. However, the referenced document which is dated Nov 2010, so very recent seems to state that tail lights with DRLs will be allowed for a while then outlawed.

I can see more and more people driving in fog or twilight with just DRL, so no illumination at the rear. Vauxhall are clever, DRLs work only with light switch at auto, if you turn light switch to off, then turn ignition off, light switch jumps to auto. Not sure how many others do it that way.

Stewart.

Volvo currently have both normal DRL and the Scandanavian system on their cars for the driver to select as reqd. If you turn the lights to the off position they work as normal DRL's with no rear lights... If you leave the lights in the dipbeam on position they work in the Scandanavian way with tail lights lit also. (Currently using my folks 59 plate V70 which has this setup). Only let down for me in the V70 is that the DRL's are just the dipbeam headlights lit at a normal output. :|

VW have rear lights on with DRL. Well my wifes 10 plate polo does.

I think the dealer has set your up in the Scandinavian mode as VW's shouldn't have the tail lights lit with DRL's unless programmed to do so. I've seen plenty of Polo, Golf and Passat cars with no rear lights lit and DRL's lit at the front.

Certain that Merc and Audi also have rear illumination with DRLs too.

My fear with this extra level of lighting is that normal folk will have even LESS idea about what lighting they should be showing for a particular situation, than they do at the moment! :dull:

Audi don't have rear lights lit with DRL's unless set to Scandanavian set up. (Just seen three this morning to confirm this).

Cheers

Is it possible and legal to have a VRS set up to Scandanavian set up if its a uk spec car?

If so what lights would the car use in Scandanavian set up?

I would imagine it would be the normal foglight position DRL's but your tail lights would also be lit.

I think DRL's are one of the best things to come in, especially now they have LED tech.

I usually drive in any conditions, including bright glorious sunshine with my dipped beam on! Rain, muggy day, bit of damp in the air.....I'll stick the front fogs on too!

I believe there's a huge misunderstanding in the UK about the use of lights.

Some people think that fog lights front and rear are the same.. they're not! And that lights should only be put on when it's pitch black!

I think that people in Fabia VRS's are gonna get a tough time for a while, people will flash you, probably by people who've watched another poorly narrated Police Camera Action where a mkII Astra GTE got stopped in the late '90's for having its front fogs on and feel they have to let you know the law.

Seriously though, nobody should bother about any lighting on another vehicle as long as it's the right colour, not a main beam/full power DRL in your face at night or a rear fog light.

Many VW's have options to select Scandinavian or US DRL's using VCDS. US uses the front lights only, Scandinavian uses the rears as well.

My 2010 Passat uses the headlights on 85% power for DRLs, the 2011 facelift version has LED's in the headlight.
