just got off the phone from skoda oxford and they said they would do the lot for 400 including the pump

I had a quote from my local dealer a few weeks ago and it was 350. At that price I would get it done at an independent garage - I had a quote for 300.

i am going to browns motorsport who said they can do it a bit cheaper

I have just called 4 skoda dealers to check when my cambelt needs changing on my fabia vrs. all 4 said its 80,000 miles or four years. But, i have read on here that most people get it done at 60k? what is the reason behind this and what would happen if my cambelt was to go befor the 80k skoda have been telling me?

Technically up 07/2003 it is 60k / 4 year interval and from 08/2003 onwards it's 75k / 4 years

there is also that wonderful disclaimer of the previous use and service history must always be taken into account

basically it's a guide, manufacturers rarely pay for a new engine if the belt snaps just before the end of the interval, well at least Ford don't!

if you rag it all the time then change it a bit earlier

Think it is around 35 quid but they also will charge you for replacement VAG G12 coolant which is expensive - told me it was "special" to VAG cars.

It's called G12 plus plus

it's a lifetime fill coolant so i would agree that it is special

£48 from a factors, or about £55 from Skoda.

Skoda pumps are £41.89 inc VAT for the VRS

Damn, that's loads cheaper than what I paid. Think I paid around £350 from awesome.

I paid £350inc for cambelt and water pump at my local Skoda dealers (haggled down a bit from their original quote). £199inc + pump seems a fantastic price if anyone can get it!

Know it is Four years and UNDERSTOOD IT TO BE 40k miles, the dealer said 60k miles then re read it and said 60k Kilometers

As the car is a 2007 vrs se needed done anyway, and as I am about to retire, will not manage 40k before the next four years anyway :-)

Pump isn't essential (in fact it's not listed in the Skoda maintenance for cambelt job) Parts are £107 retail for belt and tensioner and guide pulley. I would do water pump at second belt change, but not the 1st, waste of money IMHO.

Wasn't there a pump problem with early vRS's? The plastic impeller was sheering off.

Because G12 plus plus only came out a year or two ago so you won't have the lifetime fill coolant in there, you have the old G12 or G12 plus coolant which is 5 year max interval.

I thought a metal impeller pump wasn't a VAG component? The OEM water pump has a plastic impeller which has been redesigned and doesn't snap blades anymore. How can you tell if you have a redesigned pump? I would personally rather be safe than sorry later.

My expansion tank has orange coolant in it, take it this will be G12+ as the car was manufactured Dec 2006?

Orange sounds a bit odd

Change it out for the G12 plus plus, it's due for a change anyway

G12 plus plus is a lovely lilac colour in case your were wondering

All timing belts have a time limit on them after install

Skoda/VW used to be 5 years now it's 4

I can only think it was a bit of a marketing thing as to not state it in the manual, and on the flip side a bit of a money earner now they have changed it to 4 across the entire range. Extend the interval at your own risk.

In our experience it's the 1.4 16v engines that are the trouble makers, they are the only engines we have seen problems with because the plastic part of the tensioner fails.

I have read on the honest john website, it was a "gift" to the UK VAG dealers when variable service interval was introduced as they would be losing servicing business.
