Starting problem for Octy 1.9TDI Ambiente

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

New guy here. Hope you can help with this teaser.

Have driven above car for 6 years with just usual services twice a year. The starter is turning the engine however it does not want to fire and will make a loud whirring noise when it fails. Seems like it is not getting diesel some way or another. This is an intermittent fault as it starts at some stage when left for a few minutes. It happens on uphill lies, straights and downhill so I am thinking it's not fuel back flow? Constant ignition turning just runs the battery down. No warning lights on dash and diagnostics check revealed no error codes. Any help? it's not reliable at the moment.

Hi and welcome aboard.

Welcome to Briskoda,

Not sure on your query but sure someone will be able to help

Query moved to the Octavia I forum. And welcome from me too. :)

a weak battery can not spin the starter motor fast enough to get the car started. whirring noise could be the starter failing to engage properly.

edit - poor spelling!

If there's a suspicion of a weak battery, check the voltage across the terminals before trying to start the car. It should show 12v or a little over (this isn't a guarantee of charge density, but if the voltage is down at 10.5 or so, we know you've got a failed cell, and a new battery should cure the problem).

i have just cured the same problem as you have and was a blocked cat changed it and away we go

For a minute I thought I was back at school and missed the turn off for the Skoda garage!

Thanks for the response.

Will test it ASAP.

Thanks,

Not being technically minded, nor do I profess to know anything about car mechanics, but is this a costly/lengthy process?

As long as I can spell it then it must be ok!

Regards.
