Dunlop SP Sport Maxx

Featured Replies

Haven't heard much talk about the tyres that come with the new vRS. I've clocked up 7k miles in mine now and although front and rears still got plenty of tread, was just wondering what people thought of them. They don't seem to get favourable reviews in most tyre sites and I've been eyeing up a pair of Uniroyal Rainsport 2's for a while now.

Thing is, the Dunlop's have done the job really well so far for me. Plenty of grip, look quite good with BSW and kept the tread quite well. Not much road noise either and the only time they let me down was in the snow (hardly surprising). I can afford Conti 3's or the Uniroyals but just wondering if there really that bigger difference than the Sport Maxx's.

Has anyone done more than 10k and noticed how the tyres have gone? Anyone changed tyre yet? Comments and advice appreciated.

I have the GT version of these tyres on my A4 and although I put my winters on last year, they have done about 13K or so without any problems. They look like they might make it all the way to about 25k+ miles too and that is dragging about nearly 2 tons of car. I guess the permanent 4x4 will save a little wear on the fronts, but overall they seem a good tyre. I might change though, but only because they seem a little noisy on the motorway. They seem excellant in the dry and pretty good in the wet :)

Mine lasted 7000 miles on my Octy....Rainsport 2' s in the spring

I have Dunlop Fast Response and they are the best tyres I've had pound for pound. I had Dunlop sport 01's before which I changed at 17k miles (haf the time on front /back) with about 3mm of tread left. As quite as continental prem contact 2's. look like they have a wider tread than the same sized tyres.

195 wide in these look as much as 205 wide in terms of road contact

You ought to get a much better deal on the Uniroyal's compared to Dunlops or Conti's, I certainly got a couple of good quotes.

I was looking at the reviews before I ordered my new car ( just swapped tyres front to back to keep all legal + 1mm until new car arrives).

The Uniroyals reported to have good handling and the tread pattern ought to be better in snow and slush but some reported faster wear which would fit with a softer grippier compound.

I also thought about Barum Bravuris 2 ( good test results and Barum are owned by Continental ) and Khumo KH31 or KU31 (can't remember which) but do either of these come in the lower profile I guess you need?

I didn't know Uniroyal was in the Continental group too - in Europe anyway.

Who owns which tyre brands

Maybe misguided but I would have far more confidence in a tyre from a less well known brand owned by one of the main groups than one that is purely third world.

Many years ago I bought Goodyears thinking I was supporting British Industry only to find they had been made in Turkey.

The dunlops were crap on the Octavia vRS,and ill be swapping for new premium rubber within the first few months. have a look at the thread i started a while back reference alternative tyre sizes to allow you a wider choice of tyre brands

Yeh the wear on the Uniroyals is supposed to be the only downside. I don't mind that too much as long as they provide what many reviews claim  Wet performance is what makes them stand out. Shame really because we don't usually get rain in the summer or spring time in England.....[sarcasm /off]. :D

Conti 3's work out at anywhere between £30-£40 more a corner and even though there the best, reviews haven't convinced me to part with an extra £120+

Resurrecting an old thread regarding these tyres.

15k in them now, and they seem to be getting worse. Tyres seem to spin easier from a standing start and the ESP light has been on more recently than usual. To make matters worse this has been during hot and dry spells so I can't even blame the conditions.

Anyone done quite a few miles on the Dunlops and noticed anything?

I need to think about new fronts soon - Dunlop SP Sport Maxx all round at the moment, and to be honest I've found them ok (I was very wary due to the Dunlop SP2000s I had on my Lupo - ok in the dry but had absolutely no confidence in them on wet / greasy surfaces).

I had Rainsports all round on my MKI vRS - very impressed so leaning towards them for the MKII as well - only thing is I'm quite obsessive :giggle: and prefer to have all four tyres the same - no point in replacing the rears at the moment as they're good for thousands yet.

Rainsports are also a good deal cheaper than the Dunlops.

There's no difference in road noise, ride comfort or grip on the Rainsports although strangely, the ESP lights comes on quite a bit. Putting that down to the remap though :D

In the wet they feel good. I think it's just a placebo really as the Dunlop's were fine in the wet (even on track!). So go figure :|

I think they are terrible.

Done a hard brake from 70 to avoid a collision and the front right tyre popped. Had less than 1k on it. Slides around in the rain and completely rubbish on "frost" let alone snow.

You had a blow out on a tyre with less than 1000 miles on it?

It was 957 miles exactly.

Skoda wouldn't cover it over warranty which sucked. I mean I know tyres are technically consumable parts but Jeezo. High performance tyres are suppose to, erm, handle high performance situations.. Which braking hard is.

They had the cheek to ask for £150 for a new one too. Get Tae!

I'd have been chasing dunlop rather than skoda as thats got to be a manufacturing defect and its saftey related.

Also I take it you checked your tyre pressures regularly.

I was going to, but it wasn't worth my hassle. I seriously doubt dunlop would of done much and blamed it on me some how.

Got a Toyo Proxie 4 on it now, although I shifted it to the right rear so I have the same tread where the power goes.

Edit:

I check them every second week when I wash the car.

I'd have been worried about the rest of the dunlops on the car possibly being from a deffective batch.

They take a while to warm up but they are quite a hard rubber so don't wear too quickly. Mine clung on for 16,000 miles and 2 track sessions. ;)

The Dunlop Sprot Maxx are Utter Rubish.

When buying tyres for a performance car cost really shouldn't come in to it. It's the only thing that keeps you on the road

If you order online Kwik Fit have Rain Max (are these the replacements for Rain Sports?) for a ton a corner.

I only hope the supply isn't as erratic in 205 40 17W as it is in 205 45 16W (MKI vRS tyre size).

I'm probably going to go down the Toyo route when the others need replaced. Perhaps Prada's

I've found the Sport Maxx to be alright actually, gave ok grip when I did the 1/4 mile in them, now they have 7k miles on them I'm not sure how they will fare though.

Definitely will get them changed if they struggle at the first Pod session I get down to.

National are doing Sport Maxx at £125 per corner (online) - that's cheaper than E-Tyres (refuse to use them in any event as that smug, irritating git Eamonn Holmes pops up on their website).

I'm not the most enthusiastic driver, so tempted just to stick with Sport Maxx.

 classic
