Any remapped PD Scout experiance?

Featured Replies

So it getting close to the end of my warrenty on my Scout and as I intend to keep it for some time and with fuel prices rising, I am cosidering a remap. So my intial questions are:

1) Has anyone else had a remap on a Scout PD engine and if so what are their experiances?

2) Will I experiance a loss of that wonderful low and torque and if so how will this effect it off road- in particular steep hill climbs and decents?

3) Will it reduce towing performance- I only tow a small trailer so no major issue here?

4) Will it improve fuel economy and if so what are peoples experiance of this?

5) Are there any longer terms effects I should consider in terms of wear on the engine or components?

6) Given the harsh winters of the last 2 years has anyone experianced problems with remaps and performance at low temperatures?

7) Performance as in extra horses is not a major deal, but would be interested to hear what I might expect?

Any comments, thoughts, experinance appreciated.

Cheers

James

Is your basis for considering a remap based purely on a requirement for additional fuel economy?

If so I'm not sure a remap is the best way...

Check out Eco maps.

Interesting reading.

What is the trade off, how can you have improved MPG AND increased torque / acceleration?

It does make me wonder if these eco maps are as good as they claim then why doesn't Skoda just program their cars this way in the factory?

A remap is a great idea. I had my Snow Monster at 1 month old remapped by Ben at Shark Performance.

I have a CR engine, but the PD engine is also great for remapping.

You will get improved fuel economy, based on my experience, improved low, mid and top end torque as well as more power. I will find out tomorrow how much, but I'm expecting in the region of 140bhp -> 180 ish bhp, & torque from 320Nm -> 440Nm.

I have a DSG gearbox, and now that the gearbox has learned the new power & torque available, moves up to higher gears at lower rpm = better economy.

Obviously using the power will lead to higher fuel economy, but so far, even when using it the extra power, it still is no worse than before.

As you have a PD engine you might be able to use Ben's STS system, where you can do it yourself. Look Shark Performance up on the sponsors section of this site.

I have not found one bad report on Shark. Ben is the man to speak to, gives advice freely, & if you chose to use him....it will be worth it. I insure my Snow Monster with Skoda and they charged me an extra 10% on my premium. I said, which is what I use it for, that it is for economy.

I had a BMW 530d e39 touring a while back and had an 'eco' remap. it lasted about a month until I was back in the area to have a proper remap -stage 1 I believe they call them. The eco was worse than standard. The stage 1 was awesome. Improved fuel economy and power and torque.

Hope this helps.

Mike

"Eco" maps are a load of rubbish. A properly tuned map can give you good performance and an increase in economy.

took our scout to Ben at shark performance last week to have it tinkered with

what a diffference

Its not just about the extra power (140bhp to 180) it makes the whole car smoother and more responsive, especially in 2nd,3rd and 4th. this makes for safer overtaking. Its reassuring to have the extra power there to use if needed

Not noticed any increase in economy yet but i'm still having fun playing :giggle: once the novelty wears off, if it ever will?, and i start driving it 'normally' im sure there will be a slight increase in economy.

I also spend 10hrs a day at work in a standard scout, as a response driver, and the difference is like chalk and cheese, although we do carry a lot of kit in the back!!!!!

also with the 4WD system it puts the power straight down if needed and no wheel spin

and Ben is a decent honest bloke whos keen to offer advice so if need be give him a call

Ben@Shark +1

Having had my PD140 remapped by Ben just before Christmas, the additional power and torque is impressive.

You will have more torque lower down the range, as well as a smoother power delivery.

At first, my fuel economy dropped, but I have since put this down to the extreme cold and my heavy right foot!

I have just done 550 miles since Wednesday, trip computer showing an average of 57.1mpg, and I am just down to 1/4 of a tank, so I reckon best part of 120 miles left in the tank! Edit - I have just entered all of the numbers in fuelly, and my last tank was an average of 56.3mpg according to fuelly, trip computer indicated 57.1mpg so was fairly accurate.

My previous best on a tank was 620 miles, so I have seen an improvement. It has taken a month for the ECU to adapt to the map though, probably due to the extreme temperatures around Christmas.

Thanks all, interesting reading and seems to be a good idea. No doubt once I have persuaded the better half a trip to see Ben is on the cards. Still intersted to know if there are any long term effects if anyone has experianced them. There must be a down side somewhere?

Yeh your clutch will suffer, i;ve had my Caddy remapped for over two years done 35k (bought it at 36k) and the clutch is starting to slip saying that it was meant to be 104hp standard its now 160 :giggle: there has to be a trade off somewere.

So at 70K your clutch is starting to slip?

I would say that depending on driving style, 70K isn't unreasonable for a clutch to start showing signs of wear.

Having said that, I have had 120K out of clutches before .......

To be fare mate it does car a little weight (generator, water tank with water up to 250litres, two boxes with towels and cleaning products, hoover's, associated tat lol) suppose 70k isnt too bad.

Yep - a fair bit of weight then!

I suppose 70K is less than what modern clutches normally do, I would expect a ballpark 100K nowadays on most.

But, remapped with some weight in it is bound to wear a little quicker :giggle: , just like the front tyres!

  • 1 year later...

Jim,

Did you ever go through with it?

My Scout is now 5 years old (I've had it for four) and on 104k miles. We will be keeping it in the family till it dies and am musing about a remap to 'renew' it's abilities and stop any needless 'car change for changes sake' feelings that may otherwise develop over the coming years! I'm all the more interested now the Scottish Shark Dealer is only 20 mins from home. But like you have concerns over long term wear and cold weather performance.

Anyone know if the mileage is an issue for a remap? (Still drives like Day 1 to my mind, just with increasing economy as the miles have gone on)

Niall
