On a long journey I get ~34 (according to the computer). Going to work anywhere between 29 - 33 (depends on the right foot). I've done around 2500 miles now so expect the engine to still be a bit tight. From what sort of mileage have 1.8 owners found things improve?

I'd say it was after my first oil change BUT I also had the stage one map done just after the service so this will have a bearing on mpg figures.

Some people like Graham need to read the thread title better. Simplistic suggestions like "drive slower" aren't helpful on a thread like this.

Firstly, it's about a 1.8Tsi - not a 140bhp Diesel, so I don't care if you're getting 80mpg because it isn't the car described in the thread. Boasting about your MPG isn't constructive or relevant to this thread.

Secondly, as I said, it's also diabolical around town - not just if I'm speeding. Only one sensible poster has highlighted that it is likely to be an engine issue and in fact, you might be interested to know that even the dealer suggested an engine remap to improve it. Does anyone else know of another car where within a month of buying it, the dealer suggests getting it tuned to make it work properly?

I know that the aeros are bad with it, and therefore MPG will fall, but the urban and combined MPG is awful as well, and that isn't driving aggressively - quite the opposite - I couldn't drive more carefully and efficiently if I tried.

If you're saying you drive 300 miles up a motorway at 50mph to get 48mpg, then good on you, but I drive at 70 and shake my fist at middle lane crawlers like your lot!

You are the person who said you were driving at 85 in your Yeti, so my comment of slowing down is perfectly correct. I also note I'm not the only person to have said it.

I suggest you need to go on an advanced or defensive driving course if you feel the need to shake your fist at anyone doing less speed than you. It could and would be construed as threatening or aggressive behaviour.

Do I get the impression by this thread and by others you have posted in your short time here, that actually you have realised that you've bought the wrong car, and are now trying to justify that to yourself, because you can't actually admit it?
