Staging and Needle Sweeping?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have been looking at the Diagnosis and VCDS side of the site, but I came back with some questions.

I am thinking about having several things done to mine:

1) Coming Home/ Leaving Home Light

2) Cornering Fog

3) Needle Sweep or Staging

4) Auto Door Lock above 10 mph

I am wondering whether Needle Sweep will reduce the life of the mechanism in the dash?

I don' think this is possible, but could Hillhold be acticated via VCDS? I am under the impression it needs hardware?

Thanks.

  • Could you perhaps explain what "staging" and "needle sweep" is, because to me the first is something you do to produce something at a theatre, and needle sweep is looking for sharps on junkies, etc?

Hillhold needs hardware,

The needle sweep should be fine, the superb does this as standard and so do several other VW/Audi models.

Just need to find someone with VCDS to activate needle sweep, looks good.

Jjust seems strange why this isn't activated from factory.

+1 from this old fart too!

Me? I just drive my Yeti... ... But I like to keep up to date with things. And Graham is so much more polite. I'd have said WTF is this all about, eh?

So a full, clear, lucid explanation in easily understood words, with a list of benefits too, please. No jargon!!!

1st edit:

And I've been to YouTube and watched the vids there and can see the 'needle

sweep'. My question is - "So?" what's it achieving?

2nd edit:

Ah - just seen that the OP has a 1.2 S spec trim, where the leaving/returning lights are not standard, nor cornering fog lights. And, says he eating humble pie, I understand why you'd want them. The cornering fogs are really useful, and I also appreciate the auto- self lock. Yep - I hope you can get what you want. Sorry if it came across as a bit, er, snotty before!

Still don't understand "staging" though?

I think 'needle sweep' refers to a full scale deflection of the instruments on switching on the ignition.

Not sure about staging.

here's some info on cornering light and staging:

My link

1) can be set in Maxi-Dot

2) see my info

3) see info

4 can be done in Maxi-Dot

Seema a rather pointless operation. Perhaps it is to clear any spiders from the instrument face.

Thanks, the_Raz, will bring instructions with me.

Quite like the idea of displaying the cruise control set figure on the Maxidot and the calibration of the range/fuel consumption.

I used the cruise control for the first time this last weekend on a trip up the motorway to Scotland and quite liked it. I think that I might of caused some confusion to other road users by indicating left and right on initially switching it on. I should have read the manual, but being a man and all that, used the process of elimination :giggle:

Hahaha... Snap. Last time I took my Yeti in I asked James to do nearly these exact things! Alas a standard Škoda dealer VCDS is not allowed to do these changes.

I want to change the comming home/leaving home lights from the Xenons to the fogs (saves the expensive Xenons), have the needle staging and change the car's country to Australia to have the big MPH display in the Maxidot.

Now to find a VCDS!

From my notes:

Fogs for coming home instead of Xenons:

Go to central electrics 09, the long coding and look for " Xenon xutter without highbeam" may not be exact words ( 908/912), tick the box, exit and do it! See this thread.

Needle sweep:

In the adaption menu of the instruments there is a menu called "Staging" and on mine it was "not active" I changed this to "active" then got a message saying it had been accepted. See this thread.

And MPH in big numbers in centre:

I just recoded the country selection in #17 Instruments with VCDS (10.6.1) and its now selectable in the Maxidot menu as "Alt. Speed Dis." It now puts the external temp display where the KM/h used to be. Set country to Australia. See this thread.

A small comment on the fuel consumption calibration: I ended up using either 101 or 102% (can't remember exatcly) so the maxi-dot is quite accurate even to start with. My five or so test always gave a figure that was between these two, and I never got around to try if the setting can bet set on decimals as well. Anyway the car's displayed consumption matches very well to the calculated one.

And I know the needle sweep doesn't provide any real use, but it looks nice!

Please can someone explain what 'needle sweeping' is designed to achieve??

aas far as I can see, it just tries to make the instrumentation look daft and naff.

Llanigraham and I are still none the wiser.

It is the same as people wanting a Tangerine Orange Yeti, or like Sunflowers in their garden, or paint their house blue instead of cream: It looks nice. Nothing more to it than that I'm afriad. Personal taste! emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

It's just another startup test of the electronics to show that everything is working ok, similar to all the warning lights being illuminated.

By gum thats exciting!!! :p

Reminds me of when the speedo on my Lancia Dedra broke as I was looking at it on the A1 and I was 3 weeks waiting for a repair! What a car!

If it fails to needle sweep does it mean yer speedo/rev counter is bust, it has re-set itself to normal or yer speedo cable has detached itself from yer speedometer? :giggle:

Like some others, I thought I had accidentally signed on to a sewing forum when I first read the OP. What are these strange things I wondered? emoticon-0124-worried.gif

However, all becomes clear, eventually - and changing the coming home function to fogs instead of Xenons, a la Johann's post, seems most sensible to me. Seems weird a dealer isn't allowed to do it. Must be a crazy European thing - like when Jim Hacker had to stop the EU from reclassifying the British sausage as 'emulsified, high-fat, offal tube'.

I do wish that 'faceless powers that be' would realise that when I spend tens of thousands of pounds to purchase something, it becomes mine, and I expect to be able to do whatever I like to it, or get someone else to if I please. sigh.

What you will find is that the dealer diagnostics is not actually as powerful or all encompassing as VCDS, in short they probably can't do it, because with the dealer equipment it's not possible, whereas with VCDS it is possible.

Ah - thanks - it was the 'dealer is not allowed' bit that woke up my grumps. Sounds like a business opportunity, then, and I suppose there are folks will do it for shekels? That is ssuming these things do not compromise warranty (ie the sods still have us pinned down...)

Yes, anybody on the forum who has VCDS - look in that section for a member near you....

Mike
