Noise from rear while locking steering

Featured Replies

Hi,

Hope someone might have come across this before.

My rear breaks became progressivly more noisy when applied. Had my local mechanic look at them. He replaced the break shoes. Last night after collecting the car I drove the car home (approx 7 miles). When home I needed to reverse into a parking space, when I locked the steering fully to the left, I heard a groaning noise from the rear, which appear to be on the left hand side. Having observed this I did some testing and found that the noise only occours if I lock the steering fully right or left with my foot on the break peddle. It doesnt occour with the hand break only applied or if I lift my foot off the break peddle while turning the steering wheel. The noise is best described as a groan and last about 3 seconds. It was definitly not there before the trip to the mechanic.

I left the car over night and have retested it today after driving to work (10 miles), noise is still there but not a noticable and now only happens the firsttime I lock the wheel but comeback if I drive forward a few feet and repeat the turning motion. Could be my imagination but when locking the steeering the rear rleft of the car appears to rise up.

Rang the mechanic he says all he did was replace the shoes.

Anyone have any solution for this? My partner is doing the driving test in 2 weeks so dont want the car groaring while locking steering during the 3 point turn :)

It sounds like the shoe is vibrating against the drum - Don't see why it only does it when you are turning though.. ?

thank you for the advice

update: brough vehicle back to garage and had it checked out. Drove it for about 100miles now, noise when locking steering has gone. Have noticed though that when starting each morning, that the breaks squeel when first applied but not al all after this, possibly might be associated with being parked on a slight hill over night.

The first application of brakes is likely to just be wearing off some surface rust from the inside of the drums (rear) / surfaces of the disks (front).
