Painting The Neptunes

Featured Replies

Hi folks

I've decided to get the vRS Neptune alloys painted. Currently have a candy white hatchback and thinking either anthracite or gloss back.

Being honest I'm swaying more towards gloss black.

Car has only done 2000 miles so the wheels are like new and don't need any additional touch up etc.

Anyone recommend a good place to go in the Manchestet area. And approximate costs?

Cheers

Paint or powder coat?

Mine are painted - its a less durable finish but normally cheaper to do. Powdercoat is normally more durable but can cost more.

Having said that mine has 30,000 hard driven miles on it so far and there are no chips or marks of anysort on the wheels.. I also cut costs a little in that I had the bodyshop only paint the front of the wheel - no point painting the inside as far as i'm concerned as its always covered in a layer of road crud so you wouldn't be able to see it anyway. If you're a "detail" muppet and you take your wheels off to clean them then this won't be a good solution for you. Mine cost 188 quid incl the vat however this was at 15% vat.- and I'm guessing you won't want to drive to Reading to have them done..

Mine ended up darker than I'd hoped, but i still think they look great - its a dark anthracite colour and not as dark as a full black - it sits very nicely with the other "black" stuff on the car ie the wipers, mirror bases, grille, roof rails etc.

If i was doing it again I'd get the OE paint code for the wheels on a 430 scuderia and give that to the bodyshop - these are the perfect wheel colour IMO.

HTH

Ok, so they're not Neptunes and its not a FL, but you get the idea.............

check out sworral's (stu) pics - he has a candy white with a lighter colour wheel compared to mine - just tried to search but i couldn't find the thread..

I've just had a quote (today) from a place up in Scotland to powder coat 4 18" alloys on a same-day-turnaround service (basically drop the car off in the morning and collect it again at 5pm with the wheels all coated, tyres fitted, re-balanced etc) for £285.

Obviously not ideal location-wise but it gives you an idea of what to expect cost-wise.

I agree with Rob.e - sworral's wheels are a pretty good colour.

I draw your attention to post #2!

And I take offence to the term 'Detailing Muppet' as I regularly remove my wheels to clean them! Well anunually anyway. :giggle:

Erm, cough, at least Rob can't be accused of hypocrisy....

thanks for putting in the links chaps. Ill post the pics here too so its easier to search in future.

Smart repair company are really good Ed, in Chester if its not too far and on the internet link below.

After seeing how good rob_e's wheels looked when he had them done i decided to get mine done too. Would have loved to have got them done before I picked up the car but its another area that Skoda are missing out one apart from with the Fabia VRS. Come on Skoda, get yourselves into gear and offer different coloured wheels as an option!

I decided to go with a local firm who have loads of good reviews on the net and on a few other forums plus after meeting the owner Chris I could tell he really cares for doing a good job. Their website is here smart repair company - chester and the wheels cost £246 to get done which included the removal and fitting of the tyres. (No affiliation to the company by the way, just a happy customer)

The process they use is to;

remove tyres

chemically strip the wheels (shot blast can be too severe apparently)

powder coated primer

Spray paint the colour (anthracite)

baked on laquer

This is a before a few weeks ago

This is the new coat and with all the rain I havent been able to get any shots yet with it clean! Probably marmite to a lot of people but I really like dark wheels on white cars, silver just doesnt cut it for me.

Whilst it was in Chris also had some good ideas on some vinyl stickers which Ive only had chance to apply to one wheel at the moment. They are done in graphite so not too obvious and you can only notice them when up close

Cheers for the pictures chaps. Some of those motors looks damn fine!

Just the dilemma of final colour which is bugging me.

That place in Chester was the one I was trying to remember. Cheers for the heads up. I might give them a call.

The only issue is having no car or getting home whilst they paint them up.

Edd I know a lad in Irlam he did the wheels on my White ST I'll put some pictures on later on.

Tim - good to have recommendations for decent places in the area. Can you post up some more details?

FWIW, I had mine refurbed by an old friend of mine who runs a refurb business, but he's near Coventry! I'd also consider The Wheel Specialist, especially with one of their frequent discount codes. I know several who've used their Manchester branch and would recommend them.

Cheers,

Steve

P.S. 'muppets' Rob? Careful, you'll get outnumbered at this rate! :p

This question is mainly aimed at Stu, although others who have had their wheels painted/powder-coated may be able to answer:

What do you do about the outward-facing surface of the wheel nuts?

I see on the pics of Stu's wheels (above) that they appear to be the same colour as the wheels

I'm sure the painters would do the bolts at the same time, not how long the finish would last though.
