Tpm Tyre Pressure Monitor ?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am in final stages of deciding which optional extra to include on my Order for a 1.8 TSi Yeti Elegance.

I have noticed quite a few Forum members appear to have TPM fitted and would welcome any opinions regarding value for money ( £100)

How does it work ? Is each tyre valve replaced with some sort of transducer which transmits RF data to Maxi-dot display or is there

something fixed into the wheel rim ?. The brochure gives no details at all as to how it operates and I am curious.

Any user comments would be very welcome .

Thanks John

It uses the ABS sensors to detect the speed at which the wheels rotate. If a tyre deflates it rotates faster and the TPM light comes on in the dash. It won't tell you which wheel to check. It is thus a very simple system but worth having as the rubber on your wheels is all that keeps you on the straight and narrow!

and it is one of the cheapest options....

I have this on my Octavia, and unless you are the kind of guy who checks your tyre pressures every week, I'd say it is invaluable. In my case, it detected a slow puncture before I was able to fel the car pulling to the side. And if you don't have a spare wheel I reckon it should be fitted as standard!!

And wih the simple (and cheap) addition of those replacement dust caps with a little indicator that shows you if a tyre has lost pressure, then you have (a) an effective early warning system on your dash display and (B) an indicator of which tyre has the problem when you get out to look.

Something like these?

I've never used this sort of thing. What should one look out for when buying? I see some cost up to £20. What do you get for that vs these £4,99/pair ones? Which ones do you use?

I used to have a set of similar to these in plastic ( approx £10 for 4 I think) . They were absolutely hopeless !!.

They might have shown the difference between 100 psi and 0 psi but that's about all !.

Maybe these on Ebay are better ?

I paid about £10 for a set of 4 through an offer in a daily newspaper a couple of years ago. they seem quite reasonable - mine clearly show a decrease from 38psi to 36psi for example. Can't tell you any more details I'm afraid as the packaging disappeared a long time ago!

I got it fitted to our Yeti for free, I've had the same system on previous Skodas and it has always been very good at detecting slow punctures, one was a really slow'un caused by a nail.

Its a little crude compared to the transducer based systems but the simplicity means better reliability. I would tick the box personally.

I do lots of motorway driving and those few extra seconds could make the difference between pulling over safely and kissing the Armco. As they say - a 'no brainer'

Are you going for a 4x4 version? If you are, do include the "Off-Road" option. You may never actually venture into the mud but, for me, the last two winters proved what a clever piece of kit this is. I also have the "hill start" option and this works well.

You may know the hill from the Lifeboat House to Cadwaladers in Criccieth. We watched a van start up this hill and then slide back down again on the packed ice. It was very graceful to behold. The Yeti drove the hill with no problem and we reached the top without incident - this was on the tyres that came with the car.

In my opinion TPM is a nice to have option but please consider the importance of your choice before ordering. I just kick my tyres every morning!!:giggle: TPM does not check the tyre pressure - just any variation in rolling speed.

Hi Terfyn,

Yes I am going for the 4 x 4 with the Elegance equipment level. This includes the " Off Road " switch as standard.

Yes I know the hill you mention - it is pretty steep !. Actually after having seen the van slide all the way down before you

you must have felt a bit apprehensive setting off up in the Yeti !. Probably a very good feeling when you got to the Castle

with no problem !.

Cheers John
