Guess The Number Of Gears!

Featured Replies

I have recently ordered a Scout 2.0 Tdi DSG. There is confusion as to whether it should have 6 or 7 gears. The Skoda UK site doesn't even have the DSG listed when you go to the performance details page, and when I e-mailed Skoda UK even they had to check! I have been told it will have a 7 gear box, but I await the outcome with interest. Perhaps I could run a sweepstake!

With a combination of DSG and 4x4 I'd understood that the 6-spd box is used. That's certainly the case with the Superb II Combi, as my Dad was looking at them the other day.

Almost definately a 6 speed wet clutch, not to be confused with 7 speed dry clutch fitted in the new Fabia vRS, this type won't be able to cope with the amount of torque put out by the TDI.

EDIT: I spoke to my local stealer the other day about the Fabia and he was convinced the 7 speed was fitted across the Skoda range..........until I showed he the spec in an Octavia brochure, he also didn't have a clue about the wet/dry clutch!?!

7 speed seems to be only fitted to lower petrol and 1.6tdi models, 6 speed on 2.0tdi diesel and higher performance petrol, as said the 7 speed dry clutch version has a torque limit, above this and you have the 6 speed.

got to drive one of our engineers new car today, elegance 2.0tdi 140 cr with the dsg, wow blown away.

Not quite. The 7-spd is fitted to the 1.8TSI 160. Whether you consider that higher performance or not is another matter entirely ;)

Exactly, the 7 speed dry clutch box has a torque limit of 250 nM (184 lb/ft) the torque output of the 1.8 TSI. Any engine producing more torque than this will have to have the 6 speed wet clutch box i.e. the 1.9 and 2.0 diesel models

defo 6 speed I dont think even the audi's have got 7 speeds in the diesel's yet (baring the 1.6tdi??), most certainly not in the quattro models

Yep - the 1.8TSI isn't high performance in the amount of torque it can produce then

A bit annoying for those with an eye on a remap for their 1.8TSI DSG though. But then whether the 250Nm limit is actually a real limit at all is another discussion entirely...

So why is it then that you can specify a VW Tiguan TDI 140hp (with 320 Lbs.ft/Nm of torque) with a 7 speed DSG unit?

Or is this a different DSG than the Å koda 7-speed one?

Good question, perhaps its a new wet clutch variety or simply a different gear box to the Fabia vRS. :S

Audi have been bringing out 7sp wet DSG's with higher torque capacities, such as in the RS3 and even the new A7 3.0tdi, but whether they will be fitted to Skodas yet, I don't know. It would give them an advantage for emissions figures......

Interesting. I'd guess then that VW have earlier access to a new gearbox revision, perhaps originally designed by the Audi boffins.

Maybe that will appear on Skodas at a later date...

Yes the 7 speeder in the Tiguan is a newer wet clutch version that first saw service in the Transporter van.

7 speed dry clutch for Fabia vRS etc is the DQ200

6 speed wet clutch for Octavia diesel etc is the DQ250

7 speed wet clutch for VW Tiguan etc is the DQ500

so yes Johann it is a different DSG to the Skoda one, I wouldn't be surprised if it will be started to be fitted to Skodas at a later date, e.g. Octavia MK3

Aha! Thanks for that! That explains it nicely.
